I'm Secretly Competitive

I have limited time at the gym today and have to decide between Cardio or Pull Day. Either is fine with me, except I'm tired. Or maybe it's that I'm just not "feeling it" today. I've been lucky this week. I get to the gym late morning and can access the one cross-trainer that allows me to go to a zero resistance setting. It's also the one cross-trainer that has a low screen monitor so I can actually see over the machine while I'm pedaling. Of course, it's my favorite cross-trainer.

I didn't have time to stretch after my workout yesterday, and today I'm a bit sore. In weird places. Like my quads, and chest. I haven't really varied my workouts much, so this is surprising. Stretching makes all the difference! Having sore quads makes me think I'm not going to make my mileage quota today. But I'm wrong. Yes, I'm competitive. With myself. But secretly, I'm competitive with other women as well. Maybe it's not really a secret, but just the way we humans are? Women always compare themselves with other women. I assume men do the same.

While I'm on the Mat doing core stuff, I happen to look up and see a small, athletic blonde young woman doing pull ups. She's dragged a box platform to the center between the cable stations where there's an actual pull up station. She's short, but taller than I am. I know this because if I were to stand atop the platform, I still wouldn't be able to reach the bars. I only count 5 reps but I don't know how many she'd already done before I looked up. It's still more than I've seen any other woman here do.

There's a big guy on the Smith, and a different guy at the CF station so today's a Cardio Day. I'm fine with that. While I'm pedaling the elliptical, I see the short blonde at one of the Cybex machines. She has great triceps. People with nice arms have noticeable shape even with their arms dropped and relaxed. I suspect she's with her boyfriend, but I have trouble locating someone who would qualify. After the elliptical, when I know I've accumulated over 7 miles in cardio, I'm feeling pretty happy and do another stretch. Then another set of hammer grip pull ups. And instead of 26, I get to 31 reps. I don't feel my elbow or shoulder this time either. I'm pretty sure it's because there's another gal here who has muscles. Like a primal response to defending territory? Does it matter what the reasons are?

There's two pairs of DBs at the edge of the big Mat. I drop my stuff at the other end, next to the wall. There's a large woman stretching on one of the side mats. I start my stretch routine. I don't want to be sore tomorrow when I whack the Nexersys. The blonde walks over to the DBs, lays down and does a set of DB skull crushers. Then she leaves, and a big muscle head drops onto the mat and picks up the bigger DBs and does a set. That's her boyfriend! He's a whole head taller than her, and twice as wide. I'm not quite sure, though, why she's the one dragging the giant back pack from station to station. It apparently has her and her boyfriend's stuff in it. Some things never change...

Raining Outside Means Crowded Inside

Weird weather, what with the upcoming storms and all. But it promises to be sunny and hot on Sunday into Monday, which is all that matters since I plan to take my son to the InterTribal Pow Wow on Sunday, and that's all outdoors. And of course, Monday is the great Eclipse of 2017. We'll only be able to view a partial (72%) eclipse from our location, but that's still worth a Boy Scout patch.

Today it's warm and rainy. There's not much air movement so this is downright unpleasant, and very conducive to mold. There's a shocking amount of people in the gym. Fridays are usually quiet, but not today. I do my 10 minutes on a cross-trainer to get warm, then run through the shoulder routine with baby DBs, and then the green stretchy silicone band. The other kickboxing machine still has a broken Cross arm that hangs down, but at least the screen is on, which means the machine is on. I still opt to use the machine on the Left, the one that doesn't allow me to Log On, or use the Advance Level. Because I can actually see the screen on this machine. Taller people don't have this issue though.

It seems odd that the Right machine is on, with the broken Cross arm. I don't think anything has been fixed. Still, I'm happy that the machine I'm using still has a working sensor in its Cross arm. Again, the only sensor that's broken on this unit, is the Jab arm. So it doesn't register Jabs, Lead Hooks, or Lead Elbows. Oh well...

I do 7 Beginner level rounds, and then my hubs texts me. More people have been let go at his company. One was someone he was relying on for production work. Ugh. I'm just as stressed about the layoffs as he is. Today is also my husband's 50th birthday, but he can't take any time off. When he takes vacation, there is no one to cover his work, so he has twice as much work when he returns. Well, at least he got to "relax" out at Boy Scout Camp last week. I'm taking him out to a fancy local steakhouse tonight. And making my son wear a button-down shirt (under protest).

