Making My Routine More Exciting

There's nothing more exciting than the unexpected. This can be good or bad, it all depends on your perspective. Due to the Holidays, this workout week is only 3 days long, and I like to put HIIT cardio in at least twice. Which means that today, a Cardio Day, will also have 33 minutes of HIIT on the elliptical, and two other cardio machines, depending on availability. For no apparent reason, I've decided that an hour of cardio is appropriate for Cardio Day. Health researchers always try to report the minimum amount of time and effort the average person needs to exert to reap the benefits of exercise, probably because only extremists would go further. I've read that 20 minutes a few times a week will suffice. Except I don't actually believe that to be true.

I always feel good after HIIT cardio, regardless of how hard I've pedaled. It varies, as can be seen in the differing mileage. Some days it's all I can do to get the speedometer up past 210 SPMs (strides per minute), and other days I can coast along at 230, panting the entire 60 seconds, of course. I'm probably some sort of endorphin junkie, but the not type that gets off on hair-raising stunts. That would be adrenaline, and most probably makes me queasy. I haven't noticed my lungs burning, but that's more likely to occur during kickboxing. That'll be next week, a regular full 5 days. I've tried to cut back my workouts, but always wind up gravitating back to doing a full 5 days. Yep, gym junkie.

I knock out 20 hammer grip pull ups and then do push ups and core in the class room. I see one of the staff setting up for a class that'll start in 15 minutes. Plenty of time for me to complete crunches, bicycles and a few planks. Back to the gym proper to clamber up the Step Mill. Hollywood greets me as she's on the other machine. But she's only on for 3 minutes, then down to the Seated Cable Row. Then back to the Step Mill. I've never seen this type of super set before, and it doesn't make any sense to me. Like a lot of people who climb the Step Mill, she's draped over the handles. This position detracts from the work your glutes, quads and core should be doing, but I'm not about to correct anyone. It's just that I'd never do that.

I see Nice Goatee who I am renaming Angry Goatee. He always looks like he's impatiently waiting on someone to show up. I see Hollywood chatting with a few other guys. She's very friendly, but unlike B, she doesn't spend a good 20 minutes standing around gabbing. Lazy Pedals and M are benching. I see a lot of regulars, but not Snow Bird (he's probably gone to Florida for a few weeks) or the Gym Rat couple. I don't see Ballet either, although Maroon and Hoodie are back. There are a lot of new faces, mostly older men with serious weight issues. Another set of pull ups for me. Then I have to decide between the Expresso Bike or the Octane. There's someone on the bike I usually ride, but both Octanes are empty. I like the one closest to the dead kickboxing machine. The other one is adjacent to the arm bicycle, and that machine gets lots of use. I don't like to be crowded.

I'm wearing speckle-patterned crop leggings, except on me they're closer to ankle pants, because I'm so much shorter than the average woman. If I move the leg bottoms 4-5 inches up, then they'd come mid-calf, which would be correct, but soooo uncomfortable. It doesn't show in photos, but I have reasonably large calves and I don't like tight clothes. I stopped wearing these a while ago because the waist is a bit loose and the iPod wouldn't stay on the waistband. Now that I use Bluetooth earbuds, and keep the iPod in my gear bag, there's no issue. Except I look funny. Yeah, whatever.

I've paired them with my other clown shoes... which are fairly comfy given that they're a good half size or more too big. They have white soles like my cheap Avia shoes. And like those shoes, they are slippery and offer no traction, regardless of the nice grid pattern. On the wood floor in the classroom, I had to contract my core to keep myself from sliding onto my face while doing push ups. It certainly made the push ups more difficult. On the elliptical during HIIT cardio, my feet kept sliding up the pedals, which was distracting. Ugh. Maybe they'll be better if I wear them outdoors and rough them up a bit?

At my third set of pull ups, I look up at the roof of the stretch cage and see a face peering back at me from the treadmill directly in front of the cage, on the cardio platform. He must be really tall if he can peer over the treadmill monitor. He's completely cloaked in a huge hoodie and seems to be amused. Maybe he's just watching the TV screen on the monitor? Of course, he looks totally surprised when my head pops up over the cage roof as I do pull ups. By the time I get to 20 though, I can barely get my chin up to the bar, much less past it.

