Basic Friday

It's the end of the week and I have a lot of things to do. Of course, first I have to get this exercise business out of the way, so today it's just the basics: cardio, core & stretching, pull-ups, and only one set of the latter: I felt a twinge inside the right wrist forearm that reminded me of the time I had really bad carpal tunnel. Granted, that was back in the 80s when I hadn't yet replaced my mouse with a joint-friendly trackball and then I developed "mouse shoulder" and couldn't close my hand, so no turning doorknobs or even brushing my hair.

The gym is really quiet and all the treadmills are vacant. Fridays can be like that. And it's chilly enough outside that I actually wore a fleece hat in the drive over. While cardio was a bit of a struggle, pull-ups were easy until rep 20. Those last 3 always make me a tad worried and the last rep isn't even close to being smooth and confident. Everything else is standard and routine, and then I have to go...

Better The Next Day

It's a bit chilly this morning so I turn the heat on in the car before my son and I head to the school bus stop. Then, off to the gym. It's not very crowded as Thursday appears to be an "off day" and that's just fine with me. I do my cardio and it's moderately better than yesterday. I'm always better the next day, as if each workout is a primer for the one to come. Except for movements like pull-ups that target my tiny forearms and weak elbow joints. Those I'm better if I have a day or more to rest those tendons.

I barely notice crunches and dead bugs, so much so that I lose count and reprimand myself for not focusing. I'm texting with my sister who had planned to drive down to her Florida house in a few days. While Hurricane Ian didn't hit it directly, the storm was so big and wide that sitting there on the gulf side, the house has surely suffered damage and flooding. She's still planning to go with her SO, and they've booked a hotel in case they can't reach or reside in their own house, but Venice is also on the Gulf side so I doubt businesses there will be viable.

There's no one in the Aerobics Room and that's very pleasant, but a bit strange. There are a few people in the free weight area: regulars and newbies. There's no bar in the holder of the Inclined Breaker Bench closest to the squat rack, which is fine. It just means I'll be using DBs for the entire workout. Since I worry about numbness in my fingers, I'll just make sure the DBs are not over my face when doing Inclined Presses. All in all, a good workout although the 25s put a slight strain on right pectoral as I press up. So weird that it's not the left side as I'm stronger on the right although I'm not right-handed (cross dominant).

I've read a few more articles about muscle knots and I'm surprised that there's controversy as to what they really are. I can feel the hard painful lumps roll away when pressed, skittering along like marbles under the skin. There's no denying that pressure on these points cause a lot of radiating pain until suddenly the pain is gone and so is the lump. The issue is apparently muscle knot's relationship to myofascial trigger points, which some say don't actually exist. Ugh. Knots tend to reoccur in the same spot, perhaps due to damage or sensitivity. If I work out too much I get knotty. If I don't work out at all, I get knotty. It's a balancing act...

Completed Task

When the alarm sounded at 6 this morning, my immediate response was to hit the snooze for another 5 minutes. Of course, I got up after 3 and started the day. It was a mite chilly at 49F and I put the heat on in the car. It's the mid-week return to school after a long weekend due to Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) which closes schools for 2 days. The school bus came on time and I got to the gym with a few minutes to look at my phone.

I notice a shiny red sports car circling the spots closest to the gym until it decides to park at the end furthest from the storefronts. Then I realize it's M, a regular from the gym, who hangs with Lazy Pedals and Tank. It must be mid-life crisis time since the Mustang GT isn't a very practical car, especially for winters around here. I'll probably always be a Subie fan...

Pedaling was hard today. I had skipped yesterday to run a bunch of errands, including buying a cheese and cracker platter for the Scout Court of Honor last night. No one sells cheese and cracker platters anymore! I had to buy crackers, assorted sliced cheese, and assorted sliced Italian meats (salamis, pepperoni, etc) separately and figure out a way to set it up. Luckily, other parents brought food too.

