Running On Fumes

Since my hubs has gone full fat / no carbs and I have trouble with fatty foods, you'd think we'd have the perfect balance of meals. He's cooked bacon so many times that I now find myself wrinkling up my nose and flat out turning it down. I still like having avocados with mashed garlic though. Last night I put that atop a baked russet potato. It felt like a treat. This morning I ate my standard coffee with fixings, and skyr yogurt with vitamins. So I wasn't expecting the crash halfway through my "kickboxing" workout!

With one minute to go on Round 2 of the Intermediate set, I suddenly feel all my energy drain away. Like pulling the plug out of the bath and watching the water spiral down the drain. Weird and a bit disconcerting! I'd felt perfectly energetic right up to that moment. Perhaps it was the 3 rounds of Sparring? I haven't done that in a while, and I avoided wasting my punches on the one sensor that only registers blows sporadically. Actually, less than sporadically. I still finished the set. And, in spite being ravenous enough to eat my hand, I managed to squeeze out my hammer grip pull ups. But I didn't have the energy for the Mat Stretch.

I admit that my legs are a bit stiff and sore today, but nothing painful. It's just a vague reminder of yesterday's workout. I get home and make myself a bowl of oatmeal, fully intending to let it cool enough so I can add whey powder and not have it cook into a unappetizing gummy mess. I use milk instead of water. And add an egg after a minute so it can poach. Then I decide to add cocoa. It tastes pretty good! But damn I'm tired. Good thing I'm probably not going to the gym tomorrow as the dog has his annual appointment. I'm hoping the dog will last the year, but he's old, and slightly incontinent. His back legs are wobbly, and half the time he won't eat. Still, he's been with us 15 years, so we'll keep him as long as he's able to get up...

Creeping Into Leg Day

Yesterday I tossed all my size 0 and 00 pants into a kitchen trash bag. My son's school is holding a social this evening, and kids who bring in donations of used clothing, shoes and household linens will receive an extra raffle ticket. Last time my son won a FitBit 2, which he gave me for Christmas, but still sits unopened in its box. I've come to terms with the fact it's highly unlikely I'll ever be thin enough to wear those pants again. Actually, it was too much work: all cardio and not really any lifting. I can't see myself doing that again. I still don't want big legs, or rather, bigger legs. That fear alone has kept me from pushing weight for the quads and glutes. Residual tenderness in the right hamstring from too many bouts of sciatica make me leery of leg curls and the like.

However, I have been toying with doing something more than just cardio. So today, Cardio Day, I add a set of super light Smith squats to the mix. I jump on the chance to use the cross-trainer, so no Intervals. (I can only do those on the elliptical.) The machine I've chosen, fairly new, clunks slightly with each rotation. Something's either out of alignment, or there's gunk in the flywheel. Ugh. Regardless, I do my 30 minutes. Then some pull ups. The Smith is empty so I'm there in a heartbeat. I'll do Core afterwards. I have a lot of trouble with my elbows and a regular Olympic bar when I've tried to do squats in the Squat Rack, hence the Smith.

The Interstitium?
In the Smith, I can drop down to my heels with just the bar, which is about 30 lbs. Once I add some small plates, I'm only able to dip slightly below parallel before my knees complain. I have finicky knees. When I'm positioned correctly, I have no issue with my slightly tender lower back or quads, or knees. But as I add weight, the bottom of the back of my neck complains. I'm not a big enough person to sit the bar across the back of my shoulders and hold it there comfortably. I use my hoodie as well as the foam pad, but the weight still bothers me. I have a huge issue with compression because I suspect that my dry skin (ichthylosis vulgaris) is related to other structural issues. The latest news claims a new organ has been discovered just under the skin, called the Interstitium (composed of connective tissue and fluid). I'll bet mine crushes easily, which would explain rolling collapsible veins, Raynaud's syndrome and problems I have with restrictive clothing. Ugh.

Well, I wasn't planning on going heavy anyway so I'm perfectly happy with just 90 lbs. After Core, I try out a few pistol squats. After 3, my quads are a little sore. I could keep going but I'd rather do the Step Mill for 15 minutes. Then the Expresso Bike. I'm still really warm when I'm done, so doing the Mat Stretch is much more pleasant today. The gym scale says 110.8 lbs. Well, that's not horrible.

I'm wearing a gray Old Navy® tank. It's a bit clingy but not too annoying. I've plugged my old earplug earbuds into my newer iPod Nano because the old Nano suddenly got funky with different volumes for each and every song. Very distracting to constantly have to adjust the volume in the middle of a workout! The LLBean fitness pants are great now that they've been hemmed, and the ill-conceived pocket has been removed. People who design pants with waist band pockets where the zipper pull sits in the center of your back when closed are people who have never ever "worked out and wanted to lay down to stretch."

I read an article recently about some women who are rebelling against the tyranny of consumer fashion by creating sturdy, well-made, unisex one-piece jumpsuits. Not caring how you look is very freeing. It saves a lot of time when you stand in front of your closet and bemoan whether your clothes look okay or not. It's wonderful not to be judged on how sexy you look in a skirt or pants. I agree that this culture is overwhelmingly geared towards consumerism with disposable clothing and appliances, because that's the driving force behind capitalism. But these gals take it a bit far, and tread dangerously on communist waters. They go so far as to address each other as comrade. Ugh. But they're too young and naive to understand the tyranny of Mao's unisex suits, and the dehumanization of being nameless and faceless. You can rebel in other ways... I prefer to wear boy's flannel shirts that last forever. And utilitarian pants and shoes. But my gym clothes, well, they make me feel good if they fit right. And I don't care what anybody thinks about it.