I'm well into my 3rd round at the Intermediate level and I'm breathing hard when I get a very disturbing sensation in the middle of my chest. Not quite like I'd had the wind knocked out of me, because I could breathe just fine. But pressure on my chest, like when I swallow too quickly and my esophagus spasms. I'm prone to hiccups and other annoying but benign muscle freakouts. This is something totally new: the sensation of a lump in the chest. It's disturbing enough for me to actually check my pulse, and wonder if something crazy is going on with my heart and that flaky mitral valve. I'm not dizzy or suffering from any other weird symptoms. I proceed with the rest of my rounds cautiously, wondering if I'm over-reacting. I don't want to be part of the statistic about people who ignore their symptoms and wind up dead at home!

I don't feel weak. And I'm already sweaty. It takes a good 20 minutes before the "lump" in my chest has dissipated. I feel okay mostly, so there's no reason not to proceed with the rest of my routine. I knock out a bunch of pull ups. This time I make it to 28 before my left forearm and elbow complain. Then I do most of a Mat Stretch. Stretching prevents soreness! I can honestly say that I'm not usually sore the next day from any of my workouts. Maybe I should try harder?

I did step on my scale at home this morning before coming to the gym. At least the numbers are creeping in the right direction, even if this seems to be the most painfully slow trek ever. But I'm not going to complain at 108.4 lbs and 15.4% BF. Not at my goal weight and body fat level yet. Of course, the closer you get, the harder it is to reach. That's just life.

Little Things

Yesterday, my son and I went to a beach in Connecticut with friends. We saw a lot of nature, from oversized seagull chicks bullying their parents for meals, to horseshoe crabs and snails in the surf. No lifeguards on duty, but the Nature Center happened to be open and we visited that as well. It was a beautiful day and we got there at low tide so we could walk several yards out onto the sandbars. I don't remember getting sunburned as a child, but everyone says the sun seems stronger these days. I slather on SPF 30 because it's the lightest sunscreen we have. My son's lotions are more along the lines of SPF 50 and 75 even though he tans nicely. But neither of us want to get burned.

I'm not really in the mood to work out today. Laziness. I missed yesterday and the inertia drags on. The gym parking lot is peculiarly empty. Everyone must be on vacation. Camps usually only run for 8 weeks, and there's two more weeks of summer before school starts. Still, the cross-trainer I favor is occupied so I get on one near the front door. I know I'm not going to make my best mileage. I also know that today is a cardio day.

After a set of pull ups, I do some ab core work, and push ups. I got a little dizzy this morning but that seems to have passed. Neither the pull ups or push ups bother me too much. Yaaaay! I see a few regulars, like The Mayor in his bright melon T-shirt. He doesn't have anyone to chat with today so he's unusually quiet. I head up to the ellipticals where I have my choice of machines, and I choose Program 3. Coincidentally, I've loaded an MP3 version of the Hillywood Supernatural Parody song onto my iPod. It's so happy and upbeat that it makes a perfect addition to the workout mix. I truly like it a million times better than the original Taylor Swift song. So much so that I start mouthing the lyrics as I'm pedaling as fast as I can go. It's exhilarating. I feel really happy.

I do another set of pull ups, and then a quick stretch. I have to pick up my husband's dry cleaning clear on the other side of town before rushing home to unload my car, and then drive my son to an afternoon play date. Ugh. The other mom is cleaning her kitchen as we chat so she's not offended as I start browsing my phone. On a muscle-head site I frequent, I see a video post of a body builder who is about my size. She's always very chirpy and happy. Today she's happy about doing pull ups, and her video shows her doing 5. I notice that she also keeps her elbows bent. And suddenly I'm really happy again. I feel vindicated, and legitimized. Weird, right? Especially when comments to her post say things like, "Kudos to you. Not many women can do pull ups so effortlessly." Ha! She got 5. I know it's stupid and petty of me, but damn, that feels good.

Tomorrow is Whack the Machine Day. Both machines appear to be plugged in, but one still has a broken Cross arm. Hmmmm...

Ever So Slowly

My hubs found out this morning that he had to be in Boston this weekend. Not just this weekend, but clear through until next week. This will be the first time in 20 years that we will not be watching the Super Bowl together. I'm not a big football fan. Neither is he, but he at least played football in HS. Which means he can explain all the plays and rules, because it's never quite made much sense to me. I know the basics, but certain things still confuse me, like first downs... My son has no interest whatsoever and will be watching the Puppy Bowl instead. Because who doesn't love puppies?