Well, at least I did 35 minutes of cardio, and then got my two sets of pull-ups in to bookend the core and stretching in the Aerobics Room. Gym Owner is in there setting up for the Boot Camp class that will occur in an hour. He's reasonably quiet laying down equipment, which is very considerate. There's another woman at the other end of the room, stretching and doing hip thrusts with a barbell on her lap while she's draped over one of the step-up platforms. A few times a week, a fat middle-aged guy comes in to literally loudly drop a few plates, plastic DBs, or step bases on the floor, reserving spots for himself and his wife for whichever class is occurring at 9:30. Not sure if he's weak, careless, or just inconsiderate. Or maybe a combination thereof. Hasn't anyone ever told him not to slam/drop the weights? I guess not: he doesn't look like he works out much...

Today I had time to do 10 minutes on the stair climber. While I didn't set any personal records, I at least got my entire routine done. I haven't done that in a really long time... Let's see if I can make it here tomorrow!

Later, I stop in a store to buy milk for my son (his favorite meal is apparently breakfast cereal) and a gallon of water for the dog park. The fountain's been shut off so we have to bring water. And we appear to have a shortage. Every shelf is empty of gallon jugs of water although there are plenty of cases of smaller bottles. It isn't just that store either. Weird, right?

School Holiday Monday

I didn't get to the gym as early as I would've liked, but I still got there early enough to pedal on the elliptical of my choice. I'm not as focused or energetic as I'd like though. Yesterday I actually got a full 8 hours for the first time in months and I woke feeling like I had a sleep hangover. Too much sleep? Ugh.

I'm too late to use the Aerobics Room so I lay a mat down in a section in the Functional Gym area. There are two others there but no kids even though schools are closed for the Jewish New Year. Well, at least I get my pull-ups done for both the first and second sets.

There's no school tomorrow so I hope I get up in time to exercise before taking doggos to the park. I'm always less knotty when I do.

Exercise Cures It All

I haven't been to the gym in 3 days and my body is starting to rebel. Not the lower back or sciatic nerves, but the upper back and painful knots under my shoulder blades, probably from sitting at my desk all day working our BSA Troop's upcoming Court of Honor. Since I'm the Advancement Chair, I have to make sure all the data is entered into record-keeping software (as well as the BSA's own proprietary software), and coordinate the awards with "blue cards" and advancements with position patches. Plus print out progress reports for each individual Scout.

The badge cards have spaces too tiny to handwrite pertinent info so I print out labels on sticker paper and affix them to each individual card, along with the proof of completion (blue card) and the actual cloth Merit Badge (must be purchased at an authorized Scout shop). I've used my "knot killer doorknob roller" to press out the painful lumps only to have them re-emerge hours later. Too much desk work! When I exercise regularly, I don't have these issues!

Within ten minutes of pedaling the elliptical, I can feel two of the most prominent knots melt away under my shoulder blades. It's weird considering pedaling has nothing to do with the upper body. There's no stretching or pressing involved! I'm just holding the handrail with the flaky heart rate monitor sensors. I carry tension in my upper body, and I grind or clench my teeth as well. Exercise helps alleviate the stress behind these reflexive movements.

The Autumnal Equinox occurred last night and today definitely feels like Fall. Temps started out in the high 40s (good sleeping weather) and never got past 60F even in direct sun. It also means I barely break a sweat doing cardio. Pull-ups feel good until rep 20 and then it's a bit of a struggle to make it to 23. Core is core.

I have time so instead of a second set of pull-ups, I do triceps. And the Inclined Breaker Bench is far enough away that my feet don't bump into the spotter platform attached behind it. Yaaay! Between sets, SnowBird comes over and starts talking to me. I can't understand anything he's saying until I pull out an earbud. "Think you'll be here as long as me? I'm 83," he says smiling. "Is it your birthday?" I ask him. "Oh no. That was June. But I'm working on making it to 84." I give him the thumbs up and he smiles and walks away. I do all my sets, shower & change, and have enough time to buy some groceries before taking pups to the park. They love brisk weather. Cold temps make them extra frisky.

The Busy Weekend

I hadn't planned to do as much walking as I did yesterday, and I didn't even leave our neighborhood! I told my son I would accompany him up and down our road to solicit donations from our neighbors for his Eagle Scout project. Part of the project process requires a Scout to fund raise if the money spent on supplies and materials is over a set amount. It is admittedly our least favorite part of the project. But instead of going to stores along the commercial strip, or standing outside a shop with a table "groveling for money" as my son would put it, we carried flyers describing the project and personally spoke to the people who live around us.