What Are The Goals Again?

I hate to admit it, but I feel younger at the gym. Not just because there are a lot of decrepit old people there. Not just because there are a lot of out-of-shape middle-age folks, and a sizeable number of weak youngsters. Perhaps it's because no one is making any preconceived assumptions anymore. I feel strong, and fast and flexible. Kind of like a superhero. And isn't that what we all secretly want? When I stand next to my 13 year old, I suddenly feel short. And old. Weird. I don't think I'm going to fall into that little old lady stereotype too easily though.

The gym is once again crowded in the morning, and empty by noon. I get on the elliptical and do 30 minutes at Program 2 to warm up. Some pull ups and then I'm at the Smith. I save some Core for afterwards. I'm wearing my Asics, which are a stiffer shoe and better for pulling the bar up. But I only lower the bar about 2 inches below my knee, especially as the bar gets heavier. At 170 lbs, I discover new callouses immediately under my pointer fingers. I can't wear gloves with anything over 100 lbs, especially since I'm using Versa Gripps. My hands and fingers are too small for additional fabric between me and the bar. I had a substantial breakfast of coffee and a protein shake (whey powder, cocoa powder, fat-free lactose-free milk), but I still felt under-powered. Pulling 170 lbs left me breathing hard, and perspiring slightly. But of course, I actually went for more reps this week. One of these days I'll listen to the pros...

I'm wearing a different tank today. The fabric is slightly thicker than the last two I've worn. The princess seams make the tank more fitted than most I own. I feel like I have a waist! There's a cute cut-out in the back so I wear an appropriate sports bra: the crazy pink one with the maddening criss-crossing triple straps. I don't want to worry about my iPod Nano so I'm also wearing the yoga pants with a substantial (two color band) waistband. Land's End® used to sell them over 10 years ago, but not anymore. I used to think the rise was too short, but in reality, I was just too fat. After dropping from 129 lbs down to 105, the pants were suddenly too droopy. Now, at 111 lbs, they fit just right. Figures. (I'd rather be 105, but that's not really happening anytime soon.) But they don't lay smooth under the tank, and I get self-conscious about my belly. Ugh.

My lower back aches a little during RG BB Rows so I straighten up slightly. I do Seated One-Arm Cable Rows for the stretch, and a little bicep toning. I have enough time for some basic planks, but I'm cold by the time I get to the Mat Stretch. I used to add another set of cardio to the end of my workouts just to warm up enough for stretching. I'm tempted to do that again. But I already spend too much time at the gym. Ugh.

Slight Variations

Even though I know Mondays tend to be busy, I was still a bit surprised at how crowded the gym was. I overhear people talking about going away for Spring break or Easter vacation. We're not going anywhere. My son only has a long weekend to look forward to. He says he would've much preferred to go to school during the winter and have an actual week-long vacation the first week of April. I do have an Easter basket ready though. I'll just have to sneak it into his room when he's sleeping.

All the cross-trainers are busy so I get on one of the ellipticals and hit Program 1. The gal two machines over is pedaling but hasn't activated any programs so I'm not sure how much that pedaling is worth. Later she gets on the erg, but only for a few minutes. Perhaps she's just trying things out? I'm wearing another new cheap tank from Old Navy®. It's billowy like a pillowcase, but that doesn't bother me. It's my old iPod Nano, clipped to the non-existent waistband of my most-comfy yoga pants that I keep fiddling with. The pants, long discontinued by Title Nine® (probably because the fabric tended to really hold on to sweaty stinky smells even after being laundered) is made from a wonderfully soft, non-clingy material, but lacks waistband structure. So anything clipped to it tends to flop over and eventually slide off. Ugh. But the pants don't smell anymore. So there's that...

There's a fellow at the Smith so I take my time with my Core warm up. I'm happy that I'm able to take advantage of having "rested my elbows" over the weekend, and get a few more pull ups. Yaaay me! I do feel a bit bloated though and I'm wondering if I'm merely perceiving yesterday's meal of smoked pork butt as being a tad too salty, or if it really is too salty. My hubs used his smoker this weekend, but substituted charcoal briquettes for lump hardwood. The lump is harder to control. But after half a day and the briquettes themselves being finicky, my hubs opted to finish the butt in the oven for a few hours. He absolutely loves the marinade injector and wonders why he never tried it before. He also adjusted the dry rub seasoning. The pork was still delicious, and so exciting that he once again forgot to take any photos of it. My son inhaled a good pound and a half of it fresh off the bone, and went to bed happy. Later today, the gym scale tells me 111.6 lbs. It could've been worse!

The Smith is free by the time I'm actually ready. I'm toying with changing my reps, but I'm not quite there yet. Many strength programs suggest 5 reps per set. But, instead of going for 3 sets of 5 reps, I still hit 12. And 25. But I'm braver with the DB shoulder super set and only grab a pair of 25s. I figure my elbows should be able to handle 25 lbs if I cut my reps down. But how far down? I stop at 8 reps because that seems reasonable. But by the 3rd set, I want to see if I can handle a few more and stop at 10. And then I decide to do a 4th set. Well, that's a change, too. I wonder if I'll be sore tomorrow? Probably not... But 25 lbs doesn't give me the best form. Does it matter? Will it eventually ruin my elbows and forearms, my weak links? Don't know yet.

