Aging isn't Gradual

Today
Aging isn't graceful and it's certainly not gradual. It's more like landings between floors on a descent towards the basement. I used to think that decline was slow and imperceptible until it's suddenly noticed. My experience has been otherwise. Whenever I administer my glaucoma drops, I blink for a few minutes to get the liquid out of my eye lashes and dispensed properly. Not long after my 56th birthday, the muscles surrounding my eyes and lids felt stiff. I was having trouble blinking. It wasn't merely that my eyes felt dry (a side effect of the drops) but that the muscles themselves had lost their flexibility and resilience.  I've since somewhat recovered, but not without noticing an odd discolored crease in the inner corner of my left eye. The skin is drooping a little. Sigh.

Wrinkles, eyelids and stiffened muscles. My eyes sockets are more hollow than they used to be. Asians and blacks have more subcutaneous fat which makes us appear to age slower. Because what makes everyone look old is having thin, hanging skin.

But what's the space between your fingernails and your fingers? I've noticed that it's more difficult to trim my nails these days because my flesh seems to be growing in places it never has before. My mother had this problem when I went to visit her while she was ailing. I tried to trim her nails but couldn't because of the cuticle-like flesh between her painted nails and the tips of her fingers. I thought it was because she was in her late 60s. I'm not even in my late 50s. Yet. I don't remember m grandmother having this issue, but she was able to care for herself well into her 80s.

Frequent nocturnal indigestion and Terra Chips? I love these chips, but lately I'm waking up with heartburn. I don't do well with high-fat foods so maybe it IS the chips. The only way to know is to stop eating them and see. Is this neck rash really psoriasis? It's gotten much worse. I find my baby fine hair really irritating as just a strand brushes against my throat, making the skin sting and itch. My neck has red streaks now, from all the scratching. It's not normal itching, not like an insect bite. I find an old tube of fluocinonide cream and have a vague recollection that this is a super-hydrocortisone, good for rashes and itching. I look it up and am gratified to see that it's prescribed for allergic reactions, eczema and psoriasis. But is this toe rash athlete's foot? It doesn't behave or look like it, but I do find an antifungal in the bathroom.

All this so I don't have to make an appointment with a dermatologist. My last visit with one was quite disappointing. It seemed he wanted something exotic to diagnose and my dry, itchy flaky skin wasn't exciting enough. The cream he suggested was useless. I'll stick to the lactic acid brands -- at least they work. And because I'm still trying to figure out how to pay for the deductible portion of last year's endoscopy (which showed that I didn't have gallstones), I'm leery of incurring any more medical fees. Because since 'bamacare was enacted, our health insurance doesn't cover squat but costs twice as much.

It's been months but I can't shake the heaviness in my chest. It's not physiological, but emotional. It's the weight of depression. Not a deep overwhelming despair, but something small and very dense, lying in the center like an anchor. It's replaced the wild anxiety I sometimes suffer from, but I can't really say that it's any better. It's not dread. More of a persistent sadness that underlies everything. It's the state of the world, and the loss of people both personal and iconic, the realization that the world might not be a better place for my son but a worse one when he reaches adulthood. He's at the age where I have to start letting go, first to Boy Scout camp, and eventually as he matures. I know we'll always be close though, the way mothers and only sons are.

Today is a Push Day, mostly. I try variations on push ups today and concentrate on proper form. Needless to say, I don't get many reps. T-push ups are always a good challenge so I start with those and intersperse planks between sets. I don't remember the name of the push up where you tap the opposite shoulder with your hand after you come up, but I do a set of those too. The hardest push ups are the SpiderMan, which makes you crouch down on one side, then push up, then roll to a crouch to the other side. It's hard on the shoulders and I don't like it much. I don't realize how taxed my shoulders are until I try benching. Even at the Smith machine, with its counterbalanced bar, my right shoulder twinges with moderately heavy weight. Nope. I drop the weight down and go for reps. Even Smith Inclined Benching is hard. Delts, drag curls and upright rows are next. At least I can do those!  Another set of pull ups. That last rep is almost a fail. Final set of cardio. Arms are too tired so let's  muscle through this last set of pull ups with just the back. That works for me! Tomorrow I'll whack the machine. Yep.

