Squeaky Wheels

Today's Selfie
My grandmother used to tell me that the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Then my mother would counter with her father's admonition, an empty tin can makes the most noise. I'm hoping to be the former, not the latter. Searching online for a solution to the SouthPaw issue on the Nexersys, I came across the Nexersys FaceBook page. The company is introducing a new speed bag product which seems interesting but not very practical for a commercial gym. At least the FB page has walls related to their other products, and I post my question there. A few hours later, I actually get a response instructing me how to fix the issue!

When I get to the gym this morning, I immediately log in to my profile on the Nexersys and select Settings. There are options that can be clicked on, including Do Not Change My Stance. I also note that the machine has me listed as Gender Indeterminate, with blanks for Age and Weight. I wonder how the machine is going to behave now that I've updated my profile. I was already hitting too hard. Now it thinks I'm smaller and older than the average user. Is the machine totally going to freak when I do 3 rounds Beginner Level next Tuesday? I guess I'll find out!

Today I have on my new Ryka shoes. Now that I've threaded the laces through the last eyelets on the shoes, the laces are a reasonable length. My right heel also no longer wants to slip out. However, my right foot goes numb in the toes 15 minutes into the first cardio session. Just can't quite win.

I'm slow to adopt new social media technologies. Am I showing my age by being stubborn? I can't see the point to Twitter because I don't want to know what half the world is thinking at any given time. I don't have time for all this nonsense. And there's no reason for them to know my every mutterance or banal thought. However, I use FB to keep tract of friends, and to contact local companies. It works surprisingly well.

Today is a Cardio, Core and Everything Else Day. I do 30 minutes on the LifeFitness cross-trainer and get distracted by the TV because Kelly has Anderson Cooper as a guest co-host. And he's funny. My first set of pull ups is always a bit creaky. But not as bad as the set that follows all those push ups and planks. I keep my push up routine the same, but try to remember the plank variations I want to try today. Bird Dog is getting easier. Side Planks are a bit tough because I'm not quite sure where to put my feet. I save the Knee to Opposite Elbow planks for last, and toss in a few Camel and Cat lower back stretches between sets.

This 2nd set of pull ups is always the hardest because not only am I a bit breathless, but my abs and core are tired now. As I pull up, trying to keep my body straight and not swaying, I feel a twinge in the center of my stomach, just under the rib cage. Abs. Thank goodness doing the elliptical doesn't require any core work other than holding myself upright! I punch in Intervals for 30 minutes.

I use my hoodie to blot the sweat off my face and arms when I'm done. Time for another set of pull ups. These are easier. Whew! People seem to freak a little when I stretch at the Cage, probably because I can get my leg up over my head. But they could too, if they worked at it. People complain that they're not flexible, that they wish they could do that. But they don't make the attempt. Just as well that I'm plugged into my tunes and can't hear them. What I can hear is The Mayor. Honestly, I don't know why he talks so loud, or why he feels compelled to talk so much.

After a few Pistol Squats and most of a good Mat Stretch, I go back to the Cage for one more set of pull ups. The first 8 are always easier than the last 4. Then as I'm hanging there, debating how I feel, I do 3 more from the fully extended position. I don't normally fully extend my arms because it's hard on my elbows, but since these are the last reps before the weekend, I figure I'm safe. Yaaay!

My son has set up a play date with another child he rides the school bus with. He's going to get off the bus at that child's house, then call me when he wants to come home. I'm a bit nervous since this is a new thing, but I realize he's growing up and becoming more independent. Next year he'll be at the middle school. And I should probably get a job. And probably spend a lot less time working out, and writing about it.

Friday Workout
(6.49 miles total cardio. I should probably be happy with 6 miles. A study reported that running or jogging at a fast pace is associated with a greater risk of death, equivalent to not exercising at all. Jeeze. Can't win! )

The Exercise Cure

After standing in line for over two hours yesterday, my left hip was out of sorts. I'm not sure why, but it hurt to walk, and once we got inside the church to pay our respects, the hip felt even worse. Resting it didn't improve matters and it was just as creaky this morning when I took the dog for a walk. I had already planned to modify my workout so I took advantage of the empty Step Mill when I got to the gym. 15 minutes became 20 minutes. The hip hurt at first, but loosened up and eventually normalized. Cured! I had the Step Mill set to a pace of 6, which is faster than LISS (3) but not quite running up the stairs. It took me a good 15 minutes to even feel warm, and I had my blue hoodie zipped up! I see workman traipsing through the gym so I guess the new A/C has been installed in the exercise room. People must be on vacation the last week before most schools start. I only see a handful of regulars like Shaggy, Maroon, The Mayor, Ollie, Big Glasses Dude and PonyTail.

