Cardio With Less Plus

Left to my own devices, I'll stay up all night working on things and then sleep until late morning. I had a Troop newsletter to write and find photos for before I could go to bed, which meant 3 a.m. At least I got to the gym today although it was much later than I'd prefer. The upside of coming in later is that the gym is fairly empty and I have access to my equipment of choice.

I'm too tired to even think about 4x4s because that involves remembering how much time is spent on each section. Instead, I do Program 3 for 30 minutes on the elliptical, plus a 5-minute cool-down. Because the morning class was over an hour ago, I have use of the classroom for pushups and core. I just have to remember to brace my abs to keep my feet from sliding on the wood floor since I'm wearing my oversized, very soft and comfy Skechers with the slippery white soles. It's also very humid and sweat is constantly dripping off my nose.

Pull-ups are easy enough until I hit 20, then the elbow starts to whine. The StepMill is also easy even if my face turns pink and sweat is bouncing off my tank and pants as it drops onto the steps below. I can see some regulars in the free weight area. Creepy PJ Pants is leering at a young woman in leggings and a tank. She's the only other person I've ever seen stand up on the seat of the Lat Pull Down station to grab the bar handle. She must be short like me.

Another set of pull-ups, just a few more than before. I'm so happy that I'm almost done. On the cross-trainer, my stomach starts to growl. Ugh. Hungry! Thank goodness I've got a 30 gm protein RTD in my car (in an insulated bag with a cooler pack). Ensure brand has finally delivered a mild mixed-berry flavor beverage that isn't Nesquick Strawberry sweet. So much tastier than Muscle Milk. And so much more convenient than going home to mix up a shake. Because I get easily distracted.

My legs are tired, especially the quads so I'm torn between really pushing hard and just taking an easy 15 minutes on the cross-trainer. What I do concede is that my legs are too tired for Walking Lunges and the 2:1 Lying Leg Curl. Besides, it's already early afternoon and I have other things to do! One more set of pull-ups, and one more set of pushups. The pink hue to my arms seems to be fading into brown. In the shower, I realize that I'm also starting to peel. Ugh. Well, it's not like I didn't know this would happen. I've ordered a zip-up rashguard from Land's End (50% off sale) for next year's trip. That should solve the problems of both sunburn and suffocating collars.

Every Day Feels Like Monday

Adhering to a traditional 3-day-a-week, aka Monday Wednesday Friday, workout schedule is having unintended consequences. But since this is "new" to me, perhaps I'll be able to adapt without feeling as if every gym day is Monday. Yep, when I take Tuesday and Thursday off, the following Wednesday and Friday feel like I've just gotten up after a long weekend hibernating. I feel much better if I've been to the gym the day before so recovery time has nothing to do with it. However, weird as it sounds, it's not uncommon. There are countless message boards filled with discussions of the same phenomenon.

My favorite suggestion is that fatigue is caused by the body being in a deeper stage of recovery, only noticeable after a rest day. A lot of athletes agree that spending a rest day doing nothing actually makes everything feel worse. Light exercise that warms the body up and gets the blood moving seems to be the most beneficial. I like to think this aids in flushing the muscles of the protons that cause acidosis (that burning sensation in your muscles) and increases blood flow to provide nutrients and oxygen critical to complete cellular repair.

My least favorite advice states that discomfort is caused by inflammation, so that should be eliminated by whatever means necessary. Personally, unless you're in so much pain that you can't walk, you should work through it. A little discomfort is no reason to go running for the ibuprofen, which appears to inhibit muscle repair and growth. There's also no research that's shown ice baths (aka cold water immersion or CWI) to work, although I do take a cold rinse after a moderately hot shower. But that's mostly so I don't start sweating again once I'm clean.

Although it seems counterintuitive to have a hard time adjusting to fewer workouts, I know my elbows feel better today. The one stretch that works for me doesn't appear on any of the "fix your tendonitis" sites. Instead, I straighten my arm out in front of me, angled about 30 degrees from my center, shoulder height, bend my wrist up and open my hand wide with the palm facing away from me as if I'm stopping a force field. The wider I spread my fingers, the more I feel the medial epicondylitis at the bottom of my elbow. I close my hand to make a fist, then open the fingers wide again and repeat this motion three or four times.

