Moving Through, Not Around

Sweeping snow is almost as taxing as shoveling. It's certainly a warm up. I half expected the school's to post a two-hour delay, but the phone is silent this morning. Two other towns have delays, but not ours. If I don't clear the driveway, it'll be treacherous tonight when we take the dog for a walk. I sweep and then salt. Hmmm. I could use with another bag of salt even though I have 50 lbs of the stuff inside the house. But I like to be prepared. I'm not happy with the -6F forecast for later this week. It means I need to bring more firewood inside.

Sciatica persists but is not debilitating. Yet. Not happy about the slow creep of my weight. My pants feel too tight in the hip and thighs. Yep, time to cut out the sangria and apple ale, and probably even the oatmeal. Back to basics like Greek-style yogurt with maple syrup, and salad. Lots of salad. The sciatic pain is only noticeable when I'm trying to put my socks on, or I'm leaning on my right leg, as in pressing the accelerator when I drive. Sometimes there's a weird ache in my outside ankle or the ball of my foot. It's all the same nerve.

If I wait any longer for the sciatica to heal, I'll become a fat, dumpy old lady. Or that's how I feel. I'm turning 56 next month, but in my head, I'm already there. Back to my routine, more or less. 30 minutes on the cross-trainer leaves the front half of my right foot numb, but I know that's temporary. There's an ancient man stretching at the Cage so no hammer grip pull ups just yet. I do a round of push ups, followed by planks, then more push ups, then different planks. I want to bench at the Smith, but of course, I can't find the small bench, the bench that actually allows me to place my feet on something solid. Not the ground, but the cross-bar foot.

I'm too short to have my feet planted flat on the ground, and it's a major problem when benching heavy. I only do a few sets, dropping reps as I add weight. A hamstring spasm during heavy benching is scary, but since it almost happened last week, I'm sort of prepared. My legs are bent with my feet on the bench. I'm in the middle of a press when the hamstring muscle seizes so I immediately straighten the leg out. People don't usually bench with legs straight out. I'm sure I look odd. I keep the left leg bent for stability while I finish the set. I know I can bench heavier than 120 lbs. I've done 130 and more in the past. But I guess I have to wait until my body will let me do it.

When I get to DB Lateral Raises SuperSet with Reverse Incline Flyes, I feel weak. But I do them anyway. I've modified the Reverse Flyes so that I do 5 reps in each direction, starting with high (pointing to the anterior delt), then low (pointing toward my hips), and finishing with straight out (perpendicular to the body). That's 15 reps per set. Six sets. Pushing through exhaustion means it was mostly in my mind because obviously the body could do it.

I only do 3 sets of Rip Skulls at 40 lbs — my left elbow hurts a little during the movement and increasing the weight only increases the chance of injury. But I can use the 50 lb bar for Drag Curls. Weird. And then I do another set of pull ups, keeping my elbows bent except for the last rep. Just because I need to prove to myself that I can do it. Because I'm so damn competitive and combative by nature.

With all my joint issues, I find bent-arm pull ups spares the biceps and elbows, especially since I can do them after bicep curls. Only my hands really get tired, especially my thumbs because of how I grip the "roof bars" on the Stretch Cage. I can see some growth in my lats which is very exciting, and in my delts as well. That makes me happy. Now to shed some of this excess weight... Today the gym scale read 110.2 lbs. At least it's moving in the right direction again.

Curing What Ails You

I took yesterday off and sorted through a few big piles of paper in my house. I'm still not even close to being done. The leg is better but not cured. And not working out for three days in a row makes it harder to even think about going to the gym. But I go. And when I get there, I feel depressed. Not because I'm at the gym, but just in general. People dying everywhere. People I know, famous people, and people, kids, I don't know. There's been another teen suicide on the train tracks. It makes my heart hurt for his mother. People killing each other all over the world. The sun is shining, it's warm for February and I feel numb and hollow inside. That my leg is uncomfortable most of the time doesn't help. I cut back time on the Cross-trainer to just 15 minutes because that's where my toes go numb. I cut out the lunge stretches, and when I do my first set of hammer grip pull ups, I feel weak and sickly. It's probably because I'm not really warmed up yet.

I try not to limp when I walk, but the ache in my heel, calf and butt, although not severe, is chronic and wears at you, like a small animal gnawing on your tendons from the inside. I do push ups and planks, crunches and then wander over to the Smith machine for bench presses. I'm leery of pushing too hard because not only do I tend to slide across the bench (my tanks are too slippery), but I can feel the hamstring threatening to cramp. It's hard to concentrate on benching if you can't plant your feet and make your core solid. But I'm okay with the reps and weight I get today. I muscle through the DB Laterals superset with Reverse Incline Flyes. It makes me feel better. The 50 lb solid BB is in use, as is the EZ bar. No Drag Curls today. When I'm finished with 30 minutes on the elliptical, I feel good. Good enough to do most of a Mat Stretch, splits and all.

Tomorrow I'll whack the machine. That always makes me feel good.

Hair of the Dog That Bit You

yesterday
I'm a bit upset that my sciatic pain has become chronic and nagging. It's not horribly painful, but just enough to get my attention an awful lot. I've read that repetitive motions can make it worse. Oh, like running or pedaling on the elliptical? Well, at least I'm not seated like on an exercise bike. So maybe I'll take tomorrow off and take a lot of ibuprofen, something I'm loathe to do when I'm working out. I did it when we in Florida, and I spent a lot of time walking around, but by the end of the week, I was fine. This is going on the 2nd week now, and it's a persistent dull ache in the ball of my foot, in two of my toes that used to curl up a bit in a pesky hammertoe fashion. It's the threat of my hamstring suffering a muscle spasm when I'm on the bench to press. Ugh.

Today do a full body workout, but make concessions to my inflamed sciatic nerve. No Bird Dog planks because they really seem to make everything feel worse. I curl my knees up to my torso when I do pull ups because hanging straight also seems to exacerbate that nerve. Pedaling on the cross-trainer always makes my toes a bit numb. I don't have that issue on the elliptical. And pedaling backwards seems to make everything feel better. I've limited my stretches as well. Added some benching back into the routine, only did a set of push ups as a sort of warm up. And added Drag Curls too. Only one set of RG BB Curls though... forearms don't quite feel right lately. Of course, all on the right side.

I see a lot of regulars. The Mayor has his adolescent son, a skinny blonde kid, trailing after him. At the Cage, an elderly couple walk up to me and the man says with a smile, "Can I do that?" "Do what?" "Get my leg up over my head?" "Sure, go ahead," I say to him, looking a bit perplexed. "Oh I don't think so," he says cheerfully. Well, okay now... I guess they're just making conversation?

I'm going to take tomorrow off because I have things to do, like pick up the wood rack that the stray cat has toppled over. It's full of wood, but it's only a half rack. However, that's likely to take some time. That'll be my workout for tomorrw. That and scrubbing the kitchen, bathroom... all those mundane household chores that need to get done...

NSAIDs Are Making Me Fat

Yesterday I stopped taking the daily dose of NSAIDs that I've been using to tolerate the discomfort from my sciatica. For weeks my sciat...
