Why The Heck Is It So Dang Crowded In Here?

Today's Selfie
My husband and I had a great time last Friday at the PTO Auction Fundraiser Dinner Dance. It wasn't actually dinner, and for a while we worried that there wasn't any dancing either. Instead, there were appetizers... chips, cheese, cold cuts, grape leaves, empanadas, and lots of well-seasoned tiny lamb chops. And the bar was included so if you didn't want champagne, which was being offered by the waitstaff, then you could get a beer or wine, or any mixed drink. I ate a lot of lamb chops.

The actual auction itself was being hosted by a DJ so there was hope that after everything was bid for, there'd be dancing. And there was. My husband and I were both hot and sweaty by the end of it all, but we were very happy. I have to say that it was the best $100 I ever spent for "dinner", booze and dancing. Plus the entertainment of watching other parents outbid each other for odd items, like the framed and matted, autographed 5th grade class photo. Nice, but hardly worth $300. Maybe I'm not as sentimental as some folks?

Today it's snowing as I walk my son to the school bus stop. The snow's not sticking because it's 33F, but by the time he gets off the bus, we're being pelted with sleet. I'm assuming the bad weather is the reason the gym is so crowded today. Plus, it's Monday post-Easter, post-Lent. People have indulged and everyone's worried about shedding their winter bodies. I'm a bit heavier than I'd like to be, but overall I can't complain as long as I stick to my routines!

I'm at the gym long enough to witness the ebb and flow of the gym crowd. The morning people leave and it's quite pleasant. Then the early lunch crowd arrives and it's crowded again. I've tossed my old gym gloves because they're so worn and torn that they're making my fingers itch. I have a pair of barely used black workout gloves (Valeo), but the built-in wrist wraps are uncomfortable. I get a pair of scissors from the front desk and snip the wraps off. The gloves fit okay and I like the padded palms, especially during pull ups. But afterwards, I discover that the black leather dye is transferring onto my fingers and hands. Ugh! I hate that! Luckily, I probably have at least two more different pairs of gloves at home (Altus, Harbinger). The gym owner says that the company (FlexSports) that made my old gloves doesn't answer, so they've probably gone out of business. Bummer.

I look on Amazon (because you can usually find just about anything there) and there are a few FlexSports gloves but very little information as to whether this is suitable to replace my old gloves. Gloves are everything to me because of my tiny hands and fingers. And even with padded gloves, I still develop callouses that need to be filed smooth! Oh well. I toss a pair of Contraband Pink Label lifting gloves into my virtual shopping basket. I'm not sure how they'll perform, but it's better than being barehanded, or having black half-fingers.

I concentrate of chest and delts today, without neglecting cardio, or hammer grip pull ups. My only issue during Smith Bench Pressing is that my nylon tank is too slippery. Seriously. Nothing more frustrating that finding yourself sliding across the bench as you press 120 lbs up off your chest. Perhaps I need to situate myself more directly under the bar, and wear a cotton tank next time. I can't really plant my feet on the ground because my legs are too short, so my feet are perched on the bench feet itself. This means that I'm pushing against the bench and sliding. Maybe I should just pull my legs up and put my feet flat on the bench instead? Because I'm a bit frustrated that I can only get 20 reps (instead of 25) at 90 lbs, I drop 10 lbs and immediately do another high-rep set. Okay, that feels better, like I actually did some work.

The DB area is almost totally vacant and that makes me happy. Half-way through my routine, 4 different guys show up, and suddenly everyone's jockeying for space and benches. Ugh. It's not pretty. The Mayor and his cronies spend so much time talking loudly, I wonder how they manage to say they actually work out with a straight face. Skinny J keep hovering in my periphery. It's annoying. I suspect that he, like a lot of the middle-age guys there, wants me to acknowledge his presence. I don't know why. I have nothing to say to any of them. Chatting takes gym time, and being social isn't worth "cooling down". The gym's not a place for that, at least for me. I do say Hi briefly to Mo who hasn't been at the gym for the past two and a half years. She just left a job and will be needing a new one soon, but in the interim, there's no better place to de-stress and get back into shape. She tells me that I look even younger than before because of my grown-out hair. It's been a long time since my hair came to my elbows. Yep, I certainly was younger then, by at least 20 years.

My mother-in-law passed away last Friday. I'd heard that she contracted pneumonia over Easter and wasn't expected to survive it. So I'm surprised to learn that she lasted the week, and I wonder if she'd been waiting for my husband. Even with her severe memory and speech loss, she still recognized my husband (and only him) when we visited last December. And I can't help but wonder if she had been holding on just to say Good Bye to him. Of course, my husband, like many men, are so engulfed in their work responsibilities that he needs a direct order to do otherwise. And, like many men, my husband is not good at dealing with illness or death, or strong emotions. I've already dealt with the passing of both my parents. My husband, who is younger, now has to deal with his. At least he works out at the hotel gym, because he doesn't want to descend into the physical and mental frailties of a sedentary life. Being adopted, he's not genetically related to anyone in his family, but becoming frail and confused is a real worry. As we get older, we seem to age faster!

