Feeling My Age?

Today's Selfie
I think women have a higher pain threshold than men. We just like to moan about it more because that's how we're raised. Men are told it isn't "manly" to complain about aches and pains. I'm not complaining. I'm just noting that I'm feeling a tad stiff today and it's slowing me down. I can only make 6.19 miles total for cardio because my quads are sore. Not horribly sore, but enough to impede my movements ever so slightly. My shoulders feel a bit heavy as well. But my knuckles don't hurt, and my sciatica is "in remission", so all is great with the world!

Today is another Early Dismissal so I'm in a rush to get my workout done. And I want it to be a meaningful workout, so there's a full hour of cardio, three sets of push ups, lots of crunches, and at least two sets of pull ups. For my final set, I again save the full extension pull ups for the end. Maybe I can work myself up to 25 reps. That'd be awesome!

I see regulars and newbies, but I don't have time to do anything more than get my routine done. Because I still need to change, shower and dress, and drive home to meet the school bus. Whew! Not looking forward to the forecasted snow either. Oh well... I haven't put any of my winter gear away yet so we're good. It is April after all.

Stamina is the Goal

It takes me a while to get out the door today even though it's reasonably sunny, and not too cold. I haven't put away my winter gear yet though, not with the Polar Vortex descending and dropping temps into frostiness.

I don't want to wear my hoodie today because I know the gym will get really warm once the sun climbs higher in the sky. So I layer my sweatshirt tank over a regular nylon tank, over my sports bra. I'm toasty enough for the first two levels, but have to strip off the sweatshirt by the time I start the Advance rounds. At least my hair is mostly staying put, now that it's long enough to stay clipped with barrettes and two ponytail holders.

I see a lot of regulars. I even tell one old woman she's an idiot for walking between the machines between rounds, because I could inadvertently hit her while throwing a cross. I don't think she heard me because 1) she's old, 2) she was wearing headphones and 3) she was focused on getting to point A without falling. People are stupid. And they get worse the older they get. As if rules and laws of gravity don't apply to them.

After whacking the machine, I do 15 minutes on the elliptical, using Program #2 because I can pedal forward for a bit and then backward. I find this helps to loosen up my legs and back after all the Knee-Ups, Sweeps and Kicks. Then I do a cursory stretch and a set of Hammer Grip Pull Ups. I still enjoy how I can feel all the movement in my back instead of elbows and biceps. Tomorrow is another abbreviated day so it'll be mostly cardio, and then I get to tow my son to the dentist with me later in the afternoon before his kung fu class. Oh joy...

5 rounds Beginner
Started off really strong, but blanking the screen messes with the Accuracy because of missed strikes: you can't punch what you can't see.

5 rounds Intermediate
I still think the pacing of some rounds at this level are actually at Advanced Level. Accuracy and Power both suffer. Still occasionally blanking the screen as well.

5 rounds Advanced
My lungs stung sporadically during these rounds, and I had to take off my sleeveless sweatshirt because I got too hot. Still, it was enjoyable. Glad I made it through all 5 rounds!

Another Abbreviated Workout

I haven't been to the gym since last Thursday. Friday I had an appointment with the tax preparer and Monday was just too cold and rainy. Seriously. After spending 20 minutes standing in 38F rain and wind, waiting for my gimpy dog to do his messy business, all I want to do is crawl back into bed and pull the fleece covers up to my chin while I sip on coffee and read the newspaper. Which is exactly what I do since it's the last day of Spring Break and my son is still asleep. Childhood ends soon enough. I figure I'll let him sleep while he can.

When I go through the mail, I get a letter from Synchrony Bank (GE Capital Retail) offering to give me an interest-free account on my R'Us account as long as I pay my balance in full. Otherwise the interest rate is a ridiculous 26.99%. I thought loan-sharking was illegal, and I'm not sure why they're mailing this letter out since not only do I not carry any balances on my credit cards, but I certainly wouldn't use one with such a high interest rate if I did, especially to buy toys. Because it's a Toys R Us credit card. I want to know what Rocket Scientist actually thought this was a good deal?

The dog had a bad reaction to the Metacam (canine NSAID) so he's now on a combination of gabapentin and tramadol for pain, and a probiotic and an antibiotic for the gastric bleeding. The dog has gone from pooping BBQ sauce (definitely gastric bleeding there), to stress poops (orange & gelatinous), to just ochre diarrhea with flecks of red and orange. Unfortunately, the runny poops could also be a side effect of stress, antibiotics and/or tramadol. But he's in a much better mood, wanting to chase feral cats, and thinking he can climb up the 5 steps to the front door. But we won't let him. Because he still has a ruptured ACL.

Today is sunny. But so windy that patio furniture seat cushions are lying in the road. Not sure who's missing those. My son's school has a half day today due to Parent-Teacher conferences so my workout is short and intense. I'm not happy that I develop stitches just under my sternum that migrate to the left side of my chest while I'm on the Cross-trainer. Or the numbness in my right foot. They're all gone by the time I attempt my first set of pull ups. I knock out push ups interspersed with crunches. I need more time if I want to do planks again.

