Quickie Full-Body

I admit that what I consider a quick, full-body workout is not what most people consider quick. But it is full body, encompassing cardio, core, back, arms and shoulders. I could add air-squats to make it complete, but I hadn't thought of it at the moment. Maybe next time. The gym was too warm yesterday as no one is going to turn the A/C on in January in spite of temps going to nearly 60. Of course, I also got a bug bite yesterday! Ugh! Today, it was 35F and plenty cold. I kept my hoodie on for most of my workout!

I decide to do Program 3 on the elliptical because I probably hate that one the most. And I haven't done it in weeks. Maybe even months. I also do the 5 minute cool down because I'm not planning on doing any more cardio afterwards. Instead, I have my routine: hammer grip pull ups, push ups and then assorted planks. I hate to agree with all the online fitness articles, but I feel like I'm getting much better results with the variety of planks than I ever did with crunches, sit ups and leg raises. I do miss doing the alternate bicycle crunches though. But I don't miss having to take my hair clip out. Because my hair is such a messy pain, even braided and pinned back.

I do some quick stretches at the Cage, and because I forgot to do them earlier, two sets of Band Pulls. Soooo done! We had store-bought fried chicken yesterday before kung fu class and Boy Scouts. Even though it's loads better than KFC (which is basically a deep-fried salt lick), there's still enough sodium in it for me to notice. I'm not happy with the gym scale (111.0 lbs), and a little surprised looking in the mirror. I'm not seeing puffy water-retention. I see big. So that's a good thing...

Familiar Faces

The day did not start off auspiciously. Yes, it was pleasant out and my hubs had left fresh-pressed coffee for me this morning. The UPS (uninterrupted power source, or basically, a back-up battery) showed its worth by keeping the micro-cell up and running in spite of last night's power blip. I remember waking briefly in the middle of the night because the UPS tends to scream loudly when it senses a power interruption. It's very annoying, because if you're awake, well, then yes, the lights have all gone out, the TV has stopped, and there's no actual need to be startled by an alarm. The microwave blinks madly because it needs to be reset, and the bathroom light develops an irritating low-level hum that apparently only I can hear. But it tells me that the power blipped. And then I reset all the things that need to be reset. Things that no one else in my house ever notices.

While sipping coffee and getting my son ready for camp, I get a text from my hubs saying his car died. What?! Later he texts me that it died on the highway while he was driving to work but he had enough momentum to safely get across to the side of the road. He was having the car towed to the dealership. It's 11 years old and whatever part was broken, well, no point in going anywhere but to the dealership. Eventually they give him a loaner car, and the option of replacing the engine with one that has only 79K. His car has well over 250K miles on it. A broken timing belt pulley completely totaled the engine. Either fix it, or get a new used car. Ugh. I guess we're going to look at new used cars tomorrow, although he's leaning towards just replacing the engine. I worry that after the engine, it'll be something else. But everything seems okay on the car. Except for the tail hatch, and the dashboard light. We do love our Subies.

Once at the gym, I settle into my routine, but using my new Sony earphones. The sound quality is better than the earplug earbuds, but it doesn't block out peripheral noise as well. At least the sound quality doesn't change when I tilt my head. I feel tired but that's probably because I skipped yesterday. You'd think that would make me feel more energized, and in reality, I do have more energy. I just don't recognize it. However, I'm able to get 31 reps of pull ups for all my sets. Must be more energy? I can knock out 100 push ups without the pause at rep 80 or 90. That's so far from when I struggled to do sets of 50 push ups, interspersed with pull ups. 12 pull ups was hard. But I hadn't figured out the proper technique yet, saving my elbows and using my back. Yep, sometimes you just don't appreciate how far you've come until you stop and really think about where you used to be.

It's summer and there are familiar faces here. Faces that have been MIA for months, if not years. ZZ is greeted by the Mayor like a long lost friend. I see a few other guys, but there are several missing women. The anorexia queen seems to have put on a few pounds so she's not so painful to look at. There's one guy who looks like he could be Kyle Clark's kid brother. But I know KC doesn't have a kid brother because KC is a fitness model, actor, spokesperson and FaceBook presence who lives in LA with his too cute Pomeranian, Koda. But this kid is nice looking, and I glimpse him without actually staring. Finally, someone with a nice bod to look at. Seriously. A gal's' gotta have some distractions. And I'd have to be stupid not to think that he knows I'm looking. Because everyone looks. Just not blatantly.
This is Kyle Clarke

I can't get on the Smith right away so I do three sets of RG BB Rows on the Max Rack. I don't miss doing this movement. All the small benches are in use so I do sets of Smith Inclined Benching. For reps. Then, not quite an after thought, Smith SLDLs. I'm lucky to get 8 reps at 130. Again, I feel my form start to break down so I cut my reps, then I drop the weight and try for more reps. This is the one truly exhausting movement! Nothing compares to this.

