Humpty Dumpty Day

Neither my son nor myself felt particularly energetic when we got to the gym Wednesday afternoon. I'd already spent half the morning cleaning up the dog, and the kitchen. It's not his fault his bowels have been upset. Again, he'd been wearing a full diaper (as opposed to an incontinence wrap) so he he was doubly messy. I don't think it's the food. What I suspect, but I'm not willing to drag the poor pup off to the vet to confirm, is that not only is he losing muscle control in his nether regions, but perhaps he's got internal lumps. That would explain why he starts to leak as he's eating, with the stomach pressing against his bladder, sort of like what it was like when I was pregnant with my son.

I'm going through a lot of newspapers on the floor, and a lot of pet-friendly wipes. The Earth Bath brand smell the nicest but they're expensive. The cheaper Nature's Miracle brand doesn't smell as good, and consequently, the pup doesn't smell as good. Actual baby wipes are cheaper yet, but I'm not really sure how canine-safe they are since dogs seem to be sensitive to things we humans take for granted as being edible, like coffee, chocolate and macadamia nuts.

A friend recommends trying CBD oil. Online literature suggests that it can soothe pain, increase appetite and ameliorate pancreatic and liver issues. Sounds a bit like snake oil. Because it's derived from hemp, there's no danger of the pup getting high. He's already dazed and confused as it is, no doubt having canine senior moments. Of course, traditional vets can't make any recommendations for alternative treatments since there's not enough published, hard-science testing. Everything is anecdotal. Nor are there standards for quality of oils available. How do you know you're actually getting what you ordered?

On the other hand, I don't see my pup recovering from these age-related indignities. He's becoming more agitated. Today he wouldn't eat, vomited bile from not eating, and again had a few accidents in the house. I'm definitely going to look into the CBD oil, because I don't think it will make the dog worse, and it might make him more comfortable. I know this is probably his last summer.

At the gym, we decide to do the Octane cardio machine first, and then the recumbent bike. I'm having trouble with my wired headphones. We're both hot and sweaty when we approach the Stretch Cage. My son has a better-and-yet-worse pull up form than I do, but I only know this because I shot a video of him (I tried to post the video but it wouldn't upload properly) to show him his one leg forward position. Then he used my phone to do one for me. I can see that my movement is still very limited. My son has better range with a fuller extension. I'll have to work on my form on Friday!

Our arms are tired so we agree to only do a set of push ups before hitting the weights. Core can wait until we're ready to stretch at the end of our workout! The Smith machine is still noisy but somehow the glide is smoother. Maybe someone squirted a bit of WD-40 into the tracts? We get to 80 lbs when my son decides he's had enough. His arms are tired. I add weight and do a set at 120, then another set at 140. My son asks me "Why?" I can't just say "Because" so I give him the full explanation of what it's like to get older and not be in shape. He sort of already knows this, but I tell him that I want to live to be old, but not crippled or frail, and especially not losing my mind. I tell him I want to be one of those "pain in the butt" seniors, sharp as a tack and able to take care of myself. He nods because we both remember how his paternal grandparents declined both mentally and physically.

I almost forget to do BB rows. My son does them overhand, first with gloves then without. He hasn't quite decided whether he likes them or not. I do mine underhand to work biceps with the back. The overhand mostly stresses my son's forearms. Sometimes I can't believe he's only 13. True, he hasn't reached his full height yet, but structurally, he's got very sturdy proportions. I'm extremely happy he's not cursed with the Southeast Asian body type: long torso and short limbs.

My son excuses himself to use the bathroom so I take this opportunity to find a neutral grip handle for the lat pull down station. Unfortunately, the handle I choose has rubber grips that seem sticky. I spray them and wipe them off, but that only helps a little. My son would rather use the regular bar but I tell him we're using this one. I need him to slow down. Well, at least this handle has a set hand width. We also do Seated Cable Rows. I know he can move more weight, once his forearms catch up. Because it's always his forearms that get tired.

