Benefits

Watching American Ninja Warrior last night off my DVR got me thinking about "useful" muscles vs. "mirror" muscles, i.e., the ones you work on just to show off. Top finishers of the course varied in their physiques, but they were all super strong. Some had phenomenal muscles, and others were so long and lean that their actual strength was hidden. Until it came time to perform. And then it was strength and endurance that made good things happen. Sometimes there was bad luck, or bad timing. The one generalization I can make is that the lighter people had an advantage over those with more mass. Obviously, having long limbs helps immensely, but wasn't critical for finishing. And if a competitor had the length disadvantage, then being ridiculously strong for their size was a major bonus. Well, duh...

I'll never compete in anything like ANW, but I want to be super strong. I work hard on my endurance as well. Today, I do 15 rounds of whacking the machine, followed by 30 min on the elliptical, and then 31 hammer grip pull ups. Because the only way to build endurance and strength for me is to keep pushing long after the hunger pangs and vague feelings of fatigue. I'm surprised at how often I can push past all that. It's very gratifying!

But let's hope I'm not so tired that I forget how to float at tonight's swim lesson.

The Vagaries of Women's Clothing Sizes and Other Observations

Yep, I'm still sore. It's tropical here in the Northeast, with temps in the 80s and high humidity. The glass storm door is fogged when I open the front door. Well, I've never seen that before. The dog is miserable in his thick fur coat so I aim a fan at him while he pants in front of the door.

Uh, just a tad big here...
I'm whacking the machine today so I put on my newest tank top, a light mesh Avia item I got from Walmart for $8. It's a size Small. In general, I take an XS but I'm not sure why, except that most women, I'm guessing, are much bigger than I am. This tank billows a bit under the arms, but I'm not all that concerned. What's funny is that my sports bra, an Everlast special, fits comfortably because it's an XL. This means it's impossible for me to buy any sports tank with built-in "support" because the XS are so tight I can't breathe, and I can swim right out of the XLs.

Which leads me to wonder if women regularly wear bras that are too tight? I see a lot of older women with the tell-tale bra lines under their T-shirts and tanks. I guess everyone thinks that's what normal is. I'm too pressure-sensitve to put up with that. I just need headlight protection for my high-beams, and material just secure enough to dampen any bouncing. I hate bouncing. That's when I know I've put on too much weight -- when I can feel my glutes and belly jiggle while I pedal furiously on the elliptical.

I warm up with 10 min on the elliptical and then proceed to the Nexersys. In general, it's fairly routine. I feel myself fading during the last set, so I suck it up (so to speak) because I'm determined to make the actual last round one of my better efforts. When I give in to feeling weak and tired, then my workout is weak and tired. Well, duh. It's sort of ignoring yourself to dig deeper and finding that you have more power and energy than you first believed, which is actually very cool. Trust me.

Looks okay from the back?
Afterwards, I do an easy 20 minutes on the elliptical while fending off hunger pangs. I hate being hungry in the middle of a workout! I see the Mayor with his boy in tow. And I see a few other regulars with kids in tow. It must be "take your kid to the gym day." Shaggy has a boy who is as tall as he is, and has probably 20 lbs on him. He's a big, dumpy kid and Shaggy looks almost petite next to him. I see another regular who's always doing furious amounts of cardio. I do see him on some of the Cybex machines, but he's got a skinny-fat kind of physique. And then I see his boy, a short chubby kid. Oh, now I get it: Skinny-fat used to be fat, too. Heck, I used to be fat. Yep, a good 20 lbs fatter than I am now. And because I never want to be fat again, I do furious amounts of cardio. Except I don't look skinny-fat. Because I'm not.

Today also seems to be a bonus day for new members. The gym staff is busy showing middle-age couples the equipment, and how to use some of the cardio machines. It's good, but annoying, because they need to not be standing right next to me while I'm punching and kicking the Nexersys. Seriously. The power goes out just as I start to stretch out. After a few minutes, everything is back to normal. When I get home, the microwave is blinking. I don't know if my generator kicked on or not. It's suppose to be fixed. And I'm suppose to be getting a $225 credit on my last bill, plus the fellow promised to knock another $200 off this bill, just for causing me so much aggravation. That's nice, but I'll believe it when I see it on my credit card statement. Yep, thunderstorms in the forecast. The swim school closes the pool if there's lightning. I wonder if I even have class tonight...