A few hours after my workout, I can honestly say that I'm really tired and could use a good nap. I am surprised that I'm not sore after Wednesday's push-up madness. What I felt was an odd fatigue, but only in the shoulders and chest when I did push-ups as part of my core routine. And I didn't feel the fatigue for the second set later in the session. Weird, right?

I'm also able to do pull-ups without too much elbow distress. Walking Lunges causes me momentary discomfort in my quads just as I finish walk lunging the length of the gym. Lying Leg Curls are always hard and I'm still conflicted about whether this exercise is affecting my IOPs (intraocular pressures). It's hard for me to know and the literature is vague, only mentioning the risk of the Vasalva maneuver, essentially holding your breath to complete a lift. I'm going to be so bummed if it turns out that I have to quit lifting...

What Works For Me Might Not Work For You

I tried the yoga-based golfer's elbow "cure" yesterday. It's the stretch I referenced two days ago in my last post. Basically, you place both arms in front of your hips with hands facing out, but you do this while lying on your face. The pressure of your hips gently stretches the forearms. You can make this more difficult by raising one leg for a ten-count. It seems to work for some people. However, when I tried this position, I didn't really get a stretch in my forearms. What I got was a lot of discomfort in my right wrist from my hip bone pressing on it. So this isn't a stretch that will work for me. But it might work for you.

Today is my second cardio-intensive day. My thighs feel like logs as I pedal on the elliptical for the HIIT cardio I always begin with. I almost came to the gym yesterday to play with the Nexersys, but I find that when I work out for 5 days straight, I tend to wear down my immune system and I get sick. A vaguely scratchy throat told me to take a rest day. But I don't feel rested today, at least not at the beginning of my workout. Of course, by the end of the session, I'm pumped and hopping around ready to dance.

Limiting Your Ambitions

Sometimes the mind is willing but the body is unable. That's quite different than having an able body thwarted by mental obstacles. I admit that I have doubts and fears. But I am more confident at the gym than I am anywhere else. I guess that's why I'm a gym rat. As an older athlete, I have less issue with motivation (I've been doing this too long to succumb to excuses) than I do with actual physical limitations. I'm not talking about the various and sundry aches and pains. I'm not talking about coughs and sneezes. I'm talking about tendinitis.

Even when I'm not at the gym, elbow pain will stop me abruptly from a mundane task, like hoisting a bag over my shoulder. It's a repetitive motion type of injury, involving micro-tears to the muscles connecting the humerus to the ulna. Muscles don't connect directly to bones but by tendons. When those tendons are damaged, they become inflamed and can compress the ulnar nerve (your funny bone).

My tendinitis hasn't become acute or chronic yet. But I've suffered such in the past when I wore tennis/golf elbow braces dutifully every time I worked out. They didn't really do anything. Standard treatment calls for rest, ice and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen. However, that does nothing to correct the problem, and ibuprofen, while a potent anti-inflammatory, is counterindicated for strength-training. Standard treatment also does not allow you to return to the activity that probably caused the problem in the first place.

So, while I'd like to knock out 5 sets of 20+ hammer grip pull-ups in a single workout session, I won't. Because my elbows can't handle the stress. I've pulled back from increasing my reps past 22-23 exactly for the same reason. I can get to 28, but my elbows suffer so much damage and pain that it's not worth it. My concession is to do fewer reps, but more than one set. Today is a Cardio Day, which in my book, includes core, pushups, and pull-ups. Because my right elbow has been intermittently sensitive, I only do two sets of pull-ups but add another set of pushups. I'll attempt 3 sets of pull-ups on Friday. Depending on how my elbows feel, of course.

Online, there are a lot of purported experts claiming to know how to fix your golfer's elbow. But because everyone is different, not everyone will respond to the same treatment the same way. Most treatments include stretching and some also advise foam rolling or massaging down the forearm. The most common type of stretch involves holding your arm straight out in front of you, with palm facing up, then tip your fingers downward which will stretch the inside of the forearm. What we all want to avoid is surgery. And steroid injections.