I don't make it to the gym until just before noon, just after my hubs leaves for work. It's eerily empty although there are a few stalwart seniors gabbing at the coffee tables. After 10 minutes on the elliptical, I'm barely warmed up. It's a good thing I like to do 5 rounds of Beginner. The right Cross Pad gets a tad floppy after just a few rounds. The Power Dig doesn't register for half the combinations, and the screen goes blank a few times for more than a few seconds. Which means I can't see what blow is called for, and miss. This impacts my Accuracy score negatively, but I don't care. I just enjoy smacking the machine.

The Intermediate level is the hardest today because of the errant programming in one of the rounds. The machine literally vomits combos in a blinding succession that's impossible to react to. I fair better in the Advance level, but the machine doesn't record my blows with any accuracy. Oh well... I don't have time to jump on the elliptical, and I go straight to pull ups before washing up. Dang! I can only get 35 today, but that's not so horrible. I do stretch out a bit because my shoulders are tight from yesterday's workout although I'm not quite sure why. It was just a body weight routine.

Tomorrow is my son's Boy Scout Court of Honor where he'll be awarded his Tenderfoot rank. It's a breakfast assembly so we have to get there at 8:30 am. Ugh. No sleeping in. And I hear there's snow and sleet in the forecast for next Tuesday. Again. Not sure why Tuesdays seem so blessed. Well, it IS winter...

Taking Gainz Where I Can

The weather people have been banging the drum about a monster storm roiling in from the Atlantic. After school activities got cancelled and we all braced ourselves for the ensuing panic. A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for 1 pm today until 7 am tomorrow. At 1 pm, it was cold and the air was damp. Occasionally, a bitter gust would shake trees. The AccuWeather phone app showed a complete disconnect between reality and forecast when it announced "wintry mix starting in 1 minute" at 3 pm. But readings for Carmel NY showed only cloudy skies with no precipitation slated until 5 pm. At 5, we saw some drizzle although my son and I had seen a rare snow flake or two throughout the day. Still, I'm glad that kung fu got cancelled and we're all home now.

I got to the gym a bit late because I wanted to drop off my Amazon return to the UPS store. I hadn't realized that as soon as UPS scans the prepaid label, Amazon is notified and I get credited for the return! For most every other time I've returned items (to a non-Amazon seller), I've had to pay for return shipping myself (LLBean offers return labels but takes $6.50 from your refund) or walk it into a store (Land's End returns at Sears in the Mall), and I usually only get an email weeks later confirming a credit to my account. Yes, Amazon has created an amazing online retail structure that is just a little scary in its efficiency.

The gym is really crowded for a Monday morning, as if school had been totally cancelled, which it wasn't. Not even early dismissal. Perhaps college boys don't have to return to school yet? I get on the wonkier cross-trainer for 30 minutes. My left hip and knee are out of sorts today. And there's a twinge in my right shoulder. I might've slept funny. Or maybe it's the weather? For the first 20 minutes, my left foot aches slightly in arch. Weird. Once it relaxes and settles, my right foot starts to tingle at the ball joint, and then my toes go numb with only 4 minutes to go. Ugh!

Once I get to the Stretch Cage, I start to question my confidence. Did I really get to 39, or just barely make it to 29? I get to 36, but struggle with the last rep. Okay, that's a half. It seems more and more likely that I actually did make it to 39 reps last week. But why? I have cut back on cardio. Usually that just makes me bulk faster. But I've also started adding Hindu push ups to my core warm up. My lats and rear delts have been unusually sore on the days following Hindu push ups, and it's rare for me to get sore these days. I'm not really doing anything else differently, but I have noticed that I'm a lot hungrier. Especially right before getting to the gym. I'm so used to working out on just a cup of coffee (with sugar and half'n half), that it seems odd to realize I actually used to eat oatmeal for breakfast. And not just oatmeal, but oatmeal with an egg and maple syrup. I might have to start that again...

Knowing that my shoulder isn't 100 percent makes me add different push ups to my core warm up. I have to pause at rep 40, and again at rep 45 for Hindus. But I add T-push ups and One-Leg push ups afterwards. The One-Legs are really easy so I put them at the end, when I'm tired. Only a few sets of Smith Inclined Benching because shoulders are delicate. I see The Mayor, but I can't actually hear him. Maybe he's finally learned to use his "inside voice"? Delt and tricep work are routine. I've got an eye on the clock because I'm trying to leave by 1 pm just in case the weather folks were right.