I also opt to do V-bar cable press downs for triceps instead of Rip Skulls. The gym has emptied out a bit, but I'm not in the mood to unclip my hair, and worry about my earphone wires sticking to my throat. I still haven't ordered replacement bluetooth earbuds yet. They're in my Amazon shopping cart along with the sewing machine, and bottles of Amlactin® skin cream. My hubs doesn't thinks I should get the sewing machine: just take my pants to the tailor. We're trying to de-clutter the house, but you wouldn't know it from all the things my hubs orders and accumulates. We're actually contemplating getting a shed just to keep all the camping gear in an organized fashion because our house is eternally too small, and until he sorts out the garage, there's barely any room for 3 people with interests, and an old dog.

Today I took a practically brand-new tea set to the local humane society thrift shop as a donation. Because my hubs, who got into this Asian tea thing a few years ago, suddenly decided he wasn't into it anymore after buying a Yixing ceremonial tea set. Ugh. The box has been sitting in the living room forever, and finally he put it into a big black trash bag to toss away. Instead, I put it in the back of my car, along with a good 3 dozen white hand towels I cleaned out of my bathroom linen closet. Those are going to the humane society itself because they can always use towels. And where did all these towels come from? From all the hotels my hubs stays at. A hand towel or two always finds itself in his laundry bag. Ugh.

My hubs is okay with donations to the humane society. I used to take bags and bags of clothes to Good Will, but he's not happy with "undeserving undesirables" getting his cast-offs. (Never mind that the chairman of Good Will Industries is one of the highest paid CEOs of all non-profit corporations.) But when I went there a few weeks ago, there were very few bags of donated clothes in the receiving area. Probably a consequence of the new tax laws that do away with charitable donations as a deductible. When I donated my old car, the one with the broken rear axle, my hubs insisted that it was going to wind up in the Middle East being driven by anti-American terrorists. Like that plumber who saw his old van on news footage (click here for the story). But I really wanted to get the $500 tax deduction for the car instead of having to pay $500 to have someone take it away...

My husband is always angry about other people profitting off his discards. So he's not very compliant with recycling either. I'm not militant, but I at least try. It's not that he's a bad person. He's just tired of everyone trying to make him feel guilty for everything. I admit that I'm a bit weary of it too, and have to selectively tune-out the world. Everyone's shilling for something. Listen to every heart-breaking story pleading for monthly donations and you'll be poor, and mad, in no time.

I did make good use of a Gerber® folding hand saw my hubs showed me. There's a narrow pot-hole strewn road that connects the back parking area of a Catholic school with the driveway of the kung fu school. The kung fu school is on a road perpendicular to the main road. There's a traffic light at the intersection. But no Left Turn signal. Oncoming traffic is relentless with cars coming directly off the highway. I used to get very stressed sitting at that light, waiting for an opportune moment to turn left and not get T-boned. The lady who runs the kung fu school told me to use the little back road behind the Catholic school, and I have been. Until last Tuesday when a small tree fell across it. Small as in a sapling about as thick as my upper arm, which is 13" around. So that's about a 4" diameter and high enough off the ground to smash your windshield if you tried to drive through it.

Last week, I had to back out of the road and sit in traffic to make the horrible left turn. The next time, I actually remembered to bring the folding saw, and while my son scampered through the woods to get to class on time, I put on my sunglasses and fleece winter gloves and proceeded to saw. It took about 15 minutes to hit both ends. I was hoping that once I cut the far end, the tree would spring up and out of the way, but it'd been down too long. That's a saw I'm keeping in my Go Bag.

What's In A Number

I ate a lot of kale last night with some leftover pork. The pork's not as good as when freshly carved off the bone after cooking for 14 hours. It needs moisture. It's too salty. I toss lots of kale atop the shreds of pork to season it, and to soften the pork. The kale was great. The pork, not so much. I pan fry a few slices of under-ripe avocados and am surprised at how much better they taste: they soften and actually have flavor now! I'm sometimes over-eager to cut into an avocado, fooling myself that the slight give when I squeeze it means it's ripe. Sometimes it needs another day. You can always tell perfection because the flesh seems to peel out of the skin by itself!

This morning I ate yogurt with my vitamins: I didn't want to run out of steam at the gym. And surprisingly, my old Nano iPod and wired ear buds worked very well to block ambient conversations. I still have new wireless earbuds on order at Amazon though. Prices have come down, and $20 seems reasonable. I just wish the ear buds were truly wireless so I didn't have to tangle them into my hair to keep the wire off my neck. I'm wearing one of the cheap tanks I bought from Old Navy. It's a weird pink or salmon color. Salmon, because in certain light, it gets orangey, but it's not coral. It has a racer back and trim silhouette, unlike the other tanks, which seem more billowy. Or maybe, just more. All the other tanks are gray. One has a neat cut out back, but I have a hard time photographing it at home. Today is Cardio Day so I know I'm going to be horribly sweaty. All the tanks promise stay-dry technology to keep the user cool. Right.

All the ellipticals are busy when I get to the gym, but I didn't want to start with Intervals anyway. I need to warm up on something else, so I do 15 minutes on the cross-trainer. Now that I'm nicely warm, I proceed with pull ups and push ups and basic core moves. I stretch out my hips but dropping down and my elbows are on the mat. College Soccer, a middle-age woman who looks like an ex-college jock, tries to suppress a smile. Because it's probably unexpected. And funny.
Now I can hit the elliptical, especially since they're all vacant. I only do 20 minutes. On Cardio Days, I choose three different machines. Today is cross-trainer, elliptical and step mill. I suppose I could've added the Expresso bike, but I only fit into one of the four machines, and it's occupied. I don't know how people can do the Step Mill at slow speeds. I start with 1 and click up to level 5. But after a minute I'm bored and click up one more. Level 6 is a good pace and in 15 minutes, I'm drenched and warm enough for most of the Mat Stretch.