The most innovative technique involves a position derived from yoga. I found it on a climber's blog. Click here to visit the site and read how to perform the move. While I've not actually attempted this yet in my house (got to find a clear spot on the floor that's not covered with Boy Scout camping gear), I might give it a go at the gym tomorrow.

The other recommendation is, of course, to strengthen all the muscles affected by this tendinitis, i.e., forearms and hands. I do Reverse Grip BB Curls once a week. I suppose I could add wrist curls but I've never found them to be effective for strengthening forearms. I worry that I'll just be adding more stress to my repetitive stress injury.

I felt my glutes while doing HIIT cardio this morning, so yesterday's Smith RDLs must've done something. My timing was off on all my cardio events today (not nearly as many points as last week during the Dragon Island game on the Expresso bike). I did notice though, that only the Precor elliptical gives me crazy pulse rate readings (today a low of 80 to a high just shy of 190), while other machines like the cross-trainer, the StepMill, and the Octane show me a steadier, more reasonable heart rate. Maybe it's not me. Maybe it's the equipment.

Connecting the Dots

Winter Storm Evan was a bust yesterday so there was no school delay because a quarter inch of powder isn't even worth salting the roadways up here. I skipped the gym anyway and got a lot of stuff done, but not as much as I wanted. That always happens. I have to work on my time management skills!

Today, fifteen minutes before my alarm was set to go off, the phone rings. Caller ID says it's the school district. What? They've just announced a two-hour delay. I look out the window and realize that it's snowing hard. Ugh. Well, at least I get to sleep in for another two hours before going out to assess the situation. It's 22F so the snow is heavy powder, only an inch deep but enough that I don't want to pack it down underfoot or under tire. Packed snow becomes ice and that will last for months! I grab my broom and sweep the snow off the steps, walkway, from around my car, clear my windshield and then sweep the driveway. It takes a bit over 30 minutes to get everything clear, just in time for me to wake my son for school. I don't ask him to help me on school days because I know he'd be really upset at going to class sweaty and dirty. And since I'm headed to the gym after I drop him at school, I don't care how hot and messy I get. I just count it towards my warmup.

I've planned to do HIIT cardio, several sets of pull-ups, some core and whatever two cardio machines aren't occupied. I've done the Norwegian 4x4 program countless times, but today I suddenly make the direct connection between my weird pulse rate and Raynaud's syndrome. Raynaud's is where the blood vessels of the extremities succumb to stress by contracting in spasms. It leads to numbness, tingling, and a sensation of icy cold fingers and toes. The stress can be physical pressure (online medical literature only says emotional stress but I think they're wrong because 90% of primary Raynaud sufferers are women and most if not all of the research has been done by men and yes, I'm being totally serious -- look at how women's pain is underestimated) or an extreme temperature change.

In my HIIT cardio program, I pedal for 5 minutes at a leisurely pace, then go as fast as I can for 60 seconds, then drop down to 75-80% of maximum for 3 more minutes before 3 minutes of slow pedaling akin to a jog. Repeat the 1 minute fast as possible / 3 minutes pretty fast / 3 minutes slow for 3 more intervals.

During each peak, my pulse rate (reported by sensors in the handles) drops to its lowest point, then shoots back up as I slow my pedaling. I know that my feet are prone to numbness during this period because pedaling as fast as I can means I'm exerting a lot of pressure on my quads as well as the front of my feet, just as if I were running. Contracting blood vessels in my hands and feet might be impacting the reported pulse rate. I'm not sure if my pulse rate and heart rate are the same when my hands and toes go numb. I'd have to set up a dual-monitoring system to find out. When I look online, I don't see anything posted showing this is even a topic of interest. Because who else besides a gym rat like me would notice such an anomaly, right? And I'm one in a million. Kidding. Or not.