This means I skip the 2nd round of cardio even though all the ellipticals are finally vacant. But I do get in another set of pull ups. Ugh! I'm starting to rely on kipping a little at the end. Not good. But I do make it to 37 reps. I don't usually kip because it's a movement born of desperation and fatigue. (I know it counts in CrossFit, but I'm not a CFer so I don't want to make a habit of it.) Then a quick Mat stretch, down and dirty. The Mayor is chatting with RealEstate Girl the entire time. I can't imagine what he talks about, and I've never been interested enough to listen. I see a few other regulars like Chatty Guy (but without Venus) and Shaggy. No one really worth looking at. Oh well... Tomorrow's a Pull Day, and I dread them. Absolutely dread those RDLs because nothing takes your breath away like that. Maybe I should cut my reps? Twelve per set is a lot, right?

That'll Do

I got the 2nd pair of gloves in the mail last week. Direct from China. Which is always worrisome. I opened the bag and the gloves smell of vinyl. But the smell grows stronger until my entire hallway stinks. I try airing them out and resort to hanging them outside. After a good rainstorm and blazing sun, they still stink. Jeeze. And for bike gloves, they're not horribly padded either. Bummer.

I skipped the gym yesterday and transplanted some seedlings, laid down newspaper around the raised bed which has yet to fully prepped for zucchini and peas. I'm trying a lone strawberry plant, and a blueberry bush in pots that can be moved to follow the sun in my yard. And moved to keep them off the deer menu. A mourning dove I've been watching outside my kitchen window suddenly showed us the half grown nestling under it's wing. It's a hungry little thing. Today it left the nest and was perched a few feet away in the hedges while a catbird tried to pull twigs from the shallow pigeon nest. The catbirds are building a sturdier abode in a deeper part of the hedges.

Today I did my routine 10 minute warm up on the elliptical, then 15 rounds of kickboxing, followed by 15 minutes on the Step Mill. And finally, a set of pull ups. Done! Tomorrow I plan to do everything: cardio, bench, deadlift, row, and maybe some of the accessory work too. Yes, I'm feeling very ambitious, knowing that tomorrow is Friday the 13th.

Making the Body Do What the Brain Wants

My left shoulder felt twingey this morning and I figure I slept on it funny. It worried me a bit as I still planned to whack the kickboxing machine. The rainy weather didn't help, and after I got my son on the school bus, it still took me nearly an hour to get myself together enough to head to the gym. I even ate yogurt with maple syrup with my coffee, because I hate being hungry in the middle of my workout. I still got hungry, but it was during the post-boxing cardio.

I like the ritual of affixing the moleskin, tape, cotton wraps and then gloves before I whack the machine. I'd have bruised and battered knuckles otherwise! The first 5 rounds at Beginner truly are the actual warm up, in spite of the prior 10 minutes of furious pedaling on the elliptical. The machine sporadically blanks the screen, and ignores several of my kicks and punches. Sigh. It's going to be one of THOSE days. It's okay. I'm really just here to work on my kicks and punches, improve my reflexes and stamina. Even if I score abysmally, the workout is worth it.

The first round Intermediate is the worst because of its frenetic pace and arbitrary combinations that might or might not be actual commands. I score very low for all three benchmarks. Thank goodness the subsequent rounds are more reasonable. By the time I get to the Advance level, I'm drenched with sweat and panting. But it feels great.

After I unwrap, I spend 20 minutes on the Precor. I've upped the post-boxing cardio to 20 minutes because it's easier to know when the machine will ask you to pedal backwards in the Performance Programs: every 5 minutes since 4 goes into 20 five times. Start out pedaling forward then at the 5 minute mark, pedal backwards until 10 minutes. Then forward again until 15 minute mark. Finally the last 5 minutes pedal backwards. Done. Well, not quite. I need to do some pull ups. My right shoulder is still a bit achy and my forearms are sore from yesterday. Actually my arms are tired from today, but pull ups are a back exercise, not an arm movement. Hence my justification for pulling myself up and keeping my elbows bent. The only real movement is in my back and that's just where I want it. I get 25 reps this way, then drop to a full extension just to see if I can do any real pull ups after this. I get 3 more. Yaaaay!