Stamina is the Goal

It takes me a while to get out the door today even though it's reasonably sunny, and not too cold. I haven't put away my winter gear yet though, not with the Polar Vortex descending and dropping temps into frostiness.

I don't want to wear my hoodie today because I know the gym will get really warm once the sun climbs higher in the sky. So I layer my sweatshirt tank over a regular nylon tank, over my sports bra. I'm toasty enough for the first two levels, but have to strip off the sweatshirt by the time I start the Advance rounds. At least my hair is mostly staying put, now that it's long enough to stay clipped with barrettes and two ponytail holders.

I see a lot of regulars. I even tell one old woman she's an idiot for walking between the machines between rounds, because I could inadvertently hit her while throwing a cross. I don't think she heard me because 1) she's old, 2) she was wearing headphones and 3) she was focused on getting to point A without falling. People are stupid. And they get worse the older they get. As if rules and laws of gravity don't apply to them.

After whacking the machine, I do 15 minutes on the elliptical, using Program #2 because I can pedal forward for a bit and then backward. I find this helps to loosen up my legs and back after all the Knee-Ups, Sweeps and Kicks. Then I do a cursory stretch and a set of Hammer Grip Pull Ups. I still enjoy how I can feel all the movement in my back instead of elbows and biceps. Tomorrow is another abbreviated day so it'll be mostly cardio, and then I get to tow my son to the dentist with me later in the afternoon before his kung fu class. Oh joy...

Started off really strong, but blanking the screen messes with the Accuracy because of missed strikes: you can't punch what you can't see.

5 rounds Intermediate
I still think the pacing of some rounds at this level are actually at Advanced Level. Accuracy and Power both suffer. Still occasionally blanking the screen as well.

5 rounds Advanced
My lungs stung sporadically during these rounds, and I had to take off my sleeveless sweatshirt because I got too hot. Still, it was enjoyable. Glad I made it through all 5 rounds!

Let's Dance...

I've been reading a lot about David Bowie since he passed away last Sunday. All artists want to be remembered for their work, but there's always more. Most of the obituaries list his influence on music and fashion, but I wanted to know if he was genuinely a nice person. And apparently, he was. A genuinely proper and loving husband, father, benefactor, patron. Seeing him as a whole person has the peculiarly contradictory effect of mitigating our loss, while giving us more to grieve.

Today I get to the gym later than I planned to. I hadn't planned on being awake at 2 am, puking up slivers of dried seaweed. I can't predict what foods will get caught in my hiatal hernia although it's usually vegetable in nature. At least it wasn't the searing back spasms I'm used to. Instead, it felt as if I'd been sleeping on a large rock. A rock inside my back, inside my rib cage. It takes me 30 minutes to make things right and settle back into sleep. The alarm purrs too soon and I hit the snooze. But it's not the snooze and I wake, luckily, 30 minutes later, having dreamt of faces and places. I am refreshed and my back doesn't hurt. Still, I'm cautious. Later, at the end of my workout, I hesitate, wondering if I should do pull ups, remembering how painful it was just a few months ago.

Today, I put on a new workout top purchased on a whim at Kmart. It's a Jillian Michael® sweat vest on sale for $10. I've been looking for a muscle sweatshirt in my size for a long time, but they don't make those things for boys or small women. I don't like the gaping sides because I'm self-conscious of me poking over my bra. I'm not the type to work out in just my bra top either. Even though I wear a XS or Sm tank, my sports bras are XLs because I can't breathe otherwise. Totally not a fan of compression-wear. I put a grey Gap® tank over my bra and under the vest. It matches perfectly. With black sport pants and trainers, I feel taller and slimmer. I'm such a badass!

JM vest: note armholes
I'm finally learning to ignore the phantom strikes that flicker on the Intermediate screen after a particularly powerful Sweep or Cross. I lose points when the screen goes blank (4th Intermediate) for a full second (it seems longer) and I miss the combination. When I ignore the "flash" at the Advance level, the Accuracy score drops so I know that I have to hit every strike. Some rounds are easier than others. There's at least one round (3rd Adv) where I have to pause while the machine flashes commands at light-speed. Once I recognize a combination, I start punching and kicking again.