I keep an eye on the clock because I have a doc appointment later and I don't want to be late. If anything, I'm usually 10-15 minutes early, and the doc usually runs late no matter how many or few patients are in the waiting room. My vision tests at 20/20 on the verge of 20/15. But my pressure's are unexpectedly bad: 15 and 16. When the doc does a pressure re-check, the IOPs are even worse at 19! Ugh. Looks like I'm going to have that cataract surgery after all. First I'll need to do a new Visual Field exam. Then I'll have to return for lens measurements. Finally, a friend will have to drive me to the hospital to have one eye done. Wait two weeks and then the other eye.

The doc explains that I have narrow angles, which makes this surgery more difficult. It's possible that the removal of the thickened lens will cause my iris to drop down and open the angle, allowing better fluid drainage inside my eye. Or allow more room for a micro-stent. The micro-stent would be positioned to drain into the angle. As it is now, my eyes don't seem well-suited for that type of solution. I may be forced to consider more invasive surgeries, but only if this fails. My body seems very resilient, but in this case, it's not optimal because the iridotomy and SLTs no longer provide increased drainage. And in spite of three different eye drops, my IOPs have increased. Ugh. After the cataract surgeries, I won't be able to do anything strenuous for at least a week. No lifting. Nothing that requires exertion. I guess I could do a slow jog on the elliptical and some planks... Or maybe just sit in the sauna?

Well, at least the gym scale was kinder today at 111 lbs. And I got the cargo pants from 5.11 Tactical Gear shop. (Aramark keeps emailing me sales ads to get me to buy more stuff, but the stuff I just ordered hasn't arrived yet, so that's truly annoying. I hope their pants fit because they charge a restocking fee on returns. Ugh.) The summer weight khaki cargo pants (size 2 unhemmed) fit great, with just 8" of extra fabric that will need to be cut off. The heavier charcoal pants (size 4 regular) fit fine as well, but with more belly room (good for layering in the winter), and only 3.5" to remove off the legs. Now I know what size I wear, at least in this brand.

A friend recommended LA Police Gear and I checked out their website. It looks as if they might stock my size, but hard to tell. Even though I checked off Inseam 28/Waist 28 in the Search function, the Men's sizes are more or less Small/Short vs Medium/Reg, etc. Which leaves me guessing as to just what size the items really are. There are women's pants, but the sizing chart only refers to waist size. A size 0 is 29.5", and there's no hip size. There's also nothing shorter than regular, which is about 30". It gets longer the bigger the waist size. I'm a little hesitant to order a size 0-regular when I'm wearing a 2 or 4 elsewhere... I'm wondering how the Aramark pants will fit. I hope they fit. Regardless, they all need to be hemmed.

Time to Get Serious. Again.

As far as we're all concerned up here, Nor'easter Toby was a bust. No snow until 7 pm which meant a loss of a school day for no good reason. There was a 2-hr delay this morning, which gave me ample time to clear the 4-6 inches of overnight snow off my car, driveway and walkway. Of course, with temps rising to the mid-40s, most of that snow is melted now. The delay did not, however, give me enough time to eat breakfast because once I had driven my son down the hill to the school bus stop, I figure I'd just keep going, and get to the gym early. The roads were clear, but slushy, and my son was wearing sneakers because gym class today, wearing his backpack with the school-issued chrome book and assorted textbooks, and carrying both his viola and binder.

The gym was relatively empty and I was surprised. I heard other parents complain about 3-hr delays this morning, causing them to miss their exercise classes. It doesn't actually register with me what missing breakfast means until later in the day when I'm having trouble focusing on my workout. It's not that I'm tired, but I feel less energetic, as if there'd been no caffeine in my morning brew. My day already sucks because the Tire Pressure sensor lit up as I drove to the gym. Ugh. Now I'm forced to make a pit stop at the Valvoline just to get my pressures checked. I'll do that later...

Three out of four ellipticals are occupied by a very chatty group of women, so I opt not to ascend that last machine. Even with music at full blast, I'd still be able to hear every word of their inane conversation. I get on the new cross-trainer instead. It's okay. I only dislike it now because neither my phone nor my water bottle fit into the assigned spaces. Ironic that I, one of the smallest people here at the gym, probably have the biggest damn phone (6+) and water bottle (1.5 liters). Warm up completed and I'm standing in front of the Nexersys debating whether to go with 3 rounds of Sparring or not. I go with Not. Because I don't have the energy. Ugh. This is the last time I skip breakfast!

Instead, I do the old routine of 7 rounds Beginner Follow Me, then 7 rounds of Intermediate Follow Me. I don't actually get sweaty until round 7 of the first set. I do blank the machine several times, and decide to randomly punch and jab anyway, because honestly, what do I have to lose? Before the last round of the last set is over, my headphones start to sputter. And then they die. Ugh. I hit the button and the lovely lady voice purrs, "Power off." My iPod works fine. It's the bluetooth headphones that have suddenly lost their bluetooth ability. They still power on and off, but don't connect to anything. It's too late in my workout to retrieve wired headphones so I do my pull ups and Mat Stretch to the ambient gym music which is called Throwback Thursdays. Still, some nice tunes. I catch Billy Idol's Catch My Fall in the background. But I feel very weak doing pull ups, and can only count 23 full ones. The last 3 reps are a struggle just to get my nose past the bar. Ugh.