Because the park is less than a quarter mile from our road, everyone knows it, which made explaining the project so much easier. Few people had cash available and my son was appreciative of those who could spare a few dollars. Most folks opted to take a flyer and scan the PayPal QR code to submit a donation. Wow, technology is great! This also gives us their email addresses so we can send them thank you cards when the project is completed.

I'm exhausted when I get up today. Imagine my surprise to see over 7,000 steps on the phone app. My ears might've gotten a little sunburned as well since it was a lovely, bright, sunny still-summer day. The gym feels crowded. It's the beginning of the week and Lazy Pedals is draped over elliptical #1 while Middle-Aged Guy pedals on #2. I look around and see that the LifeFitness Cross-Trainer is my best option, but this time I won't be doing any backward pedaling. I'm tired. I only do 25 minutes and then a set of pull-ups, doing less than the usual 23, because, well, I'm tired. But it's not the same tired as not having enough sleep, because oddly, that doesn't impact strength for me.

I do core and that feels okay. But I'm bailing on the 2nd set of pull-ups, especially since SnowBird is in the Stretch Cage when I emerge from the Aerobics Room. Instead, the step machine beckons and I spend 10 minutes climbing and singing to myself. Later, at the park, I sing along to Bon Jovi's rendition of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. (I've embedded the video below.) It's just me and the dogs so I'm not concerned about my lack of singing prowess. One of the dogs ignores me, but the other one sits close and stares at my mouth, wondering at the strange noise.

I have an eye doc appointment in the afternoon. Pressures are holding steady, not great but not awful at 14/15. The Visual Field test is more interesting with the right eye maintaining the same vision loss in a crescent up top, and the left eye showing actual improvement?! I've had worse tests for the left eye, maybe those were just bad days? But I also remark that I feel as if I was seeing more lights flash, which is so much better than not seeing lights that are supposed to be there. Maybe sleeping on that wedge pillow really is helping? Not with my IOPs but with the more important actual vision...

And On the Fifth Day

I'm so tired that I thought about skipping the gym today. But I didn't. Instead, my concession to fatigue was to cut my cardio by 10 minutes and skip a set of pull-ups. My shoulder is less sore today but I've just noticed that it is slightly swollen with faint reddish patches. Maybe a vague rash? These are all common side effects and I'm not worried. I am tired though from the late night out seeing "Mr Burns, A Post-Electric Play" because I didn't get home until nearly 11 pm and then I was hungry. Which meant I wasn't in bed for another hour because there's eating, and my 3 different eye drops, and dental hygiene like flossing and brushing...

The play was held in a tent off the Hudson so it got chilly as the night wore on. Lots of empty seats. No wonder my friend got a BOGO for her ticket purchase. It was an interesting experience although I can't say I'd recommend it. I'll embed a 2019 production (available on YouTube) below in case you want to view it. Because I've watched countless episodes of The Simpsons, I feel qualified to say that certain nuances about Mr. Burns the character in the play just don't ring authentic.

I'm just happy I made it to the gym for five days straight...

Sore Shoulder Workout

There was no line at the pharmacy window when I went to pick up one of my glaucoma meds yesterday, so I asked them if they had the covalent shot. They did. So I got my second booster and a flu shot literally an hour after I'd finished at the gym. Unusually, the first shot made my arm sore immediately. And the second shot didn't help. Neither were painful, but I could feel soreness radiate from the injection site on the medial delt. (Yes, I made sure to wear a tank under my button down for easy access.)

I get a flu shot every year because I'm the person who has the most awful reaction to the mildest flu (like the Russian or Taiwan variety). I had a booster last December and I attribute that to the mild symptoms I experienced after my son got me sick right after the winter school break. I've been waiting for the covalent booster because it targets the most prevalent variety currently circulating in our area. Some of my friends are "elderly" and I exercise in a gym full of seniors. I don't want to be responsible for someone else's serious illness. I also don't want to get sick, and genetics is a crapshoot. My brother's gotten seriously ill more than once. My immune system is probably better than his, but by how much? I dunno and I don't really want to find out the hard way.