The Benefits of Slacking

Today's Selfie
I was more than a little worried when I got to the gym this morning. Not only was the Child Care room devoid of older kids, but the gym seemed extremely crowded. But that wasn't really why I was worried. It was because I'd taken Friday off to recuperate from the laser surgery on my right eye. I didn't fill the prescription for steroid drops because my eye didn't really bother me, other than sporadic headaches and tenderness, and a proclivity for weeping unexpectedly. But just the right eye. The doc said other patients have complained of the treated eye feeling "heavy" but that's not my experience. If anything, it feels lighter. And since it weeps more, I assume due to the increase in fluid drainage, it's not nearly as dry or itchy as the left eye now.

When I take too much time off from working out, my cardio abilities suffer. But my strength remains intact, or increases. I warm up 10 minutes on the LifeFitness cross-trainer because I have once again bought new sneakers and I want to see how they hold up. The cross-trainer is harder on my feet and ankles than the elliptical. Even though I have at least 5 pairs of gym shoes, only 2 are really comfortable: one old pair of Asics GT-2160 mesh tops sneakers and a newer pair of Asics Gel Precision TR leather trainers that I wear to kickboxing. I don't like the Ryka leather shoes because the tongue of the right foot keeps slipping to the right, and I feel short-changed on the laces. There's barely enough to tie a double-knot. The lighter Ryka Dash walking shoe has interior seams that chafe. The Saucony leather shoe is too big in the heel although it is comfortable enough to wear for casual use. I rarely wear sneakers casually though. Just not my style.

Today I have on Ryka's new Radiant Plus walking shoe with memory foam. I don't need a running shoe because I don't actually run, but I miss that wonderful cushiony feeling of walking on air when you put on a new pair of good sneakers. The laces are extra long, perhaps because the last pair of Ryka's seemed chintzy with the laces? There is good cushioning under the foot, and there aren't any noticeable interior seams. My only complaint is that my right heel tends to slide a bit, the shoe isn't as deep as the Asics in the back, but I might be able to remedy that if I thread the laces through the last eyelet on the shoe. When I drop down from hammer grip pull ups, my feet don't register the usual shock so the padding is effective. Excellent!

I'm very deliberate when I set up to do pull ups, especially in hand placement. I have to drape my palms over the bars so that my hands and not my fingers bear the load. Even then, I'm only using my hands as hooks because pull ups are ultimately done with the bigger back muscles. Stress on my elbows means that the load is being handled by the weaker arm muscle and joints and I'm doing it wrong. Today I can pull myself straight up without having to curl my body forward. I should probably add some crunches or leg lifts back into my routine.

When going for reps, speed is crucial. Knocking out 60 push ups for a set means I'm moving really fast. I slow down for the Diamond and the Dand push ups. I've increased the reps on those as well so I must be getting stronger, or at least building endurance strength. When I stop at 30 reps, it's mostly because I'm worried that I won't be able to do the next set properly. I haven't added any variations to the planks although the time keep increasing. I should toss in some side planks or knee to elbow planks just for variety. When I get to the last set of regular push ups, I just move as fast as I can go. Getting to 60 isn't as hard as it used to be!

Because I figure that doing Intervals will probably kill me (kidding) I do 30 minutes of Performance Program #1 today. Then a set of pull ups. Stretch the hamstrings, calves and hips. Finish with a last set of pull ups. No time for a complete stretch today. Tomorrow I get to whack the kickboxing machine, take my son to lunch at a local crepe cafe and then to the movies to see (again) Inside Out since it's the only kid movie showing.

NSAIDs Are Making Me Fat

Yesterday I stopped taking the daily dose of NSAIDs that I've been using to tolerate the discomfort from my sciatica. For weeks my sciat...