The gym scale is not kind either, telling me that I'm getting fat at 113 lbs. Double ugh. You know you're gaining belly fat when there's more depth to your navel than usual. Seriously. I haven't logged my food into My Fitness Pal since we lost power two weeks ago. Time to start again, and become more accountable. Again. I get home and my glaucoma doc needs to reschedule my appt because she's taking her mom to the oncologist. Uh oh. Her office reschedules me for tomorrow afternoon. Well, at least I can get a workout in beforehand. I think I need to do more cardio...

Growing in All the Wrong Places

Nor'easter Toby is due Wednesday morning. At least we'll finally have kung fu and Scouts because Tuesday's looking pretty good. This will be the 4th nor'easter in 4 weeks. All within the month of March. Not looking like the month is going out like a Baa Baa... but we've still got another week left so who knows? So far, Toby is a bust with just a few flurries.

I finally get to the gym around noon and it's not very busy. Classes are done and the HS kids haven't arrived yet. I get on the elliptical for a brief 20 minutes just to warm up. Then a few pull ups. These feel kind of hard this week. Not enough sleep is my daily mantra. I skip core, figuring I'll get to it later if I have time. After all, I did that yesterday. The Smith is vacant, and all the plates are beautifully racked. That always makes my OCD happy. I figure I can pull a wee bit heavier today since I cut 10 min out of my cardio. Seriously.
Wonder when they'll patch

I do manage to pull 170 for a few reps. I'm not gasping for air when I'm done, so I know I could've done more. I hate to admit it, but I am tired. Today, I put my ego aside and actually cut my weight on RG BB Rows just so I can keep my back at the proper angle. At higher weights, my lower back gets finicky, forcing me to stand closer to 30° than 45°. This actually works the traps more than I'd like because I'm more vertical. Rows aren't suppose to be shrugs, not that it's hurting me. Then just a few sets at the Seated Cable Row. There are newbies in the gym, guys I don't recognize. A "Heckle and Jeckle" pair (am I dating myself with this reference?) but one short and extremely muscular, and his buddy taller with a baseball cap. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I think the taller one keeps glancing over and surreptitiously circling. I'm good at ignoring people, but I'm totally aware of their presence.

I took my measurements earlier and find my hips are bigger. No wonder some of my pants are uncomfortable! I know I haven't been eating all that well (or should I say too well), but I wonder if the RDLs are adding size to my butt. Ugh. Nah, it's probably my dietary habits. But I do need new pants! I've been sorely frustrated trying to find real pockets on clothing for petite women.

I'm still wearing my beat up, patched-with-duct-tape down coat even though I have newer versions for winter, solely because newer models have fewer pockets and the ones provided are too small to be useful for anything except holding gloves. So I'm on the hunt for a reasonably priced down coat with real pockets, in the old utilitarian style of the 70s when everyone (except my family because my mom wanted us to have only fashionable clothes) wore a big blue or olive green, fur-lined hooded army-style parka. What do I keep in my coat pockets besides my gloves, and tissues? Cell phone, lip balm, flashlight, doggy poop bags, car keys, pocket knife... nice to have a place to put sunglasses too.

My other quest is for women's pants with actual cargo pockets. Yes, again with the pockets. Google women's cargo pants and assortment of retailers pop up, but none of them actually carry that elusive item. Instead, you get images of cute drawstring pants with patch pockets you might wear walking barefoot along a beach. Ugh. I wind up browsing through Aramark®, maker of uniforms for men and women and order some pants as a test. (Click here to visit their online store.) My hubs suggests a company called 5.11 which is where he gets his monstrously useful cargo pants. The website 5.11 redirects to a company called Tactical Gear (click here), which also supplies utilitarian clothes for both men and women. I'm not quite of my size in these brands so I have to guess. Some styles allow me to order unhemmed pants.

I contemplate buying a portable sewing machine so I won't have to go to the tailor all the time. The tailor's a nice Syrian woman, but so depressed that I don't actually want to visit her because I suspect I make her feel worse. She used to live on my road but her house fell into foreclosure, and I know the new family who has moved in.

My hubs thinks it's silly, but the sewing machine, if I can learn how to use a basic model, might be practical, although I don't know what else I'd use it for. Maybe mending stuff that isn't easily fixed hand-sewn? My son learned sewing basics last term and came home with a small pillow. My gran had worked in a pajama factory, and owned a huge black Singer with gold lettering. I took basic sewing in 6th grade, but because I was forced to make something I hated and knew I'd never wear, I didn't pay as much attention as I should have. Machines have changed a lot! Now they come with programs! Like cars, even the basic model relies on computer chips. Oh well, it's not like I'm a Luddite...  And a highly recommended model comes with a convenient carry/storage case. Dare I take the plunge? I'm still debating with myself. Meanwhile, several pairs of pants are on their way. I may wind up sending them all back, or not. Depends on how they fit.

Chili done in 45 minutes
We were busy all weekend and briefly forgot that it was St Patrick's Day. We celebrated my birthday Friday night with short ribs at Char steakhouse (my son had his usual NY strip steak, truffle oil mac and cheese, and a side of asparagus). Saturday, my hubs got down to seasoning his newly acquired Dutch oven, and then cooking chili (meatloaf mix, can of crushed tomatoes, dried spices) from a recipe we got from a University of Scouting course called Dutch Oven Magic. That turned out really well. And spicy. My son and I ate our chili over mac 'n cheese, while my hubs ate his without any added carbs.