I see a few familiar faces, crawling out of winter hibernation or back from Snow Bird land. Creepy PJ Pants on the treadmill, the Mayor holding court between the cable stations, M chatting with Hollywood. Flirty Girl laughing at someone's joke. And me? I'm singing along (silently) to my iPod tunes as I pedal the elliptical. For my 2nd and last set of pull ups, I keep my elbows bent until rep 20, then drop into a full extension. I manage 3 more reps and I'm very happy!

I read an article about a 7-minute workout that requires no equipment other than a mat, chair and wall. I'm not keen on the jumping jacks due to my wonky joints but the rest of it looks fun. But first, I have to get back to my full routine, and then I'll add variations. Ah, something to look forward to!

Tomorrow will be a normal school day, so I'm planning to whack the Nexersys for a few rounds. Okay. 12-15 rounds. I need new workout gloves but my gym hasn't ordered any new gear in months. The only gloves are Mediums and larger, and those are so big that my fingers barely poke out past the finger holes. I still have my Happy Birthday Postcard which entitles me to a free protein shake, and 15% off a clothing or gear purchase. I might get a shake tomorrow, and celebrate my birthday. Finally.

Improving Daily

My son and I get to the gym late but there's enough time for a moderate workout. My shoulders are a tad tired today. Must be from whacking the machine yesterday! My hamstrings and quads are also slightly sore. It actually feels good to know that my muscles haven't completely gone to the dogs.

I only have time for two 30-minute cardio sessions and a few sets of push ups, pull ups and crunches. I feel like my hair takes an inordinately long time to deal with. When I tally up my cardio, I'm surprised to make over 6 miles. It's probably because I did Intervals for my 2nd session. It kicks my butt today, but I feel that it's well worth it. Literature suggests that high intensity workouts can improve cardio function. But of course, there's other literature that suggests that moderate distance (endurance) training is better for longevity and health. Can I do both? Kidding. Or not.

I do regular push ups, skip planks and do crunches instead. Two sets of hammer grip pull ups will have to do. I feel fairly strong until I get past the 15th rep. But I don't have to resort to kipping to finish the rest of my set. I'm out of time now, giving myself 30 minutes to change, shower and dress. You would think that's enough time, but just barely. Especially with half a dozen HS girls chatting in the tiny locker room. And what are they talking about? Getting their hair colored and how they charge $400 on daddy's credit card, but they only do it every 4-5 months so that should be okay. Besides, it makes them look good, and that makes them happy. Oh, good grief. I'm a no-fuss, no-muss kind of gal. Today, the most I do is put some leave-on tea tree conditioner in my hair and brush it.

I'm not making it to the gym tomorrow as I have an appt with my tax prep person. There's no school on Monday either, so I guess it'll be another abbreviated workout. Tuesday too, since that's a half day due to Parent-Teacher-Conferences. Oh well...

Recovery Takes Freakin' Forever

Today
My son takes his laptop to the gym Child Care room today because it's mostly toddlers and he claims that he doesn't have great games on his phone. And since the gym offers WiFi, why not? I'm in a mad rush to get my stuff stowed away in the locker room, warmed up, and then taped and wrapped. This all takes time. Two hours just isn't enough if you plan to do an hour-workout. There's just no time for anything more, especially since donning and stripping off gear also takes time. I need the moleskin to keep my knuckles intact, the tape keeps the moleskin intact and protects my fingers from the edges of the gloves, the cotton wraps support my tiny hand bones and keep the gloves snug. As you can see, the one-size-fits-all pink gloves look enormous on me. But they're not big gloves. And just as I've put all this protection on, I have to methodically take it all off.

The 10-minute warm up on the elliptical feels good. I don't even wear my ragged blue hoodie today because it's a reasonably warm day for March. My sciatica's not bothering me either. Wahoo! I haven't yet decided how many rounds to do. It depends on how much time I have left, how much time I take between sessions. And how I feel.

I'm not lacking in the strength department as I catch sight of Power numbers that reach into the 300s. I've never seen that before, and quite truthfully, I didn't know the machine could register that high. But this is just the Beginner rounds. I'm sweating by the end of 5 rounds, and I debate whether to pull a round from each subsequent session. Naw. Let's go for 5 at Intermediate. I do forget to change the database so I'm still 55 years old, not that it makes much difference. Intermediate is a lot harder, and faster. I still suspect that the machine's software is glitchy, and using the Advance pacing for some of the Intermediate rounds. My Power and Accuracy ratings drop, but not because I've missed any Strikes. I'm not taking this personally.

By the Advance round, I'm really tired. I don't have my usual stamina so I cut down to 3 rounds. I've also blanked the machine a few times, which means I've probably missed a few blows here and there. By the time I'm done, the clock tells me I only have 30 minutes to strip off all my gear, shower and change. It's actually not enough time, especially since I'm particular with how I put all my stuff away. The most-time consuming part is dealing with my hair. I really miss the wash 'n go aspect of having a Pixie cut. At some point I'll get fed up enough to chop it all off, but then I'll have to deal with maintenance trims. Too much work!