Normally after a shot, I feel a pinch and mild soreness the next day. Unlike yesterday when I thought I could feel the fluids being injected! Resulting in immediate soreness! Maybe it was because I had exercised a few hours earlier? And why do we get sore from these injections? I've had shots where there were no side-effects whatsoever. Besides the response from the immune system to the "intruder alert foreign substance detected," there is also the amount of foreign liquid being injected into the muscles. I don't normally get two shots at once so yesterday was the exception. And I'm not sure why the deltoid is the muscle of choice for such shots either .

Which leads me to today's workout. A sore shoulder doesn't impact the cardio portion. Thank goodness I did pull-ups yesterday! The only time the shoulder bothered me was during the core and stretching part of my routine, especially Bird Dogs since I have to hold one arm straight out in front of me. I was concerned enough to abbreviate my DB Shoulder program as well, nixing the 25s from the line-up. My hands were wobbly last week and there's no need to risk hitting myself in the face this week, although truthfully, I didn't notice any soreness while I was performing any of the movements.

I'm thinking I'm not going to be sore tomorrow and maybe I'll be brave and venture onto a different cardio machine, just for fun.

Backward Shin Splints

I got to the gym and it was crowded, with Lazy Pedals and his pal Middle-age Guy pedaling side by side on two of four ellipticals. I don't like the other two so I choose a different type of machine altogether. All the LifeFitness cross-trainers are vacant so I get on #3. (Number 2 doesn't have a usable cup holder and Number 1 is right next to the Functional Gym. There are more machines to the left but I like the one in the middle.)

It's been a while since I've used one of these. This is not my preferred cardio machine so I cut time down by 10 minutes. And, as a test, I do the 5-minute "cool down" backwards. It's very uncomfortable and eventually my shins start to complain. Yep, pedaling backwards is giving me shin splints. This machine also makes my toes numb if I pedal forward for too long. Suffice it to say, I don't use this unless I have to, or I've completely forgotten why I shouldn't.

At some point I'll use the Expresso Bike or the Octane "elliptical" again. Stationary bikes are boring (plus sitting on my butt makes me feel guilty about not moving). The stair climber can be challenging, but again, after a while it's also kind of boring. That's the reason I change my footing a lot while walking up the machine. The erg rower makes my hands numb and I overheard a lady complain about wrecking her back on it. Yeah, I'm even timid about using the Seated Cable Row just because of how sensitive that lower back/sciatica issue can be.

But the worst machine, hands down, is the treadmill. Especially since the handles that monitor your heart rate are up in the air, and in my case, over my head, which makes my hands and arms go numb and I feel like those old-time bikers with the monkey handlebars, aka ape hangers. I don't know what the manufacturer was thinking in designing this piece of equipment!

The Aerobics Room is oddly empty even though Boot Camp is on the schedule. I also haven't seen gym owner today although there are other staffers. Small arm circles have replaced the shoulder circles but another common exercise is causing concern: the back and tricep stretch (clasp hands behind your back and straighten the arms, pulling the shoulders back) seems to be stressing the tricep and lat. WTH? I've been doing this stretch for ages so it doesn't make sense for it to suddenly cause issues... Ugh.

My forearms don't give up until the second set of pull-ups. I thought about skipping the second set completely but figured I had time so... But tomorrow's probably going to suck because I got my combo flu shot today and my shoulder is already sore. Tomorrow's supposed to be shoulder day, and later I'm going to see a show called "Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play." My girlfriend got tickets (buy one get one free) because it got very good reviews, although she's never watched The Simpsons. So, I'll probably enjoy it but I'm not sure she will...

Rainy Tuesday

It's supposed to rain all day intermittently but there's not much accumulation. The lawn is a bit greener though. And it's very warm and humid both inside and outside the gym. There's such relief when the a/c finally kicks on while I'm pedaling furiously. (I look like I've climbed out of the pool when I'm done.) Mileage is a tad better today although the heart rate monitor is all over the place. I'm not concerned.