When I'm in sync with my music and the program, I'm literally bobbing back and forth with each strike. Thrust and parry. It feels fantastic, like a choreographed dance number. I'll have to adjust my music again and pull out the slower pieces to make this more consistent. Let's dance!

The vest does its job of keeping my headphone wires tucked away. (I've already accidentally yanked off an earpiece because the wires, drooping from my head down the front of my tank, have gotten caught in a glove.) It also keeps me warm, and it looks good. Both Step Mills are in use when I'm finally ready to do some LISS. I get on the Precor elliptical and punch in 15 minutes Program #3. A quick stretch at the Cage, and then I wonder if I dare try pull ups today. My stomach doesn't hurt. Go for it! I do my 15 with slightly bent elbows, drop to a full hang and get my last five. It feels real good!

Total side note: saw in a coupon flyer that Rubbermaid is now selling a mixer bottle with a blender ball inside. It's not a wire ball like the BlenderBottle®, which, by the way, works great. Competition is the sincerest form of flattery. Don't know how well the Rubbermaid version works, but you can probably find it in the supermarket.

Underestimated Strength

Today is Whack the Machine Day and I'm mildly excited. My upper back, delts and lats are actually a little sore. I'm not sure why. I blame the 50 T-push ups I did yesterday because other than that, my routine was well, rather routine. (Actually, I did 80, but I wasn't counting the first set.)

I manage to ignore the phantom strike commands for the most part, but I'm still flummoxed by some of the combinations in the Advance rounds. What's most annoying is that the machine program is not consistent, advising you that it will be using X and Y combinations in the upcoming round, and then either not, or tossing completely different combinations (W and Z) at you. It wouldn't be so irksome if missing those blows didn't ruin your accuracy score, but it does. The screen also stays blank longer when I hit a Power Sweep or Cross too hard. Which means I miss directives for a blow or two. Bye-Bye, accuracy. Oh well...

I don't bust a sweat during the entire 5-round Beginner session. Not even breathing hard. That all changes with the Intermediate rounds. And the Advance rounds kicks my butt. Thank goodness the machine can't actually punch back. I do 15 active minutes on the Step Mill. Most people trudge up the steps as if they've got weights on their shoulders. Half of them are slumped on the arm rests. I try to alleviate the tedium by changing my footwork every 60 seconds. A minute of stepping across, a minute of stepping sideways to the left, then to the right. A minute of rocking on the balls of my feet as I step up. A minute of pulling myself forward and back as if I'm rowing with each step. That's five different gaits in five minutes. Repeat twice again and 15 minutes is done.

I stretch out my hamstrings, and then look blearily at the roof of the Stretch Cage. My forearm feels okay today. My shoulders, lats and upper back are okay for now, but I'm sure they'll stiffen up as I cool down. Only 15 reps. By rep 12 I feel tired even though I'm careful not to go to full extension on the descent. Keeping elbows slightly bent is suppose to take the stress off those joints. I get 15 and then just dangle there for a moment, at full extension. Okay, let's see if I can do just one more pull up. And I do. And another. And another. Until I've gotten five more from a dead drop. Wow, that was a surprise! And I feel good.

Ignoring the Obvious

The thermometer read 1°F when I took the dog out this morning. That didn't include the wind chill factor. I've already opened a few packets of chemical hand warmers to keep in my pockets because I can't seem to generate enough body heat, especially in my bony little hands. I drive my son to the school bus stop because not only is it barely 5F by 8 am, but he's got to bring his viola to school. Never mind the class trip he's going on today to the Stone Hills Farm. Gathering eggs ought to be a lot of fun in the bitter cold. I'm assuming that the hen houses are pretty warm from all the chickens. Driving to the school bus stop means I get to the gym early. Yaaay!

