Late Afternoon Caffeine

Big "new" iPhone 6+
My hubs and I both had interrupted sleep last night, probably due to the late afternoon hit of caffeine at Starbucks on the way home from the Mall. Going to bed on time didn't help as I just stared at the clock even though I was really really tired. This morning I dreamt I was at my old job in the City, looking through a work folder for the Lilly product Cymbalta. Yes, that was one of my accounts. And then the alarm went off and I got my son up and off to school, walked and fed the dog and then crawled right back into bed. I didn't drift off right away though and setting my alarm so I wouldn't oversleep actually made things worse. Eventually I just turned everything off, and woke up when the garbage truck came roaring down the road.

I still had time to make it to the gym and do an abbreviated workout. There's now on-going road repair work on the main thoroughfares so I'll have to count that towards my commuting time until winter hits. Today's a Push Day. I guess I'll sacrifice a round of cardio, and pull ups. As long as I get one set in, all is not lost. Because I'm a slug over the weekends, I feel it's important to get at least one set of pull ups, and one 30-minute cardio session to kick the week into gear. I know some people feels that that's enough exercise, but I'm not those people. I'm not a "More Is Better" type of gal either, but I definitely know my limits, and this isn't close to pushing them. Be honest with yourself. Are you really at your limit, or skating along? Not that I advocate pushing limits for every workout. That's counter-productive and can lead to injuries that'll lay you up for weeks. No one needs that!
But does it take better photos?

My husband got himself a new iPhone 7. He hadn't planned to, but he somehow cracked the screen on his 6+, through the protective screen shield! The phone wasn't behaving properly either. The repair shop guy said it would take a few days to fix, and that the phone also needed an additional replacement part. My hubs can't be without his phone so he bought the latest iPhone 7, and then got the 6+ fixed. Once it was repaired, he offered it to me because I have the tiny iPhone 5. Today I took it on a field run to see how I liked it. Because it's so big, I worried I wouldn't be able to put it in my pocket. It has an OtterBox protective case so that makes it even bigger than it really is. Luckily, all my apps transitioned seamlessly from the iCloud backup. And so far, with the exception of some photos appearing dark, the phone works well. It even appears to get a signal in spots where my old phone couldn't, so that's a big bonus right there.

I see some regulars just finishing up their workouts... The Mayor, Shaggy (who is now growing out mutton-chop sideburns into a full face cover), Walrus Mustache, Ollie, Cowardly Lion... Once I finish the last set of the DB lateral raise superset with reverse flyes, I'm off to shower and change. I get down to meet the school bus with just a minute to spare. Whew!

Getting It Done

I let my son sleep in as long as possible before rousing him so I could get to the gym before 11 am. With only a 2-hr window for child care that ends at 1 pm, I didn't have much choice. I suggested to him that next time I might let him sleep in while I go to the gym. I'm just worried he'd freak out, but he told me that I could tape a note to the bathroom mirror. "What about on your phone?" I suggested. "No, I'll see the bathroom note first, and then I won't be looking all over the house for you. If I'm wondering where you are, I might not see the note on the phone." Okay, fair enough. Chances are good that he'll still be asleep by the time I get back anyway...

Two hours would be enough time if little things like stashing my gear in the locker, using the restroom, undressing and putting all my stuff away in the plastic bags I've designated specifically for gym shoes and dirty gym clothes didn't actually eat up time. I'm on the only LifeFitness cross-trainer that goes to Zero; all the rest start at One, which slows me down and doesn't actually feel like a better workout. My right foot has been acting up, most noticeably when I'm doing cardio. For the past few months my hammer toes have had intermittent spasms, and sometimes I feel as if my heels have lost any semblance of cushioning that makes walking bearable.

This looks really comfy!
Today, toes on my right foot seem to lean left, toward the errant bunion big toe, causing a sensation of crowding inside my trainer. Ugh, don't you hate it when your ligaments and nerves have their own agendas? I'm fearful of the second toe crossing over the big toe due to tendon and soft tissue issues. But I'm not sure what I can do about it. Don't even mention doctors because most of them don't know anything except what they've been programmed to do: charge a lot of money and suggest surgery. Uh, no thanks.