Well, not enough to actually pester a doctor about it and get one of those heart rate stress tests... the last thing I want is to be on meds that slow my heart down and make me feel tired and depressed (more than I already am), or worse, ablation "therapy" that kills certain heart muscle cells to even out the rhythm. Of course, having an erratic heart rate isn't good either: it can lead to horrible things like blood clots and subsequently, strokes...

I can skip pull-ups today which is good since my forearms are still sore. My abs are sore. And while I was pedaling, I felt my leg biceps threaten to spasm, but only faintly. It reminded me to be cautious about my foot positioning when I do triceps later.

Keeping my legs slightly extended helps to prevent potential spasms. It's more difficult only because the base of Breaker Inclined Bench has been backed up against the flat Breaker Bench I'm using. And the benches are not aligned so only my right foot meets the standing base (for spotters to use while standing behind someone on the Inclined Bench). The benches are too heavy for me to move so I just use as is.

I'm so short that the only way I keep my feet planted is to put them on the gray bracing bar under the Breaker Bench headrest. I'm positioned backward with my feet on the base and my head just gracing the edge of the bottom of the bench itself. It's not a problem with the Skull Crushers, but the Rip Skulls need me to anchor myself when I raise my arms over head and past the bench. The shoulders and lats don't hurt today. Only the elbow complains, but that's not unusual.

I read a mildly interesting article about what bugs to eat (and not to eat) in a survival situation. Of course I think of Bear Grylls because he'll do anything for the camera. Les Stroud is more authentic, but he usually doesn't eat anything while he's in survival mode, and we joke that he just starves while waiting for rescue. He has more credibility but Bear is probably worth a lot more money...

Hedges

My forearms are still sore from trimming the hedges with hand clippers this past Saturday. Some folks use power tools and I suppose I could've plugged in the electric hedge trimmer but that would've meant wrestling with a hundred feet of orange cord snaking out the front door and down the walkway into the driveway and around my car. And I still would've needed to stop to occasionally use the parrot-beak loppers for thicker entanglements. It was 80F in the blazing sun on Saturday but I got what needed to be trimmed done. Autumn is literally just days away...

Yesterday I got to stand around in light drizzle while my son and some members of his BSA troop helped him with his Eagle Project. The hardest, most-time critical aspect is done now so we're happy! That meant hand-digging post holes below the frost line (42") in 5 separate locations (already approved and certified not to have hidden power lines, gas lines, water lines). But there was rock. Or lots of smaller rocks. Holes had to be dug before the threat of frost and no one is sure whether this Autumn will be mild or harsh.

Posts have already been cut and need to be set in concrete at the next work session which is next weekend. Hopefully, my husband will be able to supervise this time. Since he got stuck at work over this weekend, I had to take the dogs to the park early and they missed out on having playmates. All the dog park people did wave at me as they passed by our group of dirt-covered boys digging and shoveling.

Today I'm on the elliptical by 7:30 but I'm having trouble building up any speed. Which means I'm barely making distance or steps. But I get my sweaty 35 minutes done as well as both sets of pull-ups. My forearms aren't happy with the second set though. It's a struggle after the first dozen. The right shoulder feels okay so I'll try my normal Skull Crusher Rip Skull combo tomorrow and see how that goes...

Friday Combo

I awoke to a brisk 54F morning but still managed to get myself all hot and sweaty on the elliptical. Everything feels okay, within reason, ignoring the sporadic odd aches and twinges in my wrists, fingers, metatarsals, lower back. Yep, just as I was congratulating myself on not having any sciatica symptoms, my lower back stiffens up as a warning. There's a Body Pump class later in the Aerobics Room so there's some equipment laid out on the floor. Zumba was yesterday, and apparently gym owner is teaching a Boot Camp class mid-week. Truthfully, I didn't think he had it in him to do more than one-on-one training.

Today, during pull-ups, I feel an ache in the back of my triceps that stretches down into the right lat. Well, that's different. And disturbing. It didn't impact my pull-ups, but since this has never happened to me before, I'm a bit wary. I don't want to do something weird and make it worse, because it can always be worse. Luckily, it doesn't impede planks or push-ups or air squats.