I don't have a chance to affix the moleskin patches until I get to the locker room, and that's just too crowded and noisy from all the hens going to zumba or spin class. Instead, I pedal as hard as I can for 10 minutes to warm up before stripping off my hoodie in front of the Nexersys machine, and sitting down to don patches, white tape, cotton wraps, and then finally, my gloves. I bought six rolls of the white tape on Amazon because the price was great. But I didn't realize that this white tape is near impossible to rip by hand so now I keep a pocket knife in my boxing bag just to cut tape strips. The whole routine takes about 6-7 minutes so that's not bad. Practice makes faster!

I have a pretty good time whacking the machine. Not busting a sweat through the entire 5-round Beginner warm up. Learning to ignore the ghost commands that flash on the screen during the Intermediate rounds. It usually happens right after a Power Sweep or Right Cross. I think more of the sensors are loose. I blank the screen several times today, which isn't good because the program is still running whether you can see the commands or not.

I have trouble with the Advance program only because my brain is stuck on hitting Jab first, followed by Cross. So when the combo comes up as Cross / Jab / Cross / Lead Kick, I'm totally flustered and score a zero for four potential blows. Oh well, eventually I'll get it. I feel a lot better as the end of the Advance program, as if I've gotten my second wind. 15 rounds is about 60 minutes of what I'm classifying as High Intensity Interval Training. Because my power is just hovering at mid-90s, the machine tells me that I'm optimizing my workouts. Wahoo for whatever that means. I'd rather be "overpower", but I'm really trying to improve my accuracy score. Really.

My right pointer knuckle is still sensitive even though I can't actually feel the cyst below the skin. When I peel all the dressing off, that is the only knuckle that appears red and bruised. It doesn't hurt though unless I really press into it. I've been taking the loratadine twice a day for a few weeks now and the itching on my neck has lessened. There's still a bit of red discoloration though. I should put some dit da jow (Chinese bruise medicine) on it.

I'm all out of ZMA tablets though, so that sucks. I really do believe that the combination of magnesium aspartate, zinc monomethionine and aspartate, and B6 really helps me stay in deep sleep if not longer, then for more cycles. I've looked at purchasing the minerals separately, but I'm not sure how effective magnesium oxide or zinc gluconate is. I have the Optimum Nutrition brand ZMA (120 capsules $22.65) on order at Amazon, but since I don't have Prime, it'll take weeks before they show up. Or I could just drive to the Mall and see if GNC carries it but they want so much more money for less product (NOW brand 90 capsules $20).

I do 15 minutes of LISS on the Step Mill, going at speed 5. 10 minutes into it and sweat is trickling down my nose. I'm not as warmed up as I'd like my legs to be, but figuring how I skipped the Mat stretch yesterday, I should do it today. It's harder to do when your legs are stiff and a tad sore. I almost fall on my butt doing pistol squats. But it's good to change up the routine.

The gym scale reads slightly better than yesterday at 110.3 lbs. At least it's going in the right direction. It's so cold outside that I dispense with the ritual of air drying my cumbersome long hair, and just brush and braid it wet. Then I stuff it under my fleece hat where it's out of the way. When my hair dries this way, it becomes unusually soft. Weird.

At the supermarket, I see D. I haven't seen her in a month and I was hoping that it was because her husband just needed a lot of care after a risky surgery. She tells me that she has good days and bad days and today is a bad day. Her husband died on the operating table last month. The more she has to talk about it, the worst she's going to feel so I tell her to let me give her my contact info, and ask her if she's found a grief support group. I tell her to call or email or text me because I've been through this, this type of grief. When we run into each other in a different aisle I tell her that the peanut butter Oreos are the worst and that no one should ever buy them. She grabs a box of mint Oreos and says "Well, these make me feel better." And we both laugh. Because real emotions are too raw for the grocery store. I don't even know D's last name. Nor do I have her contact info. On the drive home, I feel like crying and my heart hurts.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do tomorrow. Probably cardio and some weights. Probably.

Epic Hedge Battle

Cracked mirror in the
CF / deadlift section
My shoulders and forearms are sore today and I know it's not from yesterday's Delt workout. Actually, it was the sore forearms that clued me in. Sunday I decided to tackle our driveway hedges because they loom over 8 feet high. When the snow finally comes this winter, the hedges will bend down into our driveway and make shoveling a royal pain. I don't have anything motorized that hasn't rusted to pieces so it's all chop chop snip snip with hand shears and a branch lopper. The neighbor on the other side of the driveway helped a bit with his hedge trimmer and machete, but honestly, I think I made better time with my tools. Hubs was busy running errands before having to leave for Boston so he wasn't any help whatsoever in the epic hedge battle.