Raising the Bar

Saturday's weather turned nasty just as scouts from our pack volunteered at a local church to help prepare, transport and serve dinner to homeless people at a shelter across the county. Oddly, there were more scouts than meal recipients although the shelter had 17 people (men and women) registered for beds that night. Only 4 or 5 people actually showed up. We had 8 scouts and the additional scout parents, den leaders and the cub master in attendance. The meatloaf, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots and green beans, all freshly made, were actually quite tasty. Sunday we had a Den meeting where we practiced knot tying, and discussed (and practiced) important first-aid procedures like tourniquets, the Heimlich maneuver, and how to treat frostbite. I'm really tired by this morning. After I see my son off at the school bus stop, I have to travel across the county to see the glaucoma specialist.

I don't wear glasses yet but I'm guessing my vision is now 25/20. There was a time when it was 20/15 meaning I could see at 20 yards what most people could see at 15 yards. Still, coming up on 55 years with uncorrected vision is pretty good. The doc puts drops in my eyes to dilate the pupils and other drops that are a mild anesthetic. My IOPs are good for most people, but probably not good for people like me, who have an inherited form of glaucoma and oddly shaped optic nerves. The doc tells me to make an appointment for a Visual Field test, and then to see her in September. I'll see my regular opthamologist in 4 months. I'm always a little stressed when I have to drive distance, especially the highways because I don't fit comfortably in my car, perched up on two pillows with my arms fully extended. I'm too short to really be able to see over my shoulder because the headrest gets in the way. When I get to the gym, my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.

I'm sure that I'm having an odd reaction to those drops because pedaling on the cross-trainer at a good clip barely registers a heart rate. When the machine finally does register, it reads an unlikely 108 BPM. That can't be right. Toward the end of 30 minutes, the numbers zoom up to 120, giving me an average heart rate of 113 BPM, which is totally wrong. It must be the eye drops. But is it the dilating drops? Or the anesthetic? I suspect the former because I've had the "reversal" drops to un-dilate your pupils and that makes my heart race. I feel tired, but the machine tells me I've logged in just over 4 miles. I'll take it.

The Smith machine is free so I'm happy. I can Bench Press and then swap benches for Inclined Bench Press. My benching feels okay, the 130 lbs not as easy as I would like. What feels really good is the 25 reps at 90 lbs that follows. Inclined Benching on the Smith is better, and I realize that I should probably be pushing more weight after my 2nd set of 12 reps at 70 lbs. Next week I'll see what 90 lbs feels like and hope I don't hurt myself.

DB Laterals super set with DB Reverse Flyes feel really heavy today. My left elbow is a bit ornery from shoveling the heavy wet snow we got Saturday night. Still, I grind out my sets and am really happy to have all the ellipticals to myself. I pick one and punch in Performance Program #2. I do most of my Mat Stretch but leave out Pistol Squats and Planks. Dive Bomber Push Ups are hard today. The stretch feels good, the hot shower feels better. Tomorrow is Back Day. Hope I'm up for it. My glutes were sore all weekend, but that 6.6 miles today got the kinks out.

Moving On

I felt a little bad this morning, watching the sap drip off the red maple like tears. I know that a tree really should be pruned during the late fall when the sap stops running, but winter seemed to have come too quickly for me to get my act together. I figure I'd prune the branches before they sprouted those tiny red flowers followed by the whirlagig samaras and then lacey red leaves. It's a vigorous tree, transplanted as a 4 inch seedling from the swamp behind my house, nourished by the bodies of two of my best dogs. Still, I'm glad when the sap stops pouring from the open bark of the missing limbs. Yesterday was Easter and we had a quiet day at home with my son reveling in Easter basket goodies, my husband preparing a new round of home-made beef jerky and whole-grain honey cakes, the dog basking lazily in the sun while snapping at bees.

Today is just as sunny. I read that there might be shooting stars (Lyrid meteor shower) visible tonight. We're rarely lucky enough to see anything, especially with rain in the forecast. At least the rain will be good for the snow peas and zucchini seeds I set out in the raised bed. The gym parking lot is really crowded but it's Monday. Everyone is guilty of feasting over the weekend. Still, the Precors are free and I get my 20 minutes done. My shoulders have been twingey all weekend so I'm a bit wary of benching today. But because I'm planning to cut back on weights over the next several months, I try to stick to my routine today. There's not a lot of people in the free weight area and at 125 lbs, which really, I can handle myself, I finally ask M to spot me. I hate asking him. Maybe he can tell because he offers to spot me at 135 lbs but it's a very sullen abrupt offer. I'll be happy to drop my benching weight because then I won't need to ask for a spot. I get six reps but the last rep really started to bother my right shoulder. Not a great set. But done.

I do a few sets of Inclined BB Presses and then settle on doing sets of 12 reps at lower weight for the remainder of my DB exercises: Inclined Flyes, DB Lateral Raises, and Bent-Over Reverse Flyes. I'm good with sets of 12 at 25 lbs for the first two movement, but I realize today that I really should move back to 30 lbs. Because after three sets, I increase the reps for each subsequent set. Until I've done 25 reps for set 6. Which means the weight's too light.