I argue with myself about how deep to go and how straight I should be in the up position. Do I need to thrust my hips out slightly when I stand up? Meanwhile, I read an article about deep squats, aka "Asian squats" and have to agree that ankle flexibility is key, and body proportions such as mine (short legs, long body) makes this movement much easier. Because it's always been easy for me.

I don't want to skip shoulders so I bail on the second pull-up set. There's no bar on the one available Inclined Breaker Bench. It's telling that all these type benches have rubber hoses or bungee cords strapping the uprights to the base. The novelty of having the upright pivot forward to position the bar over the chest didn't make up for the annoyance of having a bar holder that eventually always flops forward.

I used DBs in all the movements and only worry when I get to the 25s. My child-size hands have trouble balancing the DB (especially the left) when pushing up for Inclined Presses. DBs are nicer in that I can drop my elbows deeper than if I were holding the bar (something to do with how my elbows and wrists position). The strain in the right tricep/lat isn't very noticeable with any of the three exercises no matter the weight. But the wobbling left hand makes me a little anxious so I only do one set instead of three.

Oatmeal has gotten very expensive to buy. What used to cost about $3 is now priced over $6 and sometimes closer to $9. For plain ol' oatmeal! Ugh. The sale price of a small container of 5-grain hot cereal catches my eye. I'll try almost anything if the price is cheap enough, as long as it doesn't look too iffy. Like "Danish" cookies made in India. Nope. Sorry. Not gonna buy those. But 5-grain cereal that doesn't contain sunflower seeds or anything I might find indigestible sounds good.

This brand has oats, rye, triticale (a wheat-rye hybrid), barley, and golden flax. The only thing that might be concerning is the flax, because I've eaten flax as a topping on cereal, and that gave me a stomach ache. But maybe "golden flax" is different from what I ate ("brown" flax)? I'm okay with chia seeds too, except they get into my teeth and are hard to floss out. I follow the directions for microwaving it, and not unexpectedly, nuking a cup of water and 1/3 cup of cereal in a microwave-safe bowl does not go well. I use the "minute plus" button and everything looks good for minutes one and two (stirring in between).

I should've hit 30 seconds for the next phase. Instead, some time during the 3rd minute, cereal geysered up over the bowl and made a sticky gluey mess. Good thing I had a paper plate on top to contain it. Regular oatmeal does this too, but doesn't need 3 minutes. (One minute and 40 seconds is enough.) If I add extras like fruit or nuts, the cereal won't overheat as readily, but timing is very finicky. I do plain today just to see if I can actually eat this without suffering from digestive woes. (Walnuts give me indigestion, while pecans don't. And although nutritionists like to tell everyone to eat walnuts, I'll stick to pecans.)

The cereal is tasty with a chewy texture, but it'll be better when I add dried mulberries and maybe a half scoop of whey powder. (Yeah, I've got a half tub of Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey vanilla ice cream flavor protein powder that expired Nov 2019. But it still smells and tastes like it should, and I've read several online posters stating that their own "expired" whey protein is still good years later.) I finally found the expiration stamp after contacting ON... it's the one place I didn't look: on the bottom of the jug. Figures!

It's Always Something...

My son, like a lot of teenagers, is not adapting well to early morning classes. I get him up to meet the school bus after he's had a mere half hour of sleep. Because he was up all night. Because he fell asleep right after his kung fu class at 6 in the evening and only woke up to eat dinner and help me walk the dogs at 9. And then he was up all night.

I fear for his college life next year when I won't be the one to wake him. He's slept through every alarm on his phone, whether it's right under his head or across the room. My version of waking him is to pull his covers off and turn on the lights. It works...

There are fewer people at the gym today, probably because it's Thursday. After pedaling through cardio, I plop myself down on a mat in the Aerobics Room. Today there's Zumba at 9:30, taught by not gym owner. No pull-ups today. My abs are a wee bit sore, but the front right delt feels iffy. Rotating arms in large circles is usually okay but today it's not. And the following movement, rotating just shoulders forward tiny circles and backward tiny circles is also not painless. Because these movements are after planks and push-ups, I'm not concerned. Until I'm on the bench doing Skull Crushers and Rip Skulls. I'm surprised and slightly worried now.

