Progress is Sweet

A light I don't recognize comes on the dashboard of the car I've barely had for two months. It doesn't seem critical so I wait until I'm parked at the gym before consulting the manual. I've had to reference this tome more than with any other vehicle I've ever owned. Ah, it's a "tired pressure" indicator. I wish it would tell me which tire because when I step out of the car, they all look the same. I've packed a strappy summer dress to wear out of the gym, and that means I'm not going to be checking my own tire pressure. Instead, I'll take it to the local Valvoline because they've got machines to gauge tire pressure. And being guys, they're also willing to help someone like me, not that I play damsel in distress much. But automotive stuff is something I don't mind letting guys do for me.

It's different once I'm inside the gym. I do my 30 minute "warm up" on the cross-trainer, the good one that allows me to set the level to zero. My ponytail is getting too long, swinging wet and annoying. When I get to the Smith machine, I use barrettes to pin my hair up. Much better now. I know my legs and glutes are getting thicker, but my clothes still fit okay. Which means I can up the weight again for Split Leg Squats. I do 3 sets, because I can. Although my right knee starts to complain a little toward the end. I also add a few sets to the Smith SLDLs, but they're light. I'm less interested in pulling heavy here than in engaging the glutes and lower back in a different manner than split squats. The GHRs feel the same. I do all three sets and don't land on my face so I consider this a Win! Then back for cardio: 30 min of Intervals. I'm feeling pretty good even though I'm drenched. What makes me happy is that I've broken 7 miles today. Yaaaay!
Thick!

I do a few Pistol Squats at the beginning of my Mat Stretch. My towel is damp and smells vaguely like cheese. Eewe yuck! I always bring a fresh towel, so this is just me and common bacterial activity. Maroon is sporting huge arms today. He's a beefy guy but he seems to have gotten bigger. Ponytail isn't tossing his loaded bars around too much, probably because he's here with a girlfriend or sister, a very plump, kidney-bean-shaped woman who is pedaling on the elliptical next to me. The Mayor shows up late with a young skinny boy, maybe 15 yrs old, tall and blonde. His son? They go straight to DB OHPs. I don't understand why people don't warm up properly. At least he's not loud when he's "coaching" (t)his kid. I'm outta here until next week.Yaaaay!

Warming Up Is Suppose to Help

Pre-gym Morning Selfie
Yes, the Stretch Cage is gone for good. Bummer. Not only did I use it to stretch my legs and hips, but it was the only place I could use a Hammer Grip to do pull ups. Now there's no place that accommodates my tiny hands and fingers. Double bummer. The gym owner tells me that the stretch chairs are now positioned next to the recumbent bikes. It's a good place for them as far as I'm concerned because neither does anything for me. Seriously.

Today is Leg Day, and that's a good enough excuse for me to do 30 minutes of cardio on the Cross-trainer. Use it or lose it. I'm not able to make the same mileage anymore. Bummer. I am busting a sweat though, so that's reassuring. I wander down into the free weight area. Yellow balloons are tied to the three new pieces of equipment: a tricep machine, a chest press, and a power rack cage. The latter is situated right next to the Smith machine. Whew! I'm happy the Smith is still there, and apparently vacant, so I glom onto it for my Squats, One-Leg Split Squats and SLDLs.

Squats feel unusually heavy today, the weight painful on the base of my neck and upper back. Then I realize that the pad that's affixed to the bar is not the one I normally use so I pull it off and replace it with the thicker neoprene half sleeve. That is soooo much better!

New Power Rack Cage
Between sets, I glance over at the new cage. A small diagram on the side bar shows the different exercises that can be performed on it. It appears that the bar is affixed to metal rods that keep it inline. A guy drags one of the big adjustable benches over to do Inclined Presses. He's flummoxed by the way the bar is attached to the guides, eventually gives up, and resorts to DBs while still seated inside the cage.

There's a lot more people willing to check out the tricep machine and the new chest press than the rack. The rack looks medieval even though it's brand spanking new. Next week maybe I'll get one of the trainers to show me just how it works because I'm curious. The rack also has pull-up handles at the very front top of the cage. I can't reach them without standing on something very tall, and the hammer-grip handles are probably too wide for me anyway. But I won't know unless I try.

Leg Day Selfie
I see Jude, The Mayor and other regulars. Because all the equipment has been rearranged, people are milling about trying to locate their favorite bench, etc. I can't find anything to use as a low bench for my Split Squats so I grab a bosu ball. That actually works well since it's the right height. My injured left index finger only hurts intermittently so I put my VGs on for the heavier sets of Smith SLDLs. The diagram on the new cage suggests that one can perform DLs there but I'm not sure whether you'd be facing the mirror or the gym to do it. I've done a lot more sets today than I have for the past few weeks. I think doing a 30 minute warm-up really helps. But the idea of GHRs leaves me worried. Still, I'm not one to let the thought of failure keep me from the very last exercise in my routine.