Recovery Doesn't Feel Like It

I skipped the gym yesterday because I had too many errands to do with my son in tow. The big trip was down to the Scout Shop to purchase a new shirt for him. I can't get the glue off his old shirt which he'll most likely outgrow by next year. Unfortunately, the next size up is an Adult Small. Whatever happened to Youth XL? The new shirt comes to his knees and he'll have to tuck all that extra fabric inside his pants. Oh boy... Can't wait for us to sew on his new Boy Scout patches. I'm kidding. I hate sewing. The old Cub Scout ones are all tucked away in his sock drawer.

My dog ruptured his ACL over a week ago, but he's getting around, although he can't climb into the bay window anymore. I put folding tables on the futon he normally climbs up on to keep him off. And I've stopped stocking the bird feeder because it's just torture for him to know that the squirrels and/or feral cats are lurking under the feeder, and he can't get into the window to bark at them. So seed, no birds, no squirrels and/or cats. The vet suggested several surgical options but only recommended one called TTA(Tibial Tuberosity Advancement).

From the acvs.org website: Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) requires a linear cut along the front of the shin (tibia) bone. The front of the tibia, called the ‘tibial tuberosity’ is advanced forward until the attachment of the quadriceps is oriented approximately 90 degrees to the tibial plateau. This is another way to accomplish the same mechanical advantage offered by the TPLO that renders the knee more stable in the absence of the CrCL. The TTA and TPLO share similar advantages and disadvantages. Similar to the TPLO, the cut in the bone is stabilized by the use of a specifically designed bridging bone plate and screws. The decision between TPLO and TTA is based purely on the opinion of your surgeon and their personal technical experience. To date, no published data supports one technique being superior to the other.

Of course, there is always the option of just letting the dog limp around with his injury. He's on a daily dose of Metacam (a NSAID for dogs), and joint supplements. Because the recommended treatment doesn't repair the ruptured ligament. Instead, they change the angle of the damaged area of the tibia. I'm not quite sure how this stabilizes the knee joint. But the dog is suppose to be able to regain use of his leg with this. Doing internet research reveals information that suggests non-surgical care may be another option, especially since our dog is 13 and is finally just recovering from his "traumatic" trip to the vet. Having to take him thrice weekly for post-surgical rehab is going to make him a wreck. Check out tiggerpoz.com here.

I don't really have any symptoms from my three-week bout with sinusitis, but I seem to have a lingering headache I can't explain and my right ear is plugged most of the time. It's very annoying. I'm also really tired. And that's unusual for me, although I seem to recall a similar effect the last time I was laid low. Apparently, recovery is a lot more than just the cessation of symptoms. Today I do my two 30-minute sessions of cardio, but I don't kill myself to make time. My head still hurts intermittently. I get a pain inside my sternum while pedaling the Life Fitness Cross-trainer and I don't like how high my heart rate is. Yes, I'm worried that my BP is too high as well, but there's no accurate way for me to check other than the unreliable monitor on the cardio machines.

The dramatic changes in temperature and humidity have me scratching like a snake trying to molt. I'm not warmed up enough to sweat while I pedal the Cross-trainer, and it's torture. I want to rip my skin off because of the pin-prick itchiness all over my back, arms, legs. It's a relief when perspiration finally trickles down my face because that moisture quenches the burning sensation. I know, my nerves and skin are all messed up. I was like this as a child too. Made my mother crazy because I wouldn't, couldn't wear anything scratchy, or too hot, or too rough. Which basically meant anything with lace or mesh under the skirts to make them fluff out. Nope, no girly-girl clothes for me!

I do pull ups and push ups, crunches and a plank. The plank is a lot harder than I remember, but I haven't done them in a long time. The pull ups would be easier if I started with sets of 15 instead of sticking to 21 reps. And push ups? Well, my first set was 100. And I only had time for one more set. I made it to 80. I suppose I could've really pushed myself to 100, but that takes time. And with a 2-hr limit in the child care room, which includes changing and showering time, well... I just don't have the luxury of time this week.

Besides, I have plans to take my son to the movies today. Today is $5 Tuesday and two movies are playing that we want to see: Dead Pool, and Zootopia. And we see both of them. We'd see both of them again, although I was a bit surprised that the Disney movie, Zootopia made references to Breaking Bad. After all, Dead Pool is the flick with the R-rating! But they were both really good, extremely entertaining in completely different ways, and I laughed during both of them. So did my son. Although he did shield his eyes during the gratuitous nudity scenes.

Tomorrow I'm going to whack the machine, and then take my son to lunch with a friend of mine. We'll both be celebrating our birthdays this month. Mine was last week. Hers was a few days ago. At least my sciatica has been fairly quiet. We'll see how it reacts to kickboxing tomorrow.

Still Got DOMS

I'll admit that I'm a bit surprised to still be experiencing DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) a day after a set of Walking Lunge...