Sunday was a different story. My hubs decided to try smoking a 9 lb picnic pork but got to the prep a bit late. So the brined meat didn't go into the smoker until 11 am. He injected a mix of brine and apple juice into the meat, and poured some into a pan to add steam. The charcoal was hard to manage, and we wondered how the meat would get to temp (210F) if the smoker was only suppose to reach 200F. By 10 pm the pork was only reading 180F. Time to put it in the oven at 225F and set the alarm on the thermometer once it reached 210. It got to 216F by 1 am. My son had given up and gone to bed by then, but my hubs and I were still patiently awaiting porky results. It was well worth it, and hands down the best pork he's ever cooked. Slightly briny, smokey, juicy and glistening, the meat was delicious. He's determined to try this again, just to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

Today was a Push Day although I wasn't entirely certain I'd be able to get on the Smith when I was ready. So, I always have a back-up plan, which is just do core, or more cardio. After 30 minutes on the new cross-trainer, I was warm enough for pull ups, push ups and core. The fellow on the Smith had just finished, and all the plates were nicely re-racked. Yaaay! What was new was the hole in the wall just under the mirror, as if someone had accidentally lost control of an errant dumbbell or kettle bell. Or maybe it wasn't accidental. I got my Inclined presses done and moved on to the DB super sets. Then a few Rip Skulls before finishing Mat Stretch. Under my Golds Gym tank, I'm wearing the new Tahari Sports® bra, the boring grey and navy one I bought last week. I'm really happy that not only do I not need to keep tugging it down, I don't have to constantly adjust the straps either. Normally I'm leery of wide straps because they can cut into my neck, but these don't. Winner! Fitting rooms can only tell you how a sports bra will fit in static positions. Nothing quite like doing pull ups and push ups to really test how a bra fits. This one passes!

Samosa cut open
I'm meeting a friend for her birthday lunch at a new local "curry and Caribbean joint" we've been curious to try. I'm a bit wary as Mondays aren't usually good days for restaurants. Food tends to be old at the beginning of the week, leftover from busier weekends. We're the first people to be seated for lunch. It's a bright, nicely decorated little place on a side street. The service is friendly, but really slow. It's a good thing neither of us is in a hurry to be anywhere. While we wait for appetizers, a couple comes in with a very cranky baby who screams and fusses. My friend hopes she won't have to spend her birthday lunch listening to this, but because the couple are sitting at the bar with a couple of beers, I surmise they're waiting for their take-out to be ready. It's 1:30 pm and a bit early for a Monday beer, but maybe it's the stress of having a cranky baby? We have a spicy chai tea and the Mixed Vegetable Platter, a combination of shaheena (chickpea & spinach fritter), pholourie (Trinidadian chickpea fritter) & vegetable samosa (turnover stuffed with potato & peas). There is enough to share but we've each ordered a platter, so there will be doggy bags.

Eventually, the server brings white rice with a smattering of mushy peas and carrots atop, in typical Indian fashion. I order the Stew Lamb, which is a Caribbean dish. My friend orders a chicken dish in a red sauce, but she decides it's too salty. My lamb is lukewarm. At least her dish is hot. Both meats are chewy, and not the pleasant tender texture stew meats should be. There is an olive green dish of lentils as well. It's not daal, the tasty yellow lentil slurry, but something more akin to a lentil/split pea soup. A basket of naan (triangular puffed bread) arrives late to the table. It is deliciously buttery and clearly the best item on the table. The dessert of gajar halwah (warm shredded carrot pudding) is actually also quite tasty but very sweet.

I've mentioned to the hostess that it's my friend's birthday, so she comes out with a lit candle atop what looks like a frozen mango cupcake. It's difficult to slice, and some of it goes skittering across the table. By the time we're ready to leave, a few more diners have come in. I'm not sure I'd come back here though...

One Size Can Vary Greatly

Dressing
room lighting
After I got the laundry and dishes sorted, and my gym gear packed, I drove up to the Home Depot to pick up charcoal and salt for the water softener. My hubs and I had taken a Scout course on Dutch Oven cooking and my hubs was so excited by it that he immediately purchased one on Amazon. Now we just have to season it, and get some charcoal briquettes. I haven't used charcoal briquettes in over 20 years so like an old dog who can see a new staircase but doesn't acknowledge its existence (yes, that was one of my dogs), I walked right by the bags of Kingsford and bought two bags of the Royal Oak lump charcoal. Because that's what we normally use. But Scout Dutch oven cooking is all about putting the right number of briquettes on and under the cast iron pot, so....

My son is at that age where half his clothes don't fit him anymore. Like underwear. I like to buy him colorful cotton briefs because whites are boring, and show stains too easily. But I'll be dammed if I can find anything other than boxer-briefs or boxers. My son won't wear boxers, and not boxer-briefs because he's got sizeable thighs (like his mom). I go to three different stores, and if they have regular briefs, they are in monstrously large sizes. Ugh. While I'm at Marshalls, I see a rack of sports bras and grab a few to try on. Clothes wear out and mine are no exception. Marshall's has the best prices for these items, averaging $10 give or take, vs. the ridiculously expensive $30-$70 per item at sports retailers. All the bras are size L from different brands. The only S size is a bright neon orange tank, because I'm that weird body who wears both L and S simultaneously.

left to right: neon tank, navy bra and gray/navy bra, stars bra, puffy bra/strappy bra,
The S tank is the first to go on the discard pile. While I like the color, there are too many seams and the fabric is too sheer for my liking. It doesn't look that way in the photo, but in real life, I can see my bra through the tank, and that's not me. Even though all the bras are size L, they all fit differently. I'm surprised at the ones that fit well and comfortably, one boring solid navy and one gray/navy piece. I like the cute B&W stars and stripes (made in Australia!) but the band is a tad too big. You can see how it gaps at the side. But it's really comfortable and well-made and I opt to keep it anyway, figuring I can wear it under something heavier than a gym tank. Then there are the losers: a strappy black number with weird cutouts across the back. It's too tight and the straps don't have enough give to them. The next item is really cute, but there's something odd about the bust area. The pads are too puffy and make me look like I've gone up 3 cup sizes. It's not the right bra for me. Experiences like this are why brick and mortar stores will never truly disappear. There are certain things you really need to try on. Like bras. And shoes.