I'm actually surprised that I can do actual GHRs today, pushing myself up to perpendicular, feeling my hamstrings and calves contract. Or at least I get the first two sets, and then most of the last set. By rep 8, I can feel my lower back, a signal that my form is crumbling. Back to the ellipticals for 30 minutes. I try talking myself into doing just 10 min of HIIT cardio, but since I did 12 last time, I do 12 this time. I'm trying to work up to 15 min of HIIT, and 20 min of LISS. Today I manage to keep the LISS portion fairly steady. And although HIIT started off a bit slow, with me hitting a max of 264 for the first three cycles, my legs acclimatize and I'm able to reach a max of 284 for a few seconds during the 10th cycle. Then it's all downhill. Well, not really. But I'm only able to reach 264-268 for the last two cycles. Then it's a slow jog. The gym is fairly empty today because it's nice out and that's where everyone wants to be. I seize this opportunity to use the Step Mill for 15 minutes for more LISS. At least we're not hiking tomorrow: I'm sure my glutes are going to be complaining.

Maybe A New Plan

I'm not liking how little time I seem to have and as much as I enjoy my gym time, I need to cut back. My biggest worry of course, as a woman in her mid-50s, is that the moment I cut back on my cardio pounds will magically gravitate to my abdomen. There is a lot of information that suggests lower estrogen levels lead to an unpleasant middle-age transformation where fat migrates from the hips to the stomach. Yep, your butt gets saggy and your belly gets bigger. How attractive! Health-wise, stomach fat is the worst fat of all, a potential precursor to diabetes, heart disease and possibly some cancers. Egads!

There is also literature that suggests people of short stature have a greater risk of heart disease, and premature death. Fortunately, this correlation can only be made of men, and not women. Still, I worry whether I'm doing the right things that will enable me to live a long and relatively healthy life. My in-laws are in "assisted care" now since both have declined significantly, mentally and physically. But they were never very active people either. It's scary. And since they live in Florida, the senior center of America, every health institution there is poised to keep them dependent until their finances are completely obliterated. I told my hubs we are absolutely never moving to Florida.

I'm going to try easing back on cardio a little, and cutting back on Arms a lot. My triceps are disproportionately enormous compared to my biceps and forearms. Just as my quads are huge compared to my leg biceps. Elbow and knee issues might be to blame. Bad elbows get painful when doing heavy bicep work. Regardless, if I add a few arm exercises to Chest Day and Back Day, I can just do cardio on Tuesdays. I still want to whack the kickboxing machine once a week so that will be either Thursday or Friday. I'm also going to incorporate more HIIT as well so maybe I only do 20 min sessions instead of 30. And then I'll keep an eye on the scale and my clothes, and see what happens.

Today's workout is fairly routine: two 30 minute cardio sessions, some Smith Squats, Smith Split Leg Squats, Smith SLDLs. My finger still hurts so I cap the SLDLs at 100 lbs because that's as much as my hands can support without VGs. The GHRs are much more difficult now that I'm adding momentum to the push-up movement. I can do 8 before I start to feel my lower back. Then the last 4 reps become more an isometric exercise.

I walk past the Step Mill and realize that they are both vacant. Mine! I do 15 minutes at a leisurely pace but still bust quite a sweat when I'm done. A note about the Smith Split Leg Squat, which I find very effective in isolating the glutes. It really bothers my knees. Not the knee squatting, but the bent knee stationed behind me when I place my foot on a bench. (Today there were no benches available so I used a Step Platform with a half dozen supports to raise it to the desired height.) Lunges bother my knees enough so I don't do them at all.

Creepy PJ Pants is lounging at the cable station across from the Mats where two big, sweaty, middle-age men are chatting, so I decide to do some rudimentary stretches in the empty classroom down the hall. There are two other people there doing their own stretches and box jumps away from the din of the rest of the gym. As I stretch I get a better look at myself in the huge mirrored wall. And the first thing I notice, oddly, is how curvy my body is. I've never thought of myself as curvy because I have a tiny bust and a big broad back, a long waist and short legs. It's a pleasant surprise to finally think, "Hey, everything looks pretty good". Of course, now I'm really worried about changing my program. Because it's not true, you can't just change it back and expect things to revert back to the way they were. The human body just doesn't do that.