Worse, my "good foot", the left one, starts to develop a slight numbness as well. Maybe it's that blasted aging process where you lose the fat padding on various places in your body. I'm hoping they're not all migrating to my belly and hips. That would really suck.

My first set of pull ups is passable. I've gotten 31 without any issues, and I probably could've gotten more, but I'm in a hurry. I knock out push ups, crunches and planks, then a knee-in. I don't even have time to consider any alterations to the routine, like maybe doing smaller sets of different push ups instead of one giant set of plain ol' wide hand push ups.

I don't even consider doing a set of push ups before getting on the elliptical because that would add time. I'm sandwiched between two old men. I think we're all doing versions of one of the Performance Programs because those are the only programs that ask you pedal backwards occasionally. I had to skip doing this yesterday after kickboxing the machine, and my hips felt off this morning when I woke up. Pedaling backwards remedies a lot of the sciatic problems I have so I do this instead of Intervals if I have to make a choice.

My last set of pull ups is a bear, although not at first. But now that I've set the "bar" higher, completing a full set is harder. Of course, because that's how goals work, right? My hands and arms are starting to really tired as I approach 40 reps. From a full extension, I can just get my forehead to the bar. Okay, that's not quite a rep. Maybe half a rep? I've stopped using the FitNotes app for the time being because I don't have a routine set up for the Super Abbreviated Workout AND I have to enter my stats into my phone's notepad no matter what. It's a duplication of effort, and it's not really netting any benefits. The only thing I appreciate about the FitNotes is that it does remind me of exercises I might forget. Not doing those movements is then a conscious determination, and not an accidental moment of distraction.

It didn't occur to me until I read an article in Men's Health that doing push ups and pull ups was considered a test of manly abilities. Is that why the younger guys give me such an odd look? But now that I think about it, I rarely see women (or girls) doing push ups or pull ups on a regular basis. Because usually they can't. No perseverance, I guess. I do it because it's obvious: push ups and pull ups are the most efficient body weight exercises for the upper body and core muscles. Cardio (pedaling on the elliptical and/or cross-trainer) works the rest. Friends advocate rowing as a full body cardio exercise, but I don't think my hands would put up with it since I have to change my grip every few minutes to prevent my hands from developing stress and pressure injuries when I do cardio. As blessed as I am genetically (I'm strong, flexible and maintain muscle mass easily), I have many athletic deficiencies (tiny hands, overly flexible & shallow joints, and sensitivity to pressure). But at least I'm having fun.

Gift Horse

Today is my 3rd day this week working out and it's an abbreviated one because I'd forgotten I had a follow-up appt with my primary doc. Yesterday I had a follow-up appt with my eye doc, who is not the glaucoma specialist. (Great news! my IOPs are 10 and 14! but that funky yellow tint I see in my left eye is due to teeny tiny cataracts. Boo!) Yesterday was also a school half-day, so no gym time. Wednesday I worked a few hours wrapping assorted caramels for the Holiday rush. I even got to bring some luscious leftovers home! Can anyone say Salted Dark Chocolate Caramels?

I'm determined to get most of my cardio in today and figure that I need to leave with enough time to compensate for the traffic delays that road work brings. So I cut my cardio time by 10 minutes and totally skip the DBs today. It's enough that I get two sessions of cardio (30 and 20 min), and a lot of pull ups, push ups and planks. I'm really tired by the time I attempt my 3rd set of pull ups, but I still manage to squeak out the last 3. But I'm really surprised that the gym scale reads 107.2 lbs. I already know that if I drink an apple ale or two with supper every night, I don't lose any weight. I did have a few umbrella drinks while on vacation, and ate every lunch and dinner out. Breakfast was vanilla-flavored Greek style yogurt which helped to shield my stomach from morning coffee. I need the caffeine but my stomach is still very sensitive. So I'm back to what I weighed before I went on vacation. That's okay with me!

My doc wants to know how my stomach is. It's fine as long as I'm careful with fat, and spicy foods. I haven't been taking the apple cider vinegar because it gave me wicked heartburn last time, and I already know I have a hiatal hernia and a tendency toward GERD. My sis tells me that our parents were pre-diabetic so now I'm ultra-cautious with fats and sugars. When I complained to my sis about not being able to eat coconut oil (it makes me really ill) she says she rubs it onto her skin after showering. I've been doing that lately too. Much better than eating it!