We have a lot of trouble doing Side Planks in the classroom, mostly because we're tired and it takes a bit of effort to maintain the odd position. Behind us, two men are doing walking lunges with BBs on their shoulders while talking loudly. Well, they're probably speaking in a normal tone, but the class is empty and echos. And it's really only one guy doing walking lunges across the room, because his buddy is merely stepping forward, then stepping back.

Bird Dogs are somewhat easier, but still a bit of a challenge. It's a relief to lay down and do Bicycles and Crunches! My son's hip stretches are getting a tiny bit better, but he's definitely lost the flexibility he had as a 5 year old. His warts also seem to be spreading, although he concedes that some seem to be insect bites because not only are they smaller, they itch. Molluscum contagiosum doesn't itch. If anything, my son seems addicted to using hand sanitizer these days, just so as not to spread the warts any further. Sometimes, a little OCD is a good thing.

Post Niko

Winter Storm Niko brought arctic temps along with the bonanza of fluffy snow. It's not hard to shovel, but there's a lot of it. It's so cold though that after shoveling a good 8 x 10 spot for our secondary parking, I haven't busted a sweat even though I'm wearing a fleece hat and winter parka. Temps should rise into the 40s tomorrow, but only areas with patches of visible ground will absorb any heat. Everything else will stay frozen and white. Tonight's suppose to be a lunar eclipse, but true to form, the sky is overcast and gray. It had been blazingly sunny all day! Now, not a star, planet or the moon in sight anywhere! The news states there's more snow and/or rain and/or sleet on the way. Oh yaaay. Kidding.

My right shoulder and hips don't appreciate shoveling. The lungs are getting a good workout though. I drove my son to the school bus stop because our road is slippery with slush this morning. And then I went to the gym. It's only partially full, probably because not only is it Friday, but lots of folks are still shoveling their way out of their driveways. We've had worse snow. And more frequently. Before my hubs and I were married, we spent quite a few winters shoveling snow out of the driveway until the side banks were too high to see over. This isn't even remotely as bad.

The gym is also really cold today so I don't feel very warm after 10 minutes on the elliptical. There's an old guy boxing at the good Nexersys and I'm not going to bother with the other machine because it reverts to SouthPaw unless you log in, and it's impossible to log in because the keyboard is funky. Funky as in you press the W key once and it shows up as WWWWW. Then you hit Backspace and maybe you lose 2 or 3 Ws, or maybe all of them. Ugh. So not worth it. Only by logging in can you turn off all the alarms that stop the machine and tell you that you're hitting too hard. And only by logging in can you prevent the machine from reverting to southpaw stance. The gym owner doesn't care because he doesn't actually log in. He just runs the Spar program in Default mode.

I only do a mild stretch at the Cage because I'm not really warmed up. And then I suck it up and do some pull ups. I'm always so relieved when I make it past 31 reps. The old guy is done, resting at the coffee bar. No one else is waiting. I take my time and affix the moleskin, tape, wraps and finally stuff my hands into my gloves. I'm cold. The machine is near the front door and even though it's a double door system, there's a chill from everyone entering and leaving. I go through all 5 Beginner rounds and never bust a sweat. It's only at the end of the Intermediate rounds that I feel warm. Finally! Temps have also risen outside. It was 17°F when I got to the gym, and closer to 28F by the time I leave. One of the Advance rounds goes a bit haywire, and I catch myself mumbling "Oh, fuckit" when I miss a complete 3-blow combination. None of the combinations are the ones listed beforehand. I don't even know why I bother prepping for each round.

I have to force myself to focus because I'm distracted by how moody I feel. I suspect it's a vitamin imbalance. I've been taking vitamin 250 mg of B-12 along with just 2 capsules of the Optic Nerve vitamin formula. Instructions are to take 4 capsules daily (no consideration given for how big you are so I'm taking the same dose as a 250 lb guy), but because the ON already contains B12, my urine starts to smell noticeably bad. So I skip my 250 mg tablet of B12, my pee smells normal but I don't feel as good. If anything, I feel sort of depressed and anxious, in spite of exercise. Ugh. I should probably take my own B12s again, but maybe cut back on the ON to 3 capsules?