Spring Prairie-dogging

When I worked in cubicle-land, we had a term for people suddenly standing up in their space, making a remark and then just as suddenly disappearing behind their cubicle walls and computer monitor. Then someone else pops up and disappears. It's not simultaneous, but abruptly random, like playing Whack-A-Mole. The term is prairie-dogging. There's a form of prairie-dogging happening at the gym, but it's due to the weather. Members pop in and out of the gym, disappearing for months at a time, only to reappear briefly. Regulars are no longer regular. I haven't seen The Mayor or his posse in weeks. I missed the last two days because of Winter Storm Thor. Today I see D at the Nexersys. She's missed several days because of the weather, and slipping on an icy patch under the snow last week, hurting her lower back. Ouch! I've been lucky so far. I penguin walk when I think it might be icy out, especially when walking the dog at night.

I wasn't hungry this morning so I skipped oatmeal but sucked down my instant espresso. Of course I regret this decision halfway through my warm-up cardio on the cross-trainer when I'm suddenly ravenous. Nothing to do but suck down a little water. Hunger passes. Thirst does not. I make decent mileage but I know that in spite of having two days "off", the shoveling and the bitter cold have taken a toll on me. It was 4°F when I took the dog out this morning. No matter. The Smith is free and it's mine for the next three exercises.

I decided last week to take bigger jumps in weight increments, otherwise it just takes too much time and energy. I'm back to 160 lbs as my last set on Smith Squats. I definitely feel them in my upper quads. My knees complain a little so I'm constantly adjusting my stance between sets. I also increase my sets back to 5 with Smith SLDLs, with two warm up sets and three working sets at 120 lbs. At first I tried using just my gloved hands, but couldn't hang on to the bar past 8 reps. After I pulled out the Versa Grips, things went much better.

But no good deed goes unpunished, so I was definitely feeling my lower back during the subsequent Smith One-Leg Split Squats. Those are literally the only exercise where I actually feel my glutes getting sore between sets. My knees aren't really happy with this either. When I'm done, I do 30 min on the elliptical (Performance Program #3) to rest before doing GHRs at the Lat Pull Down. I chat briefly with D and then finish up with most of the Mat Stretch. I add back the Dive Bomber Push Ups and cut my plank to just past a minute. I also do a few Pistol Squats. I know these movements are doing more than just making me sore. I have a pair of workout pants that were uncomfortably tight when I first started coming to the gym. When I dropped 20 lbs, they were suddenly baggy. Now they fit perfectly in the places they're suppose to fit.

I see a lot more regulars including Texas (who just had her second baby a few months ago), SoulPatch (a beefy young guy whose pointy chin and nose remind me of Peter Pettigrew aka Scabbards), B, M, Flirty Girl, Jerry'O and Barbie Doll, Shazam and Jeannie. I don't know anyone's name because that would require conversation. I really only talk to people after my workout is done. I'm reminded of a conversation I overheard last week. Three HS girls were trying to coordinate their workouts while still in the locker room. "Actually, I work out better if I do it by myself," one girl confessed to the other two. "I don't really get a lot done otherwise," another girl concedes. Exactly.

My husband is still in Boston but behind schedule due to the Delta mishap at LGA. I hope he'll be home in time to come to my son's kung fu performance and banquet tomorrow. He tells me he's had no sleep and he's very cranky. So now I worry about his 3-hr drive home as well. Next week promises a real taste of Spring, with temps in the 40s. That might make up for the hour of sleep we lose this Sunday. When we're suppose to march in the St Pat's parade because we're Cub Scouts.

The Difference Between Mental and Physical Fatigue

I was quite unhappy that the thermometer read -2°F this morning when I took the dog for a walk. The dog wasn't too happy either. And the birds are decimating the suet block and sunflower seeds in record time. They arrive at sunup, which is about 7 am, and seem quite disappointed until I manage to refill everything. I do manage to make and eat my oatmeal and egg breakfast because I didn't want to be hungry all day. Hunger is distracting and I have too many things to do.

I keep a cooler in my car with two water bottles in it. I don't even need to put ice packs in the cooler with my protein shake because the water bottles are frozen rock solid. The protein shake is brain-freeze cold by the time I get to it, but it tastes better than at room temperature. I'm tired, and not happy about having to get up early for the Cub Scout Klondike event tomorrow morning at 9 am. Through a chain of emails, we parents discover that our identifying banner is missing so I volunteer to make another one for the Junior Webelos sled. Which meant that I was up late, painting and snipping and gluing felt together. I'm tired this morning. But today is Leg Day. I have to do some cardio. And then I'll see about whatever else.

I have my pick of cross-trainers so I grab the one closest to the front door. I've got my hoodie on and use the overly-long sleeves to hold the metal handles until I get warmed up. I also have shorts on, but my legs don't really get cold. My toes, on the other hand, like my fingers, turn numb and blue in an instant. I get myself nice and sweaty and log 3.75 miles. Better than yesterday even though I feel, or I think I feel tired. Maybe it's all the thoughts I have floating around in my head, like the commuter train wreck, and the fiasco MindCraft meetup this past Tuesday. I wrote the librarian a letter comparing the setup to an online Lord of the Flies with overtones of Animal Farm. She responded by promising to resolve the issues. I've told one of my son's friend's parent that "yes, I'm the pushy parent." Because when there's a problem, I will tell you to your face.