Skull Crushers are fine. The elbows get a little stressed toward the last reps. However, Rip Skulls put a strain on the right anterior delt today, especially when I raise my outstretched arms over my face and down past the top of my head. After the second set, I replace that movement with another set of Skull Crushers. The elbows complain a little but not as much as that one delt. Tomorrow I'll probably just do cardio, core and pull-ups. And I'm going to rethink those arm circles...

Four Day Holiday

I thought about going to the gym on Labor Day because the gym was open until 3 pm. I also thought about going to the gym yesterday, technically the first day back for the new school year. But in my town, only for those kids transitioning from one building to the next, i.e., preschool to grade school, grade school to middle school, middle school to high school. It finally rained though. And that meant all day.

I even took the dogs to the park in the rain, and although no one else was there, the pups did run about for a few minutes. We only stayed 20 minutes and the rest of the day we kept inside. However, the county is still under a drought watch because a day and a half of rain isn't enough to make up for an entire season of blistering sun.

Today was the first day back for everyone else. So this morning I got up at 6 to get my son to the school bus stop before 6:45. A new kid moved into the big house at the very end of our road and he and his dad were waiting for the school bus as well as the kid with the nuisance beagle (thankfully she wasn't at the bus stop). We're the only ones in a car and we live the closest to the stop, but I'm also going to the gym once all the boys are headed to school. New dad jogs back up the road before the bus actually arrives.

Even though I was covered from head to toe in rain gear, I got a bug bite on my hand. And of course, it's at the base of my pinky palm side. Meaty palm side which is impossible to scratch. So my hand hurts. And intermittently, my right foot hurts and right elbow. I have weird, oddly loosely flexible joints which means I managed to get my jaw to stop clicking when I chew but my ears feel clogged because maybe my jaw's not quit aligned correctly. All it takes is for me to sleep a little off-side and the jaw is out, or the neck, shoulder, spine, hip, knee...

Sporadic pain is very distracting. While pedaling, I kept wondering if my hand was going to put up with doing pull-ups. Then my foot would hurt. Or my ankle. As it turns out, pull-ups were just fine! Both times! Because I'm done with cardio by 8, I can use the Aerobics Room without worrying about the 9:30 class. I'm surprised to see the gym owner in there setting up weights and step-up platforms. I glance at the schedule taped to the door to confirm class isn't until 9:30. And it isn't, but I'm really surprised to see gym owner's name as the class instructor. Whoa. So, now he's not paying an outside instructor anymore to come 3X a week? One of the front desk gals used to do it but she might be busy or maybe not well. I haven't seen her around too much.

Back in the day, gym owner used to have a few guys working as front desk AND fitness trainers, but now if anyone is looking for specific help, he's the one doing it. Just like there's only one faucet working in the rest room. Because those battery-operated auto-sensor faucets are only great if they work, and a lot of times they don't work. If both faucets are actually working on any given day, then it's likely that one of the auto soap dispensers isn't. Or one of the two paper towel dispensers isn't either. Or the auto flush in one of the three stalls. The problem with all these touch-free auto systems is that there's no manual override for when things go wonky. Well, at least there's still plenty of hot water in the manually-operated shower.

Friday Before the Long Weekend

It was a delightful 56F this morning when I awoke. You can tell I'm not a hot weather gal 'cuz, like my dogs, cooler temps makes me much happier. The gym is moderately crowded with folks exercising in anticipation of the holiday weekend. Again, I didn't sleep well so I'm dragging a bit during cardio. Core and stretches are fine. Again, only one person, then just two other regulars in the Functional Gym area. No kids. Because they're at school! (Except for mine who's still asleep because we live the next town over and our schools don't open until after the long weekend, not before!)

Both inclined breaker benches seem to be in use so I drag myself over to the Smith machine. I haven't been on this contraption in a really long time! The attached Olympic bar is counterbalanced so it's only a fraction of the 45 lbs most bars weigh in at. I'm guessing it's 25 lbs now. (I've tried to find out what the counter balance is to determine what "just the bar" would weigh in at, but that information isn't available online and I don't know what experiment I could perform to determine it.)