Post-workout
I get to the gym by noon. It's Cardio Day so I reluctantly climb onto the elliptical for Intervals. But only 20 minutes. I'm a bit stiff from yesterday and my legs take a long while to loosen up. I probably should've started with a different piece of equipment! Oh well... Right afterwards, I hop on the Step Mill for 15 minutes. Now I'm really starting to bust a sweat! Then I'm back across the gym to the Expresso bikes. The one bike that adjusts down to my size is the closest to the front door so every now and then, as people are entering or exiting, I get a chilly breeze. I choose a new ride called Titan Time because it's a short distance at 1.75 miles, and has weird graphics of aliens and spaceships.

What I don't realize until I'm in the thick of it, is that there are portions of this ride where the grade goes up to 17% and I'm pedaling as hard as I can. I opt to close the gap between me and the screen pacer, from 75 to 55 meters. Eventually I pass "him" on the course, and by the time I'm finished, he's several yards behind me. I'm done in a little over 10 minutes, and the computer program seems surprised and congratulates me on my excellent time. Of course, I haven't logged in so there's no record of my ride, but that's okay. I'm perfectly happy being anonymous.

My hubs is taking us out to dinner tonight to celebrate my birthday belatedly. We're going to Char, a local steakhouse we frequent on special occasions. They have short ribs on the menu! I don't cook short ribs so that's what I'm ordering! My son loves their truffle oil mac and cheese. My hubs is still gamely eating low/no carbs, but he's had to cut back on calories and protein. So, it's basically a fat-based diet that is suppose to help maintain blood sugar levels. I'm curious enough to read up on it, but since I have a lot of issues digesting fatty foods, this type of eating isn't for me. The cops will be out in force tonight and tomorrow because the St Pat's holiday weekend is notorious for drunken behaviors. At least my hubs is responsible enough to do his drinking safely at home, although I'm sure he'll have a glass of white with dinner.

Ides of March Quickie Post

I've got too much to do today to post much for yesterday's workout, but I DID whack the machine for 14 rounds, and managed to elicit a stern You Are Hitting Too Hard warning screen from a few powerful Cross blows. The warning always comes up when I go to block a punch during Sparring rounds, but not usually during the Follow Me, so that's new. Of course, the stats that show Power state that I'm not really punching very hard at all... Go figure. And the machine still has the wrong date, but at least the right number of rounds...

Happy Pi Day

It's my birthday so I agreed to meet a friend for lunch this afternoon at Florrie Kaye's Tea Room and Gifts. Of course, I'd be coming from the gym, with my wet hair clipped to the back of my head in a damp bun, and suitably under-dressed in a not-quite-grunge fashion. I'm not wearing jeans and flannel with a knit hat. No, I'm wearing black LLBean knit pants, a chamois shirt with a matching henley underneath, and my winter fleece hat which is the only hat deep enough to fit on my head when I've got my hair tied up. It's warm inside so I put the hat in my purse. Unexpectedly, I recognize a few people sitting at other tables including the Judge that comes to all our Boy Scout events. It's a tiny venue but surprisingly well-attended!

My friend orders the High Tea and I go with the other option, the option with real portions of real food. Because I'm not afraid to eat. She gets a tiny side salad and a teacup of lovely mushroom soup. I get an actual mug of soup. It's the best mushroom soup I've ever had, thick with pureed mushrooms in a probable cream base. There's actual chunks of 'shrooms in it as well. I'm probably going to regret eating this because I'm lactose-intolerant, but I eat it anyway. A savory cheddar scone with a pat of butter accompanies the soup. We both get monster pots of tea. She orders a black tea mix called Paris that has strong vanilla undertones. I get ginger oolong. For the main course, my friend gets the three-tiered finger sandwich assortment with the cheddar scone on top, bacon jam and crudites in the center, and three pairs of finger sandwiches at the base. The bacon jam tastes like smokey ham glaze turned into a chutney with no bite. It's smokey and very sweet. I have turkey panini with a side of gently pickled cucumber slices. The sandwich, which is delicious, contains stuffing and cranberries.

Dessert gives us a choice of a chocolate mousse, a tart with ice cream, or assorted pastries. We both order the pastries. Except I eat all of mine. And she opts to take most of hers home in a doggy bag to eat for dinner tonight. Mind you, she's several inches taller than I am, and heavier. But she's also over a dozen years older, and not as active as I am. So she eats a lot less. I should probably eat less too. But today's my birthday and I don't want to. (As it is, I take half the panini home and my son eats it as an after-school snack.) The Easter Bunny also made an appearance, which was unexpected, but ultimately elicited giggles and guffaws. In the back, there's a gift shop filled with porcelain tea sets, fluffy baby gifts, candles, and countless items depicting the Royal Family.