I complain to my primary about the intermittent itching I feel around my neck. For a long time, I had itching on my belly skin, then my lower back. Now it's starting on my inner forearms and right thigh. She tells me that she suffered the same thing last year, and finally consulted a colleague of hers who happens to be a dermatologist. The advice was to take Claritin® 3x a day for 2 weeks.

My doc argued that the dosage doesn't allow for 3x a day, but the colleague insisted. Instead, my doc took it 2x a day for three weeks. Then once a day for another month. And the itching went away, just as mysteriously as it came. No topical has worked so far for me, not hydrocortisone, not topical Benedryl®, not salves, creams, or antiseptics. The doc suspects an allergic hypersensitivity. "Do this for a few weeks, but here are the names of two dermatologists, just in case." I bought some generic claritin on the way home. I don't want the red, rough skin on my neck (from all the scratching) to become permanent!

Oh yeah, I re-installed Firefox because Safari just isn't great at viewing a lot of sites, especially the weird "postcard" my son sent me from his Mission Mars trip while we were at Disney's Epcot Center!

Deciding Not To Decide

Because I've not worked out for three days, I feel as if I should be able to pick up from Friday's workout without any issues. Cardio goes well. But I'm having trouble completing all the reps for my push ups. Maybe lack of sleep is catching up with me? I did stay up too late, drink and eat too much. I don't feel bad, but I avoid even attempting pull ups. Pathetic. The GI doc did tell me to take it easy working out today, and I told him I was just doing cardio. Doing a couple hundred push ups is kind of like cardio, right?

I'm not entirely convinced that removing my gallbladder will cure my symptoms. Of course, doing nothing probably won't help either. The traditional 5 F's of gallbladder stones (cholelithiasis) are: Fair (Caucasian), Fat (BMI>30), Female, Fertile, Forty. There is talk of replacing Forty with Family since this is probably a heritable condition. So, other than being Female, I don't fit the typical gallstone patient profile. My sister also has some issues with GERD. But I don't have GERD. I don't even have gallstones anymore. What I have is sporadic pain where my gallbladder lives, but only when I do pull ups. Crazy.

I don't like the idea of snipping away organs just because they might be the cause of something evil. I'd like to see proof first. And I haven't, so I'm not convinced. If there were obvious gallstones, I'd say "Well, okay now, let's get rid of those suckers". But my body doesn't follow the rules as written. I just don't want it to surprise me in a bad way. I feel a little tired after the first cardio session but I can still knock out the first set of push ups. And planks. Diamond push ups are a bit harder. Seriously, I remember them being easier last time. I'm rushing because I still want to do another 30 min on the elliptical before showering. My son is in the Child Care Room, and we plan to see Hotel Transylvania 2 this afternoon.

I'm disappointed that I can only do 30 Dand push ups. Usually I can do 45. But today I can't. After another round of planks, I tackle the One-Leg Push Ups. Those I manage to finish. After Performance Program #3, I barely have time for a quick hamstring stretch before dashing off to the locker room. The gym scale reads 109 lbs. I guess eating brie, blue cheese, jarlsberg and crackers over the weekend has had an effect! I should probably stop though. I'd rather not get fat, even if I do keep getting junk mail for hearing aids, senior assisted living and funeral plots. I'm seriously having a problem with this "You're 55 So You're Old" thing. I don't suspect it gets any easier either.

I finally loaded some new songs onto my iPod like Where the Devil Don't Go (Elle King) and True Faith (New Order), and find myself grinning through Elle King's Exes and Ohs... Tomorrow I get to whack the machine. Yaaaay!

The Best-Laid Plans

I got up this morning, took an omeprazole pill with some water (which didn't sit well), fed and walked the dog, got my son up, dressed and fed before walking down to the school bus while it was a nippy 34°F. I had some green tea for caffeine, but no coffee since I can't drink it black and I'm due to see the doc for my annual at 11 am. But that's enough time to do part of a workout so off to the gym I go. 30 min on the elliptical, stretch the hamstrings, knock out most of my push ups and planks before time is up. I don't have time to do the One-Leg Push Ups. Oh well. I still have to change and shower and drive to my appointment. The scale says 108.2 lb which really surprises me considering I've actually been snacking a lot over the weekend. I even manage to have a small glass of sangria without repercussions.