Can't tell if this is good or not
At several points along the way, I wished I'd had the forethought to put on a pair of safety glasses. Since I'm barely 5 feet tall, I'm constantly reaching over my head to snip and lop. Which means leaves, branches, vines and other debris tend to rain down on me. A rather large branch nailed me just under the eyebrow and left a long red scratch over my eyelid. Thank goodness for my thick Asian eyelids! I put a dab of antibiotic ointment on it and hope for the best. Sometimes I forget and wipe the sweat off my face, but the scratch stings so I'm better if I can remember to blot, not wipe.

Today I get to whack the Nexersys machine. I put a large square of "heavy duty moleskin" on the knuckle afflicted with the pesky cyst. It seems to help. I should probably stop battering my hands so much. I don't need arthritis as I age even though it seems that everyone has arthritis somewhere. When I'm done, I do 15 min on the Step Mill. I've managed to regain all the weight I've lost over the past several months. It's been so sudden that I wonder if it's really weight, or water. I have been snacking a lot these past several days and I wonder if I go back to eating like I have gallbladder issues, will the weight fall away again?

When I go to the supermarket, I find myself running into (and avoiding) people I recognize from the gym. A lot of people from the gym, including "Blondie", the fellow who had the bad dye job. It's since grown out but he still wears odd clothes to workout. But in normal street wear, he actually looks decently attractive. Except I'm really gun-shy and avoid making eye-contact with anyone I might vaguely know from the gym. Unless it's actually someone I know and consider a "friend" after a fashion. Those people I'll talk to. I know --  I'm weird.

Post Turkey Friday

I got up late yesterday and my whole household was still asleep. After feeding and walking the dog, I got myself packed and off to the gym. It was crowded for a Friday! But it was an unusually nice day, and I did my usual 10 min warm up, boxed and kicked for 15 rounds, spent 15 min on the Step Mill and then headed home. The gym scale read 109 lbs. Two pounds of festive eating!

I did feel a bit queasy when I woke up. I attribute that to the desserts… there was no way to decline the "napoleon" so I ate around it… we brought blueberry pie and apple pie from Salinger's Orchard. They make the absolutely best pies! My brother's wife commented on the fact that this is the only blueberry pie she's ever had where there's not a lot of syrupy goop inside. Instead, the pie is packed nearly solid with berries. The same is true for their apple pies, but then again, they are an apple and peach orchard farm.

Punching was a bit painful in spite of all the precautions I take with my hands. I've developed a small cyst just outside the first knuckle of my right hand. I've had these before and when I finally excavate them, they turn out to be tiny pellets reminiscent of hard gelatin. Ugh. I'll have to put extra moleskin on before I box again.

From the website: dermnetnz.org/lesions/mucous-cyst.html

There appear to be two variations. The first is a form of focal mucinosis, a condition characterized by abnormal deposits of mucopolysaccharides (mucins) in the skin. Strictly speaking, it shouldn't be called a cyst as it does not have a surrounding capsule, and is better termed a pseudocyst. The other variation arises from extension of the lining of the finger joint and is due to osteoarthritis – a type of ganglion.

Today my son has archery, and then a swim Birthday Party later at the NY Sports Club. My hubs has decided he has better things to do. We did watch Jurassic World, and Guardians of the Galaxy last night, while snacking on cheese and crackers, and kalua pork. The pork is dry though and I slather my serving with homemade BBQ sauce (ketchup, molasses, garlic powder, apple cider vinegar). My hubs tends to pour off the cooking juices, with the intention of skimming the fat once it cools, but the container is still in the fridge with 2 inches of white pork lard on top. Oh well…

He's complaining about needed to change his workout because he's not seeing any progress after a few weeks. But he has started taking apple cider vinegar at night, just to see if it'll help.

An Unexpected Wrench in My Hand

I'm gonna buy it! My right hand has been sore for the past few days, to the point of where I'm waking up with it aching and stiff. I...