The literature on Raynaud's is incomplete. Or maybe I have a subset category of this syndrome since it's not emotional stress (as stated in online literature) but physical stress (like gripping too tightly) as well as extreme temperature that causes me numbness and pain. I personally would like to tie this to my skin disorder, or some connective tissue disorder since "poor circulation," i.e., collapsible veins runs in my mother's side of the family as well as ichthyosis vulgaris. Couple this with my (and my mother's) extreme discomfort with tight clothing (too much pressure on internal organs) and perhaps I'm making correlations where none exist? To paraphrase all the cop shows I've ever watched, I don't believe in coincidences.

What this all means is that it's vitally important to pay attention to your body when you work out. We're all different and our bodies don't handle the same stressors the same ways. And while it's critical to challenge yourself, it's equally important to know your body's limits. I know I have small, shallow joints that are overly flexible and prone to tendonitis. I've discovered that I can do 20 pull-ups without issue, but doing more causes my right elbow distress. However, throughout the course of a cardio workout, I can do several sets of 20 without incurring any pain. Seems counterintuitive that doing 4 sets of 20, totaling 80, is less damaging than doing a set of 25.

Know your limits. Then you can work around them.

Making My Routine More Exciting

There's nothing more exciting than the unexpected. This can be good or bad, it all depends on your perspective. Due to the Holidays, this workout week is only 3 days long, and I like to put HIIT cardio in at least twice. Which means that today, a Cardio Day, will also have 33 minutes of HIIT on the elliptical, and two other cardio machines, depending on availability. For no apparent reason, I've decided that an hour of cardio is appropriate for Cardio Day. Health researchers always try to report the minimum amount of time and effort the average person needs to exert to reap the benefits of exercise, probably because only extremists would go further. I've read that 20 minutes a few times a week will suffice. Except I don't actually believe that to be true.

I always feel good after HIIT cardio, regardless of how hard I've pedaled. It varies, as can be seen in the differing mileage. Some days it's all I can do to get the speedometer up past 210 SPMs (strides per minute), and other days I can coast along at 230, panting the entire 60 seconds, of course. I'm probably some sort of endorphin junkie, but the not type that gets off on hair-raising stunts. That would be adrenaline, and most probably makes me queasy. I haven't noticed my lungs burning, but that's more likely to occur during kickboxing. That'll be next week, a regular full 5 days. I've tried to cut back my workouts, but always wind up gravitating back to doing a full 5 days. Yep, gym junkie.

I knock out 20 hammer grip pull ups and then do push ups and core in the class room. I see one of the staff setting up for a class that'll start in 15 minutes. Plenty of time for me to complete crunches, bicycles and a few planks. Back to the gym proper to clamber up the Step Mill. Hollywood greets me as she's on the other machine. But she's only on for 3 minutes, then down to the Seated Cable Row. Then back to the Step Mill. I've never seen this type of super set before, and it doesn't make any sense to me. Like a lot of people who climb the Step Mill, she's draped over the handles. This position detracts from the work your glutes, quads and core should be doing, but I'm not about to correct anyone. It's just that I'd never do that.

I see Nice Goatee who I am renaming Angry Goatee. He always looks like he's impatiently waiting on someone to show up. I see Hollywood chatting with a few other guys. She's very friendly, but unlike B, she doesn't spend a good 20 minutes standing around gabbing. Lazy Pedals and M are benching. I see a lot of regulars, but not Snow Bird (he's probably gone to Florida for a few weeks) or the Gym Rat couple. I don't see Ballet either, although Maroon and Hoodie are back. There are a lot of new faces, mostly older men with serious weight issues. Another set of pull ups for me. Then I have to decide between the Expresso Bike or the Octane. There's someone on the bike I usually ride, but both Octanes are empty. I like the one closest to the dead kickboxing machine. The other one is adjacent to the arm bicycle, and that machine gets lots of use. I don't like to be crowded.