I'm not doing any HIIT or LISS this week. I'm also not eating properly either since my son is home and I have to feed him reasonable lunches. This inadvertently leads to snacking on my part. The scale tells me that I'm heavier (111 lbs today), but I can also see it in the mirror. However, I'm not unhappy about being stronger, or at least feeling stronger. Today I add another set of hammer grip pull ups. That makes three sets of 12 reps. I discover that it's the pull ups that are making my abs sore because I'm curling my legs to my chest to keep from swaying. I also accidentally increased my planks, going from 90 seconds to 120 seconds on two out of three sets because I wasn't really paying attention. I still can't do the Bird Dog with a straight lower leg. Balance is everything, and makes the move feel a bit like yoga. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Dand, or Hindu Push Up. But usually the butt is higher,
like in a Downward Dog position
Push ups took more time than expected as I'm trying a new version. Actually, the first set was just 50 Regular push ups. The second set was 25 Dive-Bomber push ups. That's probably the most Dive-Bombers I've ever done in one set. The third set was a new movement called Hindu Push Ups (or Dand in martial arts). It looks like a Dive-Bomber, but isn't. The key difference is that the Dive-Bomber has you roll back into the start position with your shoulders pushing, and the Hindu keeps your arms straight while your back is arched. Then your hips actually pull you back into a Downward Dog position. It's not as hard on the shoulders, and stretches the upper back. I only do 20 of those, fairly slowly. I'm pretty sure I can do more. Maybe on Friday.

Dive Bomber: note the bent elbows
from position 4 to position 5.
I do another set of hammer pull ups before getting on the Precor for 30 minutes of Performance Program #3. I only make 2.68 miles even though I'm pedaling like crazy. I see Shaggy approach the meek new member on the treadmill. He's literally inches from her face talking to her as she walks, while he stands on the side rail of her machine. She's small, middle-aged but not in bad shape. If she doesn't already know him, then this is either flattering, or creepy. Her body language doesn't suggest intimacy. People who are obviously dating don't get this close at the gym. I'm thinking Shaggy has personal boundary issues, and I'm really glad he's not my problem.

Tomorrow I'm going to whack the Nexersys machine again. I want to see how my hands hold up to a twice weekly session now that I've been practicing my hand-wrapping (yes, that's what I did in front of the TV last night). Friday, I'll do cardio and whole body again. I think I'm actually more tired from this workout than my previous HIIT cardio and weights. Go figure.

The Myth of Multi-Tasking

I almost look tall!
Nowhere are people more stubborn about focused efforts than in weight training. People figure they're either going to get big, and hopefully strong. Or they're going to get lean and sexy. They save cardio for rest days or don't do it at all. They don't think that stretching and flexibility exercises bring anything useful to the table. There's no such thing as multi-tasking at the gym. You can't carry on an animated conversation and actually get a good cardio workout unless you're already disciplined enough to move at a quick enough pace. Few are.

Of course, I try to do it all, have my cake and eat it as well. Get stronger, good looking muscles, build cardio endurance and increase flexibility. But I don't do it all at the same time. And I don't believe in "periodization" which means you spend 3 months bulking up and getting bigger, and 3 months getting leaner and maybe improving your cardio function. I just do different things on different days, but all in the same week. It's a different routine each day to prevent over-working a muscle group, and also, to cover "all my bases" so that I haven't neglected any one body part, including the lungs and heart! They might be classified as organs, but organs need loving too.

Short legs!
Lately I've been working on increasing my cardio efficiency, measured in mileage. I've been pushing myself to hit and surpass the 7-mile mark for the past several weeks. When I first started, I was aiming at the 5-mile mark. That's progress for you. It's been 4 years and I've only managed 2 more miles. LOL! But of course, mileage is not my only focus. One thing at a time while I'm doing it. Doesn't mean I can't do it all in one workout. Just means I can't do it simultaneously. I figure we have a lot of different muscles. They don't all get worked out all at once no matter what it is you're doing. So there will always be muscles in reserve, and energy in reserve for the things you didn't do. As long as you're sensible about your plan, you should be able to accomplish multiple goals. The body is more resilient than you think. Trust me!

You can find anything online
I've given up on sit-ups until I find a variation that doesn't take the skin off my tailbone. I'm actually tossing out cotton underwear due to the holes that have formed there and only there! Today I do the Torso Twist machine, some crunches and lower ab scissors. What's exciting are the plank variations I've decided to test. I do a straight 90 seconds of a full plank. Take a 20 second rest and then the next variation: 30 seconds full; 30 seconds right leg elevated; 30 seconds left leg elevated. Of course, I'm not doing this in the elbow plank position which would change the angle a bit. For the last variation, I start off again with 30 seconds full plank, and then 30 seconds with one arm elevated, 30 seconds for the other arm. Again, I'm in full plank position. It kind of looks like a yoga position. I'm not sure if it'll be easier or harder from an elbow plank position. All I know is that elbow planks hurt my shoulders so it'll be a while before I decide to try that variation.

I have enough time for a partial stretch at the Stretch Cage and then I'm off to shower and change. My son and I are meeting friends to watch Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. It turns out to be an excellent film with beautifully framed shots, excellent action sequences and well-delivered humorous dialogue. I'd see this movie again. Just like I'd see AntMan again. And Guardians of the Galaxy again. Wait, I've seen Guardians of the Galaxy at least 3 times, but I'd see it again! Turns out that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is slated to open in 2017. Wahoo!

But I'd like to know when the Shaun the Sheep movie will finally arrive. Seriously. I love Shaun the Sheep, and Wallace and Gromit. 'Nough said.

NSAIDs Are Making Me Fat

Yesterday I stopped taking the daily dose of NSAIDs that I've been using to tolerate the discomfort from my sciatica. For weeks my sciat...