I'm happy that the Smith is free although someone left the 25 lb plates on the bar. But there's absolutely no one in the area. Mine. I do Smith Squats because those seem like a good basic way to warm up. Okay, yeah, cardio is warming up, but it's not quite the same. Afterwards, I do a few sets of Smith SLDLs. I've decided to cut sets and weight on these because I'm not feeling it where I want as much as I thrust my hips into the bar as I pull the weight up.

The Smith Split-Leg Squat is another matter. I start off with just the bar (30 lbs). Then gingerly add 10 lbs to each side. The added weight makes the movement harder on my knees. Then I add another 10 lbs per side but I'm only doing 3 sets. At least for now. I suspect my hamstrings are toast so I delay GHRs by doing 30 minutes on the elliptical, Performance Program #2, half of which is done pedaling backwards. When I finally get around to the GHRs at the Lat Pull Down machine, my hamstrings are still a little shaky and I grimace under my hoodie to get my sets done. I'm not so tired anymore. Cardio does that for me, but I'm not sure why.

I'm babying my shoulders today because they feel odd, so no push-ups although I do a good long leg and upper body stretch on the mat. I even toss in a few pistol squats for fun. I'm hoping I don't have to shovel this weekend, but weather's so unpredictable.

Leg Day Friday

The front of my legs have been a bit sore all week. It might be the fact that I'm pushing myself to do 6+ miles instead of 5 lately. Maybe I should cut back? Today is Leg Day and I log in close to six and a half miles. So much for being sore. The sad thing is that, according to the logging app I use, I lift so much less for legs than I do for back workouts. Most people push more, but then again, most people are trying to grow their glutes and quads, and I most certainly am not. I got a hard enough time just fitting into the clothes I already own!

I actually went to sleep holding one of those chemical pocket warmers because my hands are sore enough to cause me trouble writing a note to my son's teacher. Bleah. I feel so dang delicate. When I woke up, the little packet was still warm! And my fingers weren't too stiff either. I do some core, a lot of cardio, and my basic Mat Stretch. The gym is crowded with newbies. I see the staff showing prospective members around. I guess the New Year's resolution has kicked in. I haven't gotten around to trying the Dolphin Push Ups yet, but it's on my list. It always takes me a while to try new things. Today I stayed fairly moderate with my weights although I know I could've gone heavier. I just don't want to get bigger. With that in mind, I've gone back to drinking my protein supplement after my workouts because I'm just too busy to be able to fix a decent meal for myself that fulfills my protein requirements without going over on everything else.

Next Monday is a school holiday so I'll have my son in tow. I guess it'll be an abbreviated workout. Maybe I'll just do some cardio. Unless my son and I do cardio over the weekend... Hmmmm.

Wednesday Means Leg Day

I'm slowly easing back into my weight routine although I haven't been quite so cautious with the cardio. I just feel so much better when I do 5+ miles. Today I reverted back to 30 min on the LifeFitness and 25 min on the Precor, bookending Smith machine Squats, SLDLs, Glute Ham Raises and some ab work. And I feel pretty good. Some slight stiffness in the shoulders and upper back but nothing painful. I do have to remember not to schedule my Leg Workout the day after Back Day because my lower back is tired. This doesn't affect my Smith Squats as much as it does my Smith SLDLs. Today I get my full set of Squats, but cut the SLDLs short at just three sets.

If I move Leg Day to the end of the week, my lower back will be better rested and I'm sure I'll be back to a full six sets at decent weight. Doing RG BB Rows is akin to a Dead Lift for the first movement because I'm pulling the bar off the floor. Probably another reason to move back to using the 45 lb plates (yesterday I used the 35s and added 10s and 5s) — the bigger plate sets the bar higher off the ground. I have enormous calves so the only work I do for them is stretch them at the Cage.

In the locker room, I take a few quick selfies in the mirror but they don't really show my legs so I give up and catch a bicep shot. I'm actually surprised at how well they've held up considering I haven't done a curl all summer, biceps only being worked when I do rows and chin ups. Again I'm surprised when the scale reads 109.4 lbs. This Halloween Candy Diet seems to agree with me. Later I go to the store to see if there's anything cute that I can wear to my photo show reception this Sunday. I'm half tempted to go in my jeans and T-shirt (which is how I tend to dress most of the time). But it's kind of a special occasion so maybe I'll dress up. Except it's going to be 45°F. I find a cute velvet dress that seems to look great with my cowboy boots. And it's only $17. Good thing it was Leg Day today.