The doc tells me it sounds an awful lot like my gallbladder, and reminds me that in 2012 I'd had an ultrasound showing some small gallstones. This explains my inability to eat fast food: I can't process the fat in it. Everything else is good, my BP is a weird 112/80 which is pretty damn close to what it was in HS (110/70). She's concerned about my weight loss though. That part doesn't really bother me. She sends me down the hall for a STAT ultrasound to see if my gallbladder is inflamed. If it is, I have to have surgery right away. What?! It's a good thing I haven't eaten since last night. The ultrasound takes a surprisingly long time because there are images of aorta, liver, stomach, pancreas and gallbladder, although it all looks like grainy black and white undersea footage from the '50s.

I go back to the doc's office and wait. She tells me that the report says my gallbladder appears normal. So no urgent surgical needs. She wants to see the blood work because elevated liver enzymes indicate gallbladder in spite of the ultrasound. It doesn't explain the odd soreness all along my right side, or why I feel pressure in my throat when the ultrasound tech presses on a certain spot on my liver. My doc says after the lab work she'll have a better idea of how to proceed, but she's leaning towards an endoscopy to see just what the heck is going on in there. Oh jeeze.

I'm not feeling great because I haven't eaten since last night but I have a few errands to run first. I stop at the bank, and then the tailor to drop off some clothes that need repair. It's 2:30 pm and there's a lot of traffic and especially school buses from the local high school and middle school. I wait to make a left turn onto a secondary road. A car at the stop sign on the secondary road is directly perpendicular to me, also waiting to make a left. I have right of way and I turn when it's clear. And he turns and hits my car. And keeps driving!
Door panel and wheel well
Inside door frame

Two different guys in different trucks tell me that they saw the whole thing. I pull over onto the shoulder and put my flashers on. I'm fuming so I get out of my car and start pacing, and cursing. A guy trails the other vehicle and makes him come back to the scene of the accident. It's a tiny old man with inch thick glasses, and good god, a walker. He looks like Moleman from the Simpsons. He had no idea he's hit me. Didn't see me. I'm incredulous. The "helpful" witness is a tad creepy, trying to "console" me by trying to hug me and pet my hair. I'm not a Yorkie! He reminds me of a chubbier, smoking Kripke from Big Bang Theory. And just as creepy. Yep. I text my husband and call the police to send an officer because I need a police report for insurance purposes.

Looks better than the other guy
Rear bumper out of alignment
My car has damage to the door panel, door frame and rear bumper. The other guy has smashed his headlamp and front bumper. He didn't know he hit me? He's 89 yrs old, and I hate taking away people's freedoms, but he shouldn't be driving. It was a bright sunny afternoon with good road conditions, and good visibility. I've seen Seniors drive through red lights, drive into the Exit Only, and one guy tried to PASS MY NEIGHBOR ON THE LEFT, WHILE SHE WAS MAKING A LEFT INTO A DRIVEWAY. And he's still on the road after he t-boned her car this summer.

When I get home I'm on the phone with the insurance company and then I have to meet the school bus. I only manage to eat the soothing yogurt and maple syrup after 4 pm. And then I make kale and pork for dinner. I saw a crock pot recipe for boneless pork roast that actually turned out pretty good: 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1/2 cup water, sliced onions under and atop the pork roast that's been pan-seared. Cook on low for 8-10 hours. Add carrots for the last hour. It's fork tender and tasty after 11 hours. I make my own BBQ sauce with ketchup, molasses and a touch of apple cider vinegar.

Now if only my abs would stop being sore. I'm tired of not being able to do pull ups, especially since I got so good at them! Tomorrow is whack the machine day, and I'm soooo looking forward to it.

Abbreviated Monday Workout

I'm glad I spent Saturday shoveling out parking spots for guests. It made my son's birthday party much less of a hassle. Although not having a house phone really kind of sucked because of a glitch with the Fios service (fixed today). While my husband fiddled with the laptops to set up a viable MineCraft server, I ran off to pick up the ice cream cake, and order several pizzas. Which I couldn't do from the house because we don't get any cell signal bars there. Two out of the expected five guests were sick so it was a rather intimate party. More of a play date. But we had pizza and ice cream cake, and my son had a great time. Then we parents each checked our phones (we do have WiFi) and discovered that not only was there a Winter Storm headed our way, but an additional Nor'easter. Bringing 12 to 24 and maybe 30 inches of snow. What?!