I spend 20 minutes on the elliptical but I don't have the energy to pedal very fast. I'm barely sweating at the 15 min mark. Ugh. Not a great workout. I go to the Stretch Cage. WTH... I stretch and then pump myself up for pull ups. And I actually make it to 40. Yaaaay me! The last 5 aren't pretty, but I'm pretty sure I'm not kipping them either. Whew! I do a quick Mat stretch, note that my left inside quad still feels tight from an inflamed tendon. That's going to take a few weeks to heal up. Sigh. My shoulder's not better. Not worse either. Ugh.

Playing It By Feel

I'm feeling a bit run down this morning. It's most noticeable as a slight burning sensation in my lower eyelids. I'm not feverish, and I have no other symptoms except for how I feel. When I pick my son up from school later this afternoon, to take him to his kung fu class, he tells me that he doesn't feel well and his throat hurts. Once in the car, I use a flashlight, detect some redness at the back of his throat, and then call for an immediate appointment with his pediatrician. Yep, he's got strep. The front desk tells me that their morning was nothing but back to back cases of strep and flu. My son cheerfully tells them "Well, it is the season for it." I hope I don't have it too. I have a sore throat, but I'm attributing it to post-nasal drip. I'm sneezing a lot too. Yuck.

Still, I go to the gym and work out. Because if I stay home and rest, nothing changes. The cold doesn't get better. It just hangs out. If I work out, either the cold gets better, or it gets worse. Either way, something happens. I know this from experience. My body is good at hibernation, and that's helpful with this sort of upper respiratory infection.

Since I feel a bit run-down, I cut my warm up push ups to just 30 T-push ups. I skip the planks and just do some crunches. No benching. I did some yesterday. But I can do RG BB Rows today. I don't do 3 sets of heavy like last week though. I'll do that next week, because I'm assuming I'll be better then. I also test out, gingerly, Seated One-Arm Cable Rows. It's really more of a bicep exercise for me even though I make sure to extend my lat forward. I start with a palm-down grip and rotate as I pull back to my armpit, ending with my thumb facing up. It's that twisting motion that really helps with the biceps. And I always start with the "weak" arm first, which means Left, then Right. No delts today. I'm planning to whack the machine tomorrow and that is actually a very arm-and-shoulder-intensive workout.

I feel a little lighter. The gym scale has dropped me down from 112 to 109.6 lbs. I'm glad it's going in the right direction.

When Losing Count Is A Good Thing

My turkey balls simmering
I was mildly disappointed in the turkey meatballs I made last night. In spite of following the directions to a T, the meatballs seemed a bit bland. Even with an entire tablespoon of chopped garlic! I'm going to have to tweak this recipe because I prefer my own turkey meatballs... the ones with minced onions for texture that I pan-fry on the stove top.

I got up this morning not really feeling like a Gym Rat. Maybe it's the Spring post-nasal drip that's giving me a vaguely sore throat. Maybe it's the sudden drop in temp due to a brilliantly sunny arctic blast. But March is fraught with Early Dismissals and Spring Break, which means super abbreviated workouts, so I should get my full workouts in while I can.

My sciatica still aches at predictable moments, like when I'm driving, or worse, in the bathroom. I'm not killing myself doing cardio these days, so if I make over 6 miles, I'm good. My shoulders feel tired, which is my cue to do a slightly different routine today. I still do sets of pull ups, planks, and push ups. But I do some light Smith Incline Benching followed by light DB delt work. My reward is evident in the last set of pull ups, after my last 30 minutes on the elliptical. I lose track of my reps and am startled to suddenly find myself at 20. Then I do one more and drop down. Wow, that was easy!
Program 2 on the Precor always reminds me
of the Grand Tetons, or a pair of boobs...