At the gym, I'm cognizant of the day's time constraints so I only do 20 minutes on the elliptical. Then a quick set of pull ups before sprinting over to the Smith. Some bozo has left 45 lb plates on the bar and walked away. Figures. I'll use them, but not just yet. I have to check last week's entries to remember just when I was planning to put the 45s on. I do fewer sets this week, but in bigger increments. I reverse the order of the RG BB Rows to make them into drop sets, and totally skip anything else so I'll have time for Core. Since I'm already on the Mat, I do the Mat Stretch. Then just enough time to change and shower!

Maybe I'll whack the machine tomorrow. The Town's Parks & Recreation Dept offers summer camp, as well as various sports and activities for residents. But this is the first time I've ever seen Jeet Kune Do offered. It's two hours on a Saturday afternoon for 6 weeks. The park is a mere quarter mile from my house and I've long wanted to take a martial arts class. Jeet Kune Do was made famous by Bruce Lee. When I log on to register, I read that participants must supply their own MMA gloves. That's not in the catalogue course description! Luckily, I have gloves. But I wonder how many people will be swayed one way or the other by that one little mention? Should be interesting if enough people sign up for there to be an actual class. I wonder how many of them will be teenage boys. It's for people 15 yrs and up so even my son wouldn't be able to participate. But they didn't give a size restriction, so I guess I'll see!

Meanwhile, local news begins fear-mongering anew with the proclamation of another nor'easter forming before Spring, which is in roughly a week. Oh joy...

Alphabetical Confusion

I had to check several websites before I found what I was looking for: the reason why we're currently experiencing Winter Storm Skylar after storms Riley and Quinn. Storms are named alphabetically, so Q, R and S to follow. However, WS Quinn apparently formed before Riley did, even though we experienced it later...

Click here for the link to the explanatory website...

Meanwhile, school was scheduled for a 3-hour delay at 5 am. Which then became a complete cancellation of the day. Hoping there's school tomorrow! It's Pi Day! And my birthday...

I'm planning to hit the gym (naturally), then meet a friend to check out a new local shop: Florrie Kaye's Tea Room and Gifts. Click here for their website. Not only do they have assorted teas and tea pots, and Brit memorabilia, but they also serve lunch in a high tea fashion. I doubt if I'll be properly dressed, but it'll be a fun and different experience. It was either that or check out the fairly new Curry House a few roads further down. Click here to check them out.

It's 2:05 pm and still snowing... Ugh. Lovely heavy, wet snow! But we're not getting the brunt of it. Places that escaped WS Quinn with just wind and rain are getting snow galore. Just glad it's not us again. Of course, there's still shoveling... And I still need to replace the generator, which, because it's a stand alone unit, will require me to contact the propane company as well as the town. Ugh.

Scaremongering

With back-to-back nor'easters hitting within days of each other, we're a bit weary of all the storm hype. Yes, Winter Storm Quinn was definitely worse than Riley because of the massive amounts of heavy wet snow. This new storm promises less snow, less wind. But it's wise to still be cautious. Some of us are suffering from winter storm fatigue, and sensationalistic news headlines just cause us to click to another page. Warm temps (40+F) have melted a lot of the icy white stuff, but more than half still stands tall in mountainous banks and drifts. It was 20F when I took the dog out this morning. The birds can still walk up to the feeder on top of all the snow we cleared out of the driveway and walkway. Although we've recovered or replaced most of the food we put in coolers outside, I'm certain there's a bag of broccoli lost in a snowbank somewhere.

I get to the gym after dropping off bags of clothes and shoes and assorted items at Good Will and buying a bag of dog food for the pup. Even though I give him turkey cold cuts with his morning Metacam (for his gimpy arthritic hind legs), he still gets a cup of Iams dry dog kibble (moistened with water) mixed with cooked ground turkey and rice. Or oatmeal. If he had his way, he'd live on cold cuts and ciabatta bread. Seriously. Sometimes when he's not feeling well, he'll refuse the bread unless it's toasted. Spoiled much? Well, he's 15...

Amazing what a
little eyeliner can do!
The gym isn't very crowded and I hop on the new cross-trainer for 30 minutes. It's definitely harder than the old one I favored. These newer ones really make me feel my quads as I pedal. Just what I need... bigger quads. Kidding. I certainly don't need bigger legs. Then pull ups. My right shoulder twinges just a tiny bit. It's been relatively pain-free but snow shoveling has definitely been hard on that joint. I do push ups and all my core stuff... The Smith is free. Yaaaay! Inclined presses only really bother the meaty part of my palms where my thumbs insert. It's the weight causing the Reynaud's to flare up. Parts of my hands go numb until I shake them out. This is yet another reason I prefer the Smith: no worries about using a thumbless grip while pressing.

I skip the Barbell superset and go right to DB superset. And then I skip Rip Skulls and do V-bar Cable Press downs. Because I haven't done them in a long while, and since snow is forecast for tonight into tomorrow, I don't want to be too tired to shovel. Seriously. I'm still recovering from spending the Saturday at Scouting University during the day, and at my son's kung fu school New Year's fundraiser banquet. Then marching in the St. Pat's parade with other Boy Scouts on Sunday. Daylight savings changeover had me wondering why I was walking the dog in the dark this morning. But at least it was light out at the bus stop. Whew!

I think I prefer shoveling to all this stuff... but I don't miss having no hot water or electric for the microwave and toaster. It's the little things that make life enjoyable!

Summer's Gonna Be Unbearable

It was already near 60F when I woke up this morning. Already too freakin' hot! Dogs were panting after a few quick romps through the par...