I'm having a heck of a time finding out what the storms are named. (Just like newspapers no longer automatically list someone's age anymore, or oddly, pertinent facts like a basketball player's height.) Friday was Iola. Next on the list, (according to the weather.com site "winter storm names") is Juno and Kari. Followed by Linus. Good grief.

Because it's 17°F this morning, and my son's backpack is heavy with traditional Chinese sweets, I drive him to the school bus stop. But first I have to warm up both my husband's car and my own, then move his out of our long narrow driveway and up the road, then move mine, then move his back. Then mine. So that when my hubs finally gets up at 9 am, he'll be able to load his stuff into the car and not have to lug it all up the road. Because he's driving to Boston to be at the airport tonight. For the entire week. And as long as I have the car running, I might as well go to the gym. Because of the storm, we all know (several times over) that today is Early Dismissal. Which means my son is at school for all of 2 1/2 hours. Which means it's Abbreviated Workout Day. But at least I get to work out.

I get to the gym before 9 am and all the cross-trainers are occupied. Okay, I can start with the Precor instead. I do 30 minutes of Intervals while trying to figure out my phone. It's a lot different since I upgraded the OS from 6 to 8 (totally skipping glitchy 7). I don't even stretch before glomming the Smith for my usual sets of benching. Afterwards, I see a lot of kids. The next town over actually closed their schools today. I notice a young blonde woman with nice arms. She's got an athletic build and probably plays a sport. Her friend is also working hard, but she's a tad chubbier and less athletic. I have my hoodie on most of the time until I have to put on wrist-wraps. I know the big guys are trying not to stare. Dang, I have some big arms. Cool.

There are no Inclined Benches so I skip Inclined Benching and move directly to DB Laterals and Reverse Flyes. There are also no 20 lb DBs. WTH? Whatever. I grab the 25s. I know I can do them because I've done them in the past. Yes, the distant past. I tell myself that as I go heavier I should cut my reps. But I don't listen much. Okay, I'm not bringing those weights all the way up to my shoulders either because I have too many joint issues. But I'm happy to knock out four sets. My arms look different these days. I think it's because somehow I'm bigger. But I just can't quite figure out where exactly. Oh well...

I do some abs, and have just enough time for 30 minutes on the cross-trainer. Because with limited time, cardio is more important to me. I do a quick Cage Stretch and off to shower. I'm also saving myself for the grueling task of shoveling out the driveway and walkway later. The Gov has already declared a State of Emergency ahead of the blizzard. Tomorrow's going to be a lot of fun. Yep.

The Virtue of Patience

I look at my calendar and realize that I've only been on this "3x weekly kickboxing" routine for about a month. Not long really. Still, I think I might only do this for another two weeks before changing my routine again, probably back to 2x a week with more lifting. I still don't feel recovered or fully rested. Still, I get my 5+ miles. But it's closer to 5.5 than 5.7 miles. Someone is on the Smith machine so I wait it out by doing a few sets on the Breaker Inclined Bench. It's been a while since I handled an actual Olympic bar. But it's not hard to bench just the bar. I'm about to do my 3rd set when I notice that the Smith is suddenly available and I scamper over to it and toss my towel on the bar to claim it. Then I trot back to un-rack the Breaker Incline Bench because I really hate people who don't re-rack.

I get several decent sets and feel pretty good about the Smith Inclined Bench. I admit that I hog the machine but truthfully, there's hardly anyone in the free weight area today. And apparently the Breaker Decline Bench got busted and is missing now. Smith RG BB Rows go well until I get to the last few sets because my grip starts to fail. I feel silly pulling out VGs just for 110 lbs so I don't. And I only do three sets of Smith SLDLs because my lower back is starting to tire. Everything else feels okay though. I extend my plank to 70 seconds. I think it's only hard because I sandwich the plank between sets number two and three of Dive Bomber Push Ups. My forearms are slick with sweat and I tend to slide a bit across the mat. It's a good workout. I like the way I look. It's going to be hard changing my routine again. I'll see how I feel about it in a few weeks.