I drag over a few DBs and do my sets. I keep my hands rotated pinkies up for the first set of lateral raises because it's the warm up and only 10 lbs. But increasing to the 15s puts a bit of stress on my elbows, so my arms are slightly bent and my hands are turned thumbs up. The adjustable bench seat is higher than that on the inclined breaker bench so I cross my ankles and "balance" on the seat while doing Inclined Presses. To do anything else puts too much stress on my sciatic nerve. The 25s feel a bit heavy today but the shoulders and lower back don't complain. However, I'm running late to bring my dogs to the park so I only do two final sets instead of three.

The dogs are disappointed that we've come to the park too late to play with their friends. But after 45 minutes, three new dogs (who they've met once before) arrive and there is lots of play, chasing and boxing. Earlier, I bought generic Pepto Bismol liquid and tablets because the pups seem to be suffering from sporadic digestive woes. But I refrain from giving them anything until I see if making one small change makes any difference...

I've noticed that the eggs I've purchased lately seem a bit weird: cracked into a dish, the egg whites separate into a ring of thick and thin. And if boiled, the egg whites solidify into a normal inner ring and a sticky outer ring that is hard to remove from the shell. I've tried to look up this phenomena online but haven't been able to find the proper search engine to ask. I mention this because for the past two years, the dogs each have eaten one raw egg a day with no ill effects. But the raw whites have never looked like this either.

Are the eggs I've purchased lately the reason my dogs are now suffering digestive woes: loss of appetite and sporadic diarrhea? The expiration date is for October. I have no reason to doubt Land O' Lake brand although they're not my usual choice. Today, I beat the eggs and nuke them before adding them to the canned food, and both dogs eat all their food, unlike the past few days... This evening I'll see how they react to supper.

Maybe I Should Toss That Jug

In spite of finally receiving my order of whey protein (Amazon lost it and then redelivered it a week late), I went back to the old 5 gallon plastic tub that still contained vanilla-flavored whey protein. I looked for an expiration date but couldn't find one anywhere. It's so old that I actually don't remember when I bought it and used it last. But it passed the sniff test, and the taste test. No signs of clumping or mold. No iffy odors.

I've been mixing it in my oatmeal after the bowl has cooled slightly. I know better than to try and "cook" with it because that just makes an unpalatable gummy mess. But maybe I should just do what reasonable people do, and toss the jug and use the package I just bought. Because I'm sure the protein has degraded somewhat, meaning that 1/2 a scoop isn't giving me 15 gms of protein. I'm not sure what it's giving me...

I get to the gym at a reasonable hour and realize that school started today for this town, but not my town. Our schools don't start until next week. Which means there are no kids. Yaaay! At least, not until later this afternoon when school is out.

Pedaling furiously, I finally make 2.9 miles on the elliptical. Yaaay me! And I manage to do both sets of pull-ups today. I'm disappointed that I can't keep my legs positioned properly though, with ankles crossed and knees bent to form a sort of triangle: after 5 reps my right hamstring threatens to spasm and I have to straighten my legs. At least the crossed ankles helps to prevent body swaying. Trying to pull up with a flaccid torso and dangly legs makes the movement so much harder and expends a lot of non-productive energy.

There's only one person in the Functional gym area, a red-haired regular I've seen around for some years. She bears a passing resemblance to Miranda on Sex in the City. She does her yoga stretches and I do my core exercises with plenty of space between us. My knee is bothering me. It's the same knee that sporadically twinges every now and then and I wondered if there's an issue with the meniscus. But then I see that today it's sore with a big purple bruise and vaguely remember my dog slamming into me because he wanted to get past the Puppy Park gate yesterday. My knee doesn't have any of the symptoms of a meniscus injury, so it's not that...

My skin takes a long time to heal, probably because of the ichthyosis condition. Last week I wondered about a scabby-looking bruise on my thigh and only just remembered the skin biopsy I had done months ago. The discolored scar from a pigment biopsy is just starting to fade and that was done several years ago...

Summer's Gonna Be Unbearable

It was already near 60F when I woke up this morning. Already too freakin' hot! Dogs were panting after a few quick romps through the par...