I add a few light sets of DB Seated Shoulder Press even though they make my shoulders hurt at 20 lbs. The solution is to drop to 15 lbs so I can actually do a few sets. I still don't like this movement or any overhead pressing movement, but I'm careful to keep my reps and sets low. If I start to pump up, my right ear will feel congested from nerve impingement due to the overabundance of blood vessels in that area of my neck and shoulder. Not pleasant, and a little scary.

I try Tiger Push Ups one more time, and manage to get to 10, but I still don't think I'm doing them right. I don't feel them in my triceps like Diamond Push Ups. Instead, my front delts and core are getting killed. I'm not sure it's worth it. Tomorrow I'll probably try to pull heavier on the RG BB Row. But it all depends on how I feel.

Oh No, Not Again

The lyrics from Bowie's Ashes to Ashes run through my head when I pull my trainers out of my gym bag this morning. "Oh no, not again..."

Yep, I have two black gym shoes, but one is mesh and one is leather. One is an Asics and one is Ryka. Ugh. At least they're both black. I doubt if anyone will even notice because really, no one looks at anyone's feet unless there's a screaming neon reason to. I'm also hoping that the shoes aren't too different in height. My sciatica is still bothering me and I mostly feel it in the ball of my right foot, the outside ankle, up the outside of my calf and my butt. It's a persistent dull pain.

The cross-trainer has always bothered my right foot, usually the ball of my foot and a few toes go numb by the time 30 minutes is up. That foot also tends to slide a bit which says there's some sort of muscle weakness. I don't have this issue with the other foot. Doing hammer grip pull ups really bothers my sciatica when I cross my left ankle over my right as I pull up. I curl my knees up slightly to lessen the discomfort. After 20 reps, I drop to a full extension and do one more pull up. Now, sets of 21 reps have become the norm. Oh well... But it's very satisfying to feel the back do the work, not the arms. I worry my arms will get puny from lack of bicep curls. Kidding.

I have to shovel out the road drain on my property, and the alternate parking spot that's been walled in by the snow plow. So not looking forward to doing this. It's work. So I'm careful with how much I do at the gym. I want to maintain progress with my delts and lats so I'll continue with those routines. But I really have t stop "stress eating" over the weekend. My husband hasn't been home in nearly 3 weeks so what's my excuse? I do two sets of wide hand push ups and 3 sets of planks. Both make my right leg and butt hurt. When I look up from my last set of push ups, a pimply-faced twenty-something year old man is lounging on the the mat across from me. Ugh.

He's been watching me, and over my head phones, I can hear some thing like, "Good work." What? Is he talking to me? I look at him for a moment like he can't possibly be talking to me and then I turn away, because it just makes me mad. If I look at him I'll be tempted to blurt out a loud FU. Honestly. WTF? Who the hell is this fat kid to say anything at all to me? Maybe it's because he's a guy. Guys are such total idiots in the gym.

I do my DB lateral raises and up the reps slightly when I up the weights to the 25s. I see a lot of regulars, and some new faces. Hollywood is looking good with her shapely arms and mad housewife hair-do. The Mayor spends most of his workout holding court. I think he might get 3 sets in the entire hour and a half he's at the gym. But I guess that's all he needs to maintain his less than illustrious middle-age shape.

I pace the entire length of the gym looking for either a free mat to stretch out on, or a vacant elliptical. Finally one frees up and I do 30 minutes of Program #1. I like the Performance Programs because they automatically include level variations, and backward pedaling. My legs don't hurt doing this type of cardio. I skip most of the Mat Stretch and concentrate on the simple piriformis stretch. Then finish with another set of pull ups. Done!

I have to get some mini-cupcakes for my son to bring to school tomorrow. It'll be his birthday. And when I get home, I'll have to shovel snow again. At least it'll be warm at 37F. Winter Storm Jonas dumped about 8-10 inches on us, depending on where you stand. I've lived through a few snow storms, and this wasn't any blizzard. At least up here.

NSAIDs Are Making Me Fat

Yesterday I stopped taking the daily dose of NSAIDs that I've been using to tolerate the discomfort from my sciatica. For weeks my sciat...