The lying leg curl is occupied so I put my hoodie back on and do Walking Lunges. By the time I'm done, the machine is empty. Yaaay me! Last week I started at 20 lbs, moved up to 25, then back down to 20. This week I'm determined to get two sets at 25. And I do. It makes me feel like a Bad Ass. I really want to do another set of pull ups but decide to wait until after some stretching. The stretch area is crowded because there's another class in session so people who would normally stretch there are here. And a girl who should be doing her solid BB squats out on the gym floor proper is doing them in the stretch area as well. I don't know why. Most people want the mirror to check their form, and there's no mirror in the stretch area. I hate it when people who should be in the free weight area decided they'd rather hide in the stretch area, but bring all their equipment with them. It's not that big a space! I feel like shouting Get Out! at them, but of course, I don't say anything.

Luckily I have my spot on the floor before the class lets out and a swarm of women descend into this tiny area to do planks and stretches. Little R tries to tiptoe through the bodies to retrieve a black mat to do planks elsewhere in the gym. I have my tunes on loud so I don't hear the banter but I can tell that some of the women are teasing him. As the women leave, I look around. The big guy in the hoodie is doing curls of some sort. Except he's not wearing the hoodie anymore. I can see what looks like a simplified Celtic cross on his left shoulder blade. He has really nice arms, and he's big and young.

I don't feel done yet even though I've gone through all of the Mat stretches. Just one more set of pull ups. I worry that I've overestimated my abilities and that I won't be able to finish the set. But I do. Now I'm done. Four sets and I feel awesome, almost invincible. I've also sucked down m entire water bottle, which was only 20 oz. Normally I try to pace myself, but with this runny nose and scratchy throat, I've needed more fluids than usual. A woman in the locker room who I recognize as a regular offers me a cold, unopened bottle of water. "I have a whole case in my car," she says when I hesitate. Wow, thanks!

I've been happier lately, but I can't attribute it to regular workouts. Instead, I realize that my mood darkens tremendously when I forget to dab a bit (as in a pinkie tip) of estriol cream on my wrists. Being close to 59 years old, I'm in menopause. No hot flashes or night sweats, but I did suffer from low energy, brain fog and depression. A friend told me about an online company (click here for the link) that sells an estriol cream when I complained about the horrible side-effects of the topical my Ob/Gyn prescribed for me. There's an interesting article stating that estriol had been considered a weak, non-essential estrogen hormone, but is considered very safe and effective when applied through the skin. Click here to read it. All I know is that I feel more like a capable human being when I remember to apply it a few times a week, and when I don't, I'm bleak.

Give and Take

My left hip, which normally never causes me any concern, has been sporadically painful for the past two days. I can't quite figure out what the problem is, either because it's not any one particular movement. Most likely, I've managed to trap a nerve or tendon awkwardly in the front hip joint where the hip flexor attaches to the front quad. It only bothers me when I angle sharply around a corner, or make a slight twist in my gait. But then it really hurts!

Sleeping helped a little, but since I was mostly inactive yesterday and it's still an issue today, well, I was going to the gym anyway. Sometimes exercise is the cure. I suspect my flexibility at the Cage might've exacerbated an unknown joint condition so today I do rudimentary stretches. At first the hip complained about the cross-trainer, but I settled into a pace that was comfortable. Today my mileage is well under 7, but over 5. I'm happy enough with that. I'm lighter than I expect, as well, especially in light of eating pizza, cold cuts and drinking peach moscato wine over the weekend. The gym scale reads 110.6 lbs. I was expecting over 112. Hmmm. Wine has less calories than beer although I usually drink apple ale or hard cider. And I'm sure moscato has a ton of sugar in it.

Abs are apparently being worked hard!
My body seems able to adapt to this in stride and surprises me when I'm able to knock out 80 reps for my last set of regular push ups! Didn't see that coming. Seriously. I"m moving really fast thought, so I"m sure Drill Sergeants would call me out on my form and make me do them over. Just saying. I'm also able to add 3 reps to each set of hammer grip pull ups. That's like adding a whole 'nother set of pull ups! What bothers me still during pull ups aren't my elbows or hands, but my abs! There's an unpleasant sharp pain from just under my rib cage, just right of center that lingers long afterwards. As a matter of fact, it's the only sore part of me as I'm typing this. I even curled my knees into my chest during the last set of pull ups to see if that would make it easier, but it didn't. Oh well.

I"m sure planks aren't helping any. I do my 3 sets of 2 minute plus planks, ending with side planks. I do them with both my arms fully extended because elbow planks really bother my shoulders. I'm having trouble with placing my feet. It's harder to balance when your feet are stacked atop each other, so I just place one foot in front of the other on the ground. In scanning the web for images of planks, I see variations that call for the top leg extended. I think I might try that for 15 to 30 seconds on each side of a 2-minute plank. Not only does it look goofy, it could be fun.
This could be fun to try!