Arbitrary April

Because I'm having twinges of sciatica in my right leg again, I decide that today is not "Leg Day" so no Smith Split Squats, no Glute-Ham Raises on the Lat Pull Down machine, no pistol squats. If there's anything I can't do when my hamstrings are wonky, it's pistol squats. I'm not sure what exactly has caused this flare-up. It could be the cardio mileage, or the stretching, or Tuesday's kickboxing. Or a combination of it all. I suspect it's the stretching. Bummer. Of course, the only way to know for sure is to actually skip hamstring stretches for a week while doing everything else. I guess I'll try that next week. At least I didn't get a stitch under my ribs today.

Lately, I've been waking up with heartburn, but only from sleeping on my left side. If I lay on my back or my right side, I don't get it. Limbs get tingly in the night and that frequently wakes me up. But my fingers also go numb a lot, and that's a bit worrisome, especially in the morning when I'm trying to re-braid my hair to keep it out of my face and off my neck. Lately, I've also taken to smearing lotion all over myself before going to the gym. It's the only way I can prevent the tortuous prickly itchiness I get when I'm warming up, but not yet busted a sweat. It's probably because I have such painfully dry skin and the winter air isn't doing me any favors. But I do like the dearth of biting insects! Meanwhile, my heels have developed fissures and I slather them in petroleum jelly every night before bed. I remember my grandmother doing the same when I was a child. She was in her 60s then, and at 56, I'm not so far from that. At least I don't look like I'm nearing 60!

After 30 min on the cross-trainer, I go to the stretch cage. Hammer grip pull ups are so much easier to do if you don't fully extend your arms. I think it's more important to feel the movement in your back (lats) than to strain your elbows and forearms, but I'm not a purist. I'd certainly catch a lot of flack if I were in Boy Scouts, or the Army. I'm feeling a tad guilty about not doing full push ups so today I cut my reps and only get 30 T-push ups. I add back in planks, and do crunches anyway. Then do another set of regular push ups, but with stricter form than usual. I actually think I'm still sore from Wednesday's workout, but it's hard to say. (I didn't work out yesterday because I had to wait for a service guy to come to the house between 9-12, and of course, he showed up at 11:45.)

There are a few noticeable newbies. One is a father/daughter team. He's a mountainous black man, and she's a skinny track star. He has her doing squats and lunges. Then after she's gone, he takes off his sweatshirt, and he's moving weights. There are a lot of HS kids as well, mostly boys. I do Smith Inclined Bench Presses today because it's not flat benching. I can't go as heavy, but it doesn't hurt my shoulders either. I figure the movement works the arms, chest and shoulders differently so once a week is good. Then a light set of DB laterals super set with Reverse Flyes, just for reps. I can't find the 30 lb BB so I grab the 20 and a bunch of magnetic discs for BB Upright Rows. I can definitely feel this in the rear delts and I keep the movement slow and deliberate. My right forearm gets a bit sore but my left is okay. Which reminds me: I haven't done BB RG Curls in ages. Yikes!

Another set of pull ups and these are so much harder. Probably because I drop for full extensions for the last five reps. I can barely get my nose up to the bar for the last two. Off to do 30 more minutes of cardio on the elliptical. I like the Interval program because I can get some decent mileage, although it doesn't have the backwards pedaling that seems to ease my sciatica. Then the 3rd and final set of pull ups. I toy with the idea of a 4th set after the Mat Stretch, but I worry about pushing my luck and developing that nasty under-the-sternum pain. Because my sciatica is making itself known, I don't do some stretches that I know will aggravate it. I'd probably be fine with only stretching once a week or once every other week. I know: it's not what anyone wants to hear, especially in the fitness industry. But I'm not selling anything, only reporting things that happen to be true for me.

Lunch
By the time I get home I'm starving, too hungry to just have a protein shake. No, I want real food! I pop open a can of sardines (in olive oil) and mash that into half an avocado, mix it with raspberry vinaigrette and toss it onto a handful of arugula. Slather the whole combination over some toasted ciabatta slices and it makes a wonderful late lunch. The dog eyes my plate and licks his chops.

Why The Heck Is It So Dang Crowded In Here?

My husband and I had a great time last Friday at the PTO Auction Fundraiser Dinner Dance. It wasn't actually dinner, and for a while we worried that there wasn't any dancing either. Instead, there were appetizers... chips, cheese, cold cuts, grape leaves, empanadas, and lots of well-seasoned tiny lamb chops. And the bar was included so if you didn't want champagne, which was being offered by the waitstaff, then you could get a beer or wine, or any mixed drink. I ate a lot of lamb chops.