I backload my additional cardio today by climbing back onto the Precor for another 20 minutes. Not LISS but Steady State "jogging" that nets a bit over two miles. My plan is to go back to the 4-5 miles a day of cardio, and to drop my weights but keeping high reps. So, hopefully I don't lose too much strength or muscle, but kickstart a fat burn. I already know that I'm fighting my body's natural inclination. After the second course on the elliptical, I do a full Mat Stretch and end it all with 100 crunches. I see R and chat with him briefly. He always surprises me with how much thought he puts into things I don't normally think men think about: like what it's like to be pregnant and carry a baby inside your body.

The gym scale is definitely not my friend today when it reads 114.6 lbs. I already know I'm big but this is probably water weight from the Easter ham we've been munching on this weekend. The supermarket periodically rewards its loyal shoppers with free hams or turkeys. I had my husband put this 12 lb ham on his smoker for 4 hours at 300 F. It's probably the best ham we've ever eaten. Tomorrow is Back Day. I'm debating whether to gradually add the cardio back in to the front by starting with 30 min and ending with 10 min afterwards, or just getting it all out of the way. I guess I'll see if I even get on an elliptical tomorrow.

Getting My Confidence Back

My son was too tired after kung fu (and an excursion to Hmart) to go to the gym on Saturday. Besides, the next day we'd be marching in the St Pat's parade, carrying our den banner. It's about a 2-mile walk down the main road, the weather sunny and a tad brisk. My son grumbled about his pants chafing his legs, about how boring the march was, about how his hands were tired from holding the banner (nevermind he had two other cubs helping hold it), about how hopelessly landlocked our car would be, about how he wasn't going to get anything special for all this effort. Grumble grumble grumble. Until the march ended at the shopping plaza, and he saw the three llamas parked behind the oil change place, politely snagging carrot slices from outstretched palms. Then he was all smiles, feeding and petting one of the woolly creatures. "No upper teeth, just a hard palate and very flexible lips," their keeper explained to us. But they did have funny irregular bottom teeth, filthy soft fleece and would stand stock-still for a picture if you yelled out "Camera!"

"I need to wash my hands at the pizzeria," my son said to me all smiles. Okay now. The pizza was an exorbitant $2.50 a slice, but each slice was the size of two regular slices so I didn't mind too much. By the time we found our car, the ones parked directly in front and behind us had gone, allowing us to wriggle out from between all the other vehicles still there. It took 30 minutes to leave the lot, but it was just as I had expected, and we didn't really have to be anywhere. I just turned on the radio and rolled down my windows while we inched towards the exit.

Imagine my surprise today when we walked to the school bus stop and there were flurries! At least it's not sticking although my car needs a good wash. The dog's been sick as well and I've been spending a lot of time mopping the kitchen with bleach. Digging around the "dog cabinet" I found an old bottle of Tylan powder, an antibiotic good for canine digestive ailments. The dog's a little better today but I'm worried that this is something a lot worse than the usual "dog ate something spicy but it'll pass and he'll be fine". I look up ruptured anal glands but even though he's scooting a lot, he doesn't have the right symptoms. I make an appointment for him to see the vet next Monday. Hopefully he won't poop in my car. I really hate that.

Today is Chest and Delts and I was nervous about not being able to bench heavy. Luckily, after my 20 minute cardio warm up (steady-state elliptical), I see the woman who helped me out last week. And after my warm up sets, I ask her if she'll spot me even though M, The Mayor, Tall Pace and a bunch of the Regular Guys are closer. But they're all chatting and hanging off the lat and rowing stations. The woman, K, is at first a terrible spot. I need to tell her that I've got the lift myself. I've got the entire set myself. Just help me if I start to fail. She's got her hands nearly under the bar but I still get my sets myself. All three sets. I have my confidence back. Yay! She whispers to me afterwards, "Next time, just add two and a half pounds. You know, a pair of one and a quarter plates." I look at her skeptically, "And why would I do that?" Nevermind that I think the smallest plates are two and a half. "To get stronger," she says and I laugh. "Yeah, okay."

I only have five exercises today: Flat Bench BB Press, Inclined Bench BB Press, Inclined DB flyes, DB Lateral Raises, Bent-Over DB Raises. I'm able to up the weights on three of those exercises so I'm happy. I grab four of the small magnets that are only 1.25 lbs each. The gym owner looks surprised but I tell him that I'm using DBs and don't need to jump 5 lbs, just two and a half. Then I ask him if the Nexersys are fixed and he says mostly. The side Dig sensor is not working but everything else seems okay. I hope it's still okay on Thursday when I plan to whack one of them senseless.

The steps are free and I spend 20 minutes reading email and the online forums while sweat drips off my nose. I make a mental note to do crunches while I'm down on the Mat for stretches. As I get ready to leave, I see R and chat with him briefly about his new baby. He says the baby is so good that he and his wife would gladly have ten of them if they're all like this. I laugh. The baby's getting big and he hopes that his son won't be quite as tall as he is. I'm surprised. "It gets awkward fitting into things," he explains to me. I guess as awkward as being really small.

NSAIDs Are Making Me Fat