I've heard back from the Nexersys people on FB about how to deactivate the Punching Too Hard warning. It's another option listed under Settings in the User Profile. Excellent! I'm hoping the hip will be better tomorrow. Because I'm still going to whack that machine, and give the Advanced Level a go. It'll probably whoop my butt, but that's just another challenge. Wednesday I'll have my son in tow so it'll be an abbreviated workout. And I haven't decided whether I'll attempt working out after having SLT performed on my left eye. I'm just gonna wing it.

Squeaky Wheels

Today's Selfie
My grandmother used to tell me that the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Then my mother would counter with her father's admonition, an empty tin can makes the most noise. I'm hoping to be the former, not the latter. Searching online for a solution to the SouthPaw issue on the Nexersys, I came across the Nexersys FaceBook page. The company is introducing a new speed bag product which seems interesting but not very practical for a commercial gym. At least the FB page has walls related to their other products, and I post my question there. A few hours later, I actually get a response instructing me how to fix the issue!

When I get to the gym this morning, I immediately log in to my profile on the Nexersys and select Settings. There are options that can be clicked on, including Do Not Change My Stance. I also note that the machine has me listed as Gender Indeterminate, with blanks for Age and Weight. I wonder how the machine is going to behave now that I've updated my profile. I was already hitting too hard. Now it thinks I'm smaller and older than the average user. Is the machine totally going to freak when I do 3 rounds Beginner Level next Tuesday? I guess I'll find out!

Today I have on my new Ryka shoes. Now that I've threaded the laces through the last eyelets on the shoes, the laces are a reasonable length. My right heel also no longer wants to slip out. However, my right foot goes numb in the toes 15 minutes into the first cardio session. Just can't quite win.

I'm slow to adopt new social media technologies. Am I showing my age by being stubborn? I can't see the point to Twitter because I don't want to know what half the world is thinking at any given time. I don't have time for all this nonsense. And there's no reason for them to know my every mutterance or banal thought. However, I use FB to keep tract of friends, and to contact local companies. It works surprisingly well.

Today is a Cardio, Core and Everything Else Day. I do 30 minutes on the LifeFitness cross-trainer and get distracted by the TV because Kelly has Anderson Cooper as a guest co-host. And he's funny. My first set of pull ups is always a bit creaky. But not as bad as the set that follows all those push ups and planks. I keep my push up routine the same, but try to remember the plank variations I want to try today. Bird Dog is getting easier. Side Planks are a bit tough because I'm not quite sure where to put my feet. I save the Knee to Opposite Elbow planks for last, and toss in a few Camel and Cat lower back stretches between sets.

This 2nd set of pull ups is always the hardest because not only am I a bit breathless, but my abs and core are tired now. As I pull up, trying to keep my body straight and not swaying, I feel a twinge in the center of my stomach, just under the rib cage. Abs. Thank goodness doing the elliptical doesn't require any core work other than holding myself upright! I punch in Intervals for 30 minutes.

I use my hoodie to blot the sweat off my face and arms when I'm done. Time for another set of pull ups. These are easier. Whew! People seem to freak a little when I stretch at the Cage, probably because I can get my leg up over my head. But they could too, if they worked at it. People complain that they're not flexible, that they wish they could do that. But they don't make the attempt. Just as well that I'm plugged into my tunes and can't hear them. What I can hear is The Mayor. Honestly, I don't know why he talks so loud, or why he feels compelled to talk so much.

After a few Pistol Squats and most of a good Mat Stretch, I go back to the Cage for one more set of pull ups. The first 8 are always easier than the last 4. Then as I'm hanging there, debating how I feel, I do 3 more from the fully extended position. I don't normally fully extend my arms because it's hard on my elbows, but since these are the last reps before the weekend, I figure I'm safe. Yaaay!

My son has set up a play date with another child he rides the school bus with. He's going to get off the bus at that child's house, then call me when he wants to come home. I'm a bit nervous since this is a new thing, but I realize he's growing up and becoming more independent. Next year he'll be at the middle school. And I should probably get a job. And probably spend a lot less time working out, and writing about it.

Friday Workout

NSAIDs Are Making Me Fat

Yesterday I stopped taking the daily dose of NSAIDs that I've been using to tolerate the discomfort from my sciatica. For weeks my sciat...