I need some smaller movements before my next set of pull ups, and DB laterals fits the bill. I'm toying with the idea of heavier weight and fewer reps, but not just yet. Besides, the DB is suddenly really crowded. Ugh. And because I need to balance out these monster triceps (kidding), I do a few sets of Seated One-Arm Cable Rows. They're almost more a bicep exercise than lat movement. At least for me. Especially after knocking out a set of pull ups, because as much as I try to isolate my back when doing this, the biceps and forearms are still involved.

I can't resist doing Intervals today and they really kick my butt. It feels good. I'm exhausted. And I can still do another set of pull ups! Yaaay! Then some quick stretches and off to shower. We're having some friends over on the 4th so I have groceries to buy. And a big party package of "sparklers", because they're suddenly legal in NYS now.

Happy Fourth of July!

Sore From Housework

I woke up with unusual tenderness just below my ribs, repercussions from spending two hours yesterday scrubbing the green copper film off our jacuzzi tub. Even though I was lying on a towel placed over the tub edge, there was apparently enough pressure generated to cause some tissue damage. And my arms and shoulders are sore too. All that from scrubbing the tub down to the ceramic. I even bought SoftScrub® just for this job, although some of the stubborn soap scum required a dash of baking soda. It's a big deep tub. And, unfortunately, even though we have a water softener, the hard water is eroding the hot water pipes and depositing them on the tub. It's a good thing I skipped the gym yesterday, but I went today. No cleaning today other than the usual laundry and dishes... Yes, my house is a pit. I admit it. I'm not housewife material.

I feel exhausted when I do my first leg of cardio, and not much better with my first set up pull ups. Facing the mat to do push ups had me grimacing through most of it. My abs are sore and the jiggling and jostling from pedaling the cross-trainer didn't inspire any confidence. However, crunches and planks were fine. I don't feel like dragging the smaller flat bench through the maze of equipment to bring it to the Smith, so I just use what's already there: the oversized Adjustable Inclined Bench. And I do a few sets of Inclined Benching. And a few sets of DB Laterals superset with Reverse Flyes. I'm just too dang tired.

I don't even want to do Rip Skulls. Instead, I kill some time with the Torso Twist machine. I'm waiting for creepy PJ Pants to leave the adjacent machine. He's gotten slovenly and fat again. (Gosh, that decline was quick! But I've noticed this a lot at my gym where someone will start to look really good, and then a week goes by and Poof! they've put on 20 lbs overnight and lost everything. Weird, but not unusual.) I do a set of pull ups before the last leg of cardio, and I'm surprised that this is easier. I don't really feel tired anymore either. Yep, weird.

Cardio starts off hard but feels easy by the time 30 minutes is done. I guess I'm just super slow to warm up. I'm wearing my new raspberry Asics, and although I'd love for them to be a skosh wider, they aren't bad. Afterwards, I stretch and then manage another set of pull ups. The last rep was hard, but I got it done. Yaaaay!

It's a New Day

I'm really starting to favor the new Asics. I like them better than the Rykas I've been using because they offer more stability when I'm moving weight and need to really plant my feet. The Rykas are too mushy for SLDLs or even RG BB Rows. It takes me a long time to get out the door this morning, but I like not having to battle the locker room crowds as they exit a zumba or jazzercise class.

My plan for today is to do cardio, then a full body workout, then more cardio. My right foot doesn't go quite as numb today even though I'm still doing 30 minutes on the Cross-Trainer. I'm wondering about variations on pull ups as I muscles through my first set. But my joints are so sensitive that I'm a bit leery of trying something different. Doing more sets or more reps is definitely the safer route. But it does get a little dull.

I'm worried when I can't push myself past 75 push ups during the warm up. Well, just more energy for the Smith Bench, I tell myself. Except the Mayor and clique are there. Aarg. I don't play well with others so there's no way I want to work in. Instead, I grab some light DBs and do a set of DB presses. When I look up, the Mayor & Co have moved on to another station. Yaaaay! I made sure not to wear a nylon tank today so that I wouldn't slide down the bench. It's been a problem lately. There are guys using the pull up feature of the MaxRack the next station over, but they're done by the time I want to use it. So far so good.