I'm wearing speckle-patterned crop leggings, except on me they're closer to ankle pants, because I'm so much shorter than the average woman. If I move the leg bottoms 4-5 inches up, then they'd come mid-calf, which would be correct, but soooo uncomfortable. It doesn't show in photos, but I have reasonably large calves and I don't like tight clothes. I stopped wearing these a while ago because the waist is a bit loose and the iPod wouldn't stay on the waistband. Now that I use Bluetooth earbuds, and keep the iPod in my gear bag, there's no issue. Except I look funny. Yeah, whatever.

I've paired them with my other clown shoes... which are fairly comfy given that they're a good half size or more too big. They have white soles like my cheap Avia shoes. And like those shoes, they are slippery and offer no traction, regardless of the nice grid pattern. On the wood floor in the classroom, I had to contract my core to keep myself from sliding onto my face while doing push ups. It certainly made the push ups more difficult. On the elliptical during HIIT cardio, my feet kept sliding up the pedals, which was distracting. Ugh. Maybe they'll be better if I wear them outdoors and rough them up a bit?

At my third set of pull ups, I look up at the roof of the stretch cage and see a face peering back at me from the treadmill directly in front of the cage, on the cardio platform. He must be really tall if he can peer over the treadmill monitor. He's completely cloaked in a huge hoodie and seems to be amused. Maybe he's just watching the TV screen on the monitor? Of course, he looks totally surprised when my head pops up over the cage roof as I do pull ups. By the time I get to 20 though, I can barely get my chin up to the bar, much less past it.

The lying leg curl is occupied so I put my hoodie back on and do Walking Lunges. By the time I'm done, the machine is empty. Yaaay me! Last week I started at 20 lbs, moved up to 25, then back down to 20. This week I'm determined to get two sets at 25. And I do. It makes me feel like a Bad Ass. I really want to do another set of pull ups but decide to wait until after some stretching. The stretch area is crowded because there's another class in session so people who would normally stretch there are here. And a girl who should be doing her solid BB squats out on the gym floor proper is doing them in the stretch area as well. I don't know why. Most people want the mirror to check their form, and there's no mirror in the stretch area. I hate it when people who should be in the free weight area decided they'd rather hide in the stretch area, but bring all their equipment with them. It's not that big a space! I feel like shouting Get Out! at them, but of course, I don't say anything.

Luckily I have my spot on the floor before the class lets out and a swarm of women descend into this tiny area to do planks and stretches. Little R tries to tiptoe through the bodies to retrieve a black mat to do planks elsewhere in the gym. I have my tunes on loud so I don't hear the banter but I can tell that some of the women are teasing him. As the women leave, I look around. The big guy in the hoodie is doing curls of some sort. Except he's not wearing the hoodie anymore. I can see what looks like a simplified Celtic cross on his left shoulder blade. He has really nice arms, and he's big and young.

I don't feel done yet even though I've gone through all of the Mat stretches. Just one more set of pull ups. I worry that I've overestimated my abilities and that I won't be able to finish the set. But I do. Now I'm done. Four sets and I feel awesome, almost invincible. I've also sucked down m entire water bottle, which was only 20 oz. Normally I try to pace myself, but with this runny nose and scratchy throat, I've needed more fluids than usual. A woman in the locker room who I recognize as a regular offers me a cold, unopened bottle of water. "I have a whole case in my car," she says when I hesitate. Wow, thanks!

I've been happier lately, but I can't attribute it to regular workouts. Instead, I realize that my mood darkens tremendously when I forget to dab a bit (as in a pinkie tip) of estriol cream on my wrists. Being close to 59 years old, I'm in menopause. No hot flashes or night sweats, but I did suffer from low energy, brain fog and depression. A friend told me about an online company (click here for the link) that sells an estriol cream when I complained about the horrible side-effects of the topical my Ob/Gyn prescribed for me. There's an interesting article stating that estriol had been considered a weak, non-essential estrogen hormone, but is considered very safe and effective when applied through the skin. Click here to read it. All I know is that I feel more like a capable human being when I remember to apply it a few times a week, and when I don't, I'm bleak.

NSAIDs Are Making Me Fat

Yesterday I stopped taking the daily dose of NSAIDs that I've been using to tolerate the discomfort from my sciatica. For weeks my sciat...