The actual auction itself was being hosted by a DJ so there was hope that after everything was bid for, there'd be dancing. And there was. My husband and I were both hot and sweaty by the end of it all, but we were very happy. I have to say that it was the best $100 I ever spent for "dinner", booze and dancing. Plus the entertainment of watching other parents outbid each other for odd items, like the framed and matted, autographed 5th grade class photo. Nice, but hardly worth $300. Maybe I'm not as sentimental as some folks?

Today it's snowing as I walk my son to the school bus stop. The snow's not sticking because it's 33F, but by the time he gets off the bus, we're being pelted with sleet. I'm assuming the bad weather is the reason the gym is so crowded today. Plus, it's Monday post-Easter, post-Lent. People have indulged and everyone's worried about shedding their winter bodies. I'm a bit heavier than I'd like to be, but overall I can't complain as long as I stick to my routines!

I'm at the gym long enough to witness the ebb and flow of the gym crowd. The morning people leave and it's quite pleasant. Then the early lunch crowd arrives and it's crowded again. I've tossed my old gym gloves because they're so worn and torn that they're making my fingers itch. I have a pair of barely used black workout gloves (Valeo), but the built-in wrist wraps are uncomfortable. I get a pair of scissors from the front desk and snip the wraps off. The gloves fit okay and I like the padded palms, especially during pull ups. But afterwards, I discover that the black leather dye is transferring onto my fingers and hands. Ugh! I hate that! Luckily, I probably have at least two more different pairs of gloves at home (Altus, Harbinger). The gym owner says that the company (FlexSports) that made my old gloves doesn't answer, so they've probably gone out of business. Bummer.

I look on Amazon (because you can usually find just about anything there) and there are a few FlexSports gloves but very little information as to whether this is suitable to replace my old gloves. Gloves are everything to me because of my tiny hands and fingers. And even with padded gloves, I still develop callouses that need to be filed smooth! Oh well. I toss a pair of Contraband Pink Label lifting gloves into my virtual shopping basket. I'm not sure how they'll perform, but it's better than being barehanded, or having black half-fingers.

I concentrate of chest and delts today, without neglecting cardio, or hammer grip pull ups. My only issue during Smith Bench Pressing is that my nylon tank is too slippery. Seriously. Nothing more frustrating that finding yourself sliding across the bench as you press 120 lbs up off your chest. Perhaps I need to situate myself more directly under the bar, and wear a cotton tank next time. I can't really plant my feet on the ground because my legs are too short, so my feet are perched on the bench feet itself. This means that I'm pushing against the bench and sliding. Maybe I should just pull my legs up and put my feet flat on the bench instead? Because I'm a bit frustrated that I can only get 20 reps (instead of 25) at 90 lbs, I drop 10 lbs and immediately do another high-rep set. Okay, that feels better, like I actually did some work.

The DB area is almost totally vacant and that makes me happy. Half-way through my routine, 4 different guys show up, and suddenly everyone's jockeying for space and benches. Ugh. It's not pretty. The Mayor and his cronies spend so much time talking loudly, I wonder how they manage to say they actually work out with a straight face. Skinny J keep hovering in my periphery. It's annoying. I suspect that he, like a lot of the middle-age guys there, wants me to acknowledge his presence. I don't know why. I have nothing to say to any of them. Chatting takes gym time, and being social isn't worth "cooling down". The gym's not a place for that, at least for me. I do say Hi briefly to Mo who hasn't been at the gym for the past two and a half years. She just left a job and will be needing a new one soon, but in the interim, there's no better place to de-stress and get back into shape. She tells me that I look even younger than before because of my grown-out hair. It's been a long time since my hair came to my elbows. Yep, I certainly was younger then, by at least 20 years.

My mother-in-law passed away last Friday. I'd heard that she contracted pneumonia over Easter and wasn't expected to survive it. So I'm surprised to learn that she lasted the week, and I wonder if she'd been waiting for my husband. Even with her severe memory and speech loss, she still recognized my husband (and only him) when we visited last December. And I can't help but wonder if she had been holding on just to say Good Bye to him. Of course, my husband, like many men, are so engulfed in their work responsibilities that he needs a direct order to do otherwise. And, like many men, my husband is not good at dealing with illness or death, or strong emotions. I've already dealt with the passing of both my parents. My husband, who is younger, now has to deal with his. At least he works out at the hotel gym, because he doesn't want to descend into the physical and mental frailties of a sedentary life. Being adopted, he's not genetically related to anyone in his family, but becoming frail and confused is a real worry. As we get older, we seem to age faster!