Knowing that my lower back has been sensitive to RG BB Rows, I only do a few light sets in the Smith. I move to the MaxRack for SLDLs because I don't have to worry about rotating the bar and getting caught on the stays, which is what happens in the Smith. Doing SLDLs is the only movement that really leaves me a bit breathless. But I like how I can see all the muscles in my chest and shoulders when I pull up straight.

I tell myself I'm only doing big movements today, but then I find myself with DBs at the adjustable inclined bench. DB laterals and reverse flyes. Just 3 sets. And just 3 sets of BB uprights. They still stress my right elbow and forearm even though I've gone back to the lighter 30 lb BB. For a moment I'm tempted to do Rip Skulls, but it's getting late. So my last 30 minutes on the elliptical doing Intervals. It's a love-hate thing. It's hard, but I really enjoy it. Then my last set of pull ups, a stretch and a few pistol squats for fun. Yep.

I'm still using those Plugfones even though the sound quality changes every time I shift my head down or move my jaw. Weird. But it's better than having to listen to ridiculous conversations. I see newbies, and some old members come back from hibernation. They don't look much different. Except for Shaggy. He's dropped some weight and is looking fairly trim. Animé Hair girl has dyed her lovely gray-blue hair and it's now a deep red. I liked it better when it was gray-blue. I've walked into the locker room a few times while she was taking a selfie. Of course she was embarrassed and I told her No problem. I do it too. I even offered to help her shoot her back but she demurred. Now she's gone and changed her hair to something more pedestrian, although it's very rich and shiny-looking. Oh well...

Running On Half A Tank

I read somewhere that daughters were prone to inheriting their mothers' craziness. I hope it's not true. My mom was bat-shit crazy. Not the obvious "cat lady hoarder crazy", but unhinged nonetheless. When I read that OCD could be related to untreated childhood rheumatic heart disease, I felt like I'd been granted a reprieve. I'm not as compulsive as my mother, but there are personality traits I'd rather not have. Like anxiety. Occasionally I wake up in a panic with racing thoughts, and irrational fear. I think our society may have such tendencies as a whole, explaining our obsession with "leisurely" pursuits that allow us to self-medicate and obliviate our worries. (Yes, that's a real word.) It explains the despair and hopeless rage of mass murder and suicides. It is scary as hell.

If you're not a cog in the machine, then what are you? Are your thoughts rational or delusional? They seem to change like the weather. If my visual perception can change dramatically without the aid of lenses or mind/mood altering products, then what of emotional and intellectual perceptions. For example, I once described an acquaintance as tall and thin as she loomed over me. But she's only two to three inches taller than me and probably the same weight. Astigmatism? I don't think it works quite like that. My emotions have run the gamut from raging despair to quiet happiness in a span of a few weeks where nothing else has changed. Is this menopause brain?

I'll be 56 next month, and I'm trying to wrap my head around getting soft and flabby. It's not a comforting thought. Marketeers of hearing aids and assisted living plans are all too eager to sell unnecessary items to me. Rosie, the senior who walks a mile and a half to the gym, tells me she thinks I'm in my 30s. She needs better glasses, but I'm flattered. And I don't feel quite as soft and dumpy anymore, even though I know I've looked better.

I had a dream about being surrounded and lost in a literal mountain heap of black plastic garbage bags, strewn with small yellow shopping bags. Someone was asking me why I was shopping so much. And I woke up in a panic, my heart racing, worried that I was sitting on the edge of a precipice, too scared to move. My mother suffered from agoraphobia. I don't have that issue, but I'm not a big traveler. When I roamed, when I was younger, it was with a sense of fated recklessness. Now I have responsibilities, people I care about and love. And I feel paralyzed, with too many projects I have yet to start and complete. I feel overwhelmed. What I really need to do is breathe. Calm down, make a list, and then actually check the items off as I get them done. Without distractions. Going to the gym is a distraction. But it is also a calming meditation, and in a sense, medication for my over-wired brain.

I get to the gym today, having had fractured and disturbing sleep. I'm lagging a bit. But I still manage over 6 miles in cardio. Still knock out a few push ups and pull ups, bench a few reps. The sciatica threatens to cramp my hamstring as I add plates to the bar. But I up the reps on the Reverse Incline DB Flyes. I only do two sets of pull ups though, because today the Stretch Cage is very popular with the Seniors. My sciatica really bothers me when I pull myself up straight so I curl my knees into my chest. I feel a familiar strain under my sternum as I pull. Not a good feeling. Is my gall bladder acting up? Or my liver? The only thing that seems easy are the Drag Curls. I should probably up those weights next time.
