Cardio Days Are For Resting

I'm still a bit sore, and even though I'm getting into bed earlier, I still feel tired when the alarm sounds. It's because I'm not a morning person. I have my best dreams, my deepest sleep right before sunrise. The lumpy mattress isn't helping and I've been researching possible replacements.

No way I'm spending 3 grand on a mattress! Best Buy below it.
This month's Consumer Reports recommends a Casper brand for those looking at foam mattresses. A Sleep Number comes up as a Best Buy for adjustable inflatable mattresses. Or, I could just buy a mattress topper. They're a lot cheaper, but again, there are so many different brands, and types of toppers that I'm a bit paralyzed with information overload. I'm worried about foam mattresses retaining heat, although that's not an issue in the winter. The summer, however, will cause problems especially since we don't air condition the bed rooms. Gel-infused foam mattresses aren't suppose to have this problem. I like the idea of a foam mattress, but worry that I'm too sensitive. I had a memory foam pillow once, and it gave me a headache. My best pillows are super soft and squishy. Both my son and husband prefer slightly firmer models. Hhhmmmm.

We can mail order a mattress, but then we'll need to hire someone to cart the old one away. It's a super heavy king mattress with handles that have long since ripped off. No flipping or turning this baby. I really need to try these things out, lay down on one for a good 15-20 minutes before I decide what to do. Because, like the Princess and the Pea, there'll be no sleep if there's a perceived pebble in the bed.

I get to the gym and it's nearly noon. The hubs had two phone conference calls while he was at the house, and then he had to leave for Boston. His car blocks mine in the narrow driveway. While I'm at the gym, I see the televised report of a gunman at a Florida airport. My husband's company does work at all the major airports. Luckily, my hubs isn't doing any work in Florida for now. Next week he's in Boston and then Houston. The world is full of crazy people.

I just want a quick workout so today is a "cardio day". All it really means is that after 30 minutes on the cross-trainer, I do my basic core movements, and then hit the elliptical for 30 minutes. I use to sandwich all my weightlifting workouts between cardio, but I'm trying to do more with less these days. The first set of pull ups feels hard enough that I consider making it my only set. I stop at 80 reps for push ups because I'm adding Dand push ups (Hindu). But only after I do knee-ins and crunches. I knock out 30 reps but I could probably have done more. Probably. The gym is mostly empty since the HS kids are back in school. There might be a few college boys around for another few weeks though.

Once on the elliptical, I select the Intervals routine just as I turn my head and inadvertently swallow wrong. Which leads to gag reflexes and lots of loud coughing. How embarrassing! I have to restart the routine and pretend everything is fine. Everything really is fine, but every now and then when I'm not paying attention, I feel as if my epiglottis gets lazy and lets saliva drip into my windpipe. I'm probably at greater risk of pneumonia when I become elderly. Not a cheerful thought.

I choose the Intervals program because I haven't done it in a very long time, and because I'm a glutton for punishment. My legs are sore but I push anyway. I think about the old lady in the locker room who told me I'd make a terrible Personal Trainer because my workouts are too tough and everyone would hate me. She's probably my age. AARP has stopped trying to recruit me, but I'm tired of getting junk mail suggesting I need hearing aids or chairs that help you stand up. Seriously.

I'm drenched when I'm done, but I feel really good. A good hard cardio session cures a lot of blues. I always like to stretch the legs a little after a hard cardio routine so I'm at the Stretch Cage. Well, I might as well see how many pull ups I can do. I have to pause at rep 15 because my body is swinging too much. But then I resume my pace and manage to get to 35 reps. And my elbow didn't complain a bit. Nice!

The real trick is keeping my weight down over the weekend when I don't usually go to the gym, AND my hubs is around with all his terrible eating habits. He's back tomorrow afternoon unless something happens that he needs to address. When he's home, we eat and drink too much because I don't want to be the nutrition police when all he wants to do is kick back and relax. Today the gym scale reads 110.2 lbs. Only 3 more pounds to go to get to where I want to be. But I doubt if I'll be 110.2 on Monday. Yep, two steps forward and one step back...

Blissful Ignorance

111.2 lbs today. Getting there!
I'm not sure that I'm easily overwhelmed, but every now and then I find myself blinking in the headlights of oncoming traffic. Not literally, but emotionally when it comes to economics and morality. Recycling is a major sore point. Our town collects recycling once a week, but that is limited to newspaper, unfinished cardboard and a limited selection of plastics. And glass and aluminum.

The town doesn't want to recycle plastic bags although every shop provides them. The supermarket chains have special bins just to collect them. The town recycling company complains that the bags and other film plastics jam their sorting machines. Everything else gets put in the trash, which is no longer carted to a dump. Instead, I'm guessing, it gets sold by the ton to foreign countries for them to pick through. Tons of it winds up in the ocean. It breaks my heart to hear about sea turtles dying of starvation because they've ingested plastic bags, mistaking them for sea jellies, a favorite food. I toss all my bags into the recycling container instead of the trash because I can't be responsible for sea turtles starving to death!

I use my "reusable" shopping bags when I can, but eventually they get filthy and worn. Some things are best wrapped in plastic, like meat you want to keep separate from your produce! The freshly misted kale goes into a plastic produce bag. As do most of all the other veggies and fruits. Only melons, pineapples and bananas get to ride loose in the cart!

Not that it really matters. When I used to commute into NYC, I'd routinely separate the recyclables from trash. The train platforms had one huge bin with three cutouts: newspaper, bottles (plastic and/or glass), trash. One day I noticed a worker emptying the bins and putting fresh bags inside the bins. And he just mixed all the recyclables and trash together into one big trash can. Uh, so what was the point to having separate receptacles? Was it just to make us all feel virtuous, while in reality doing nothing?

All the conservation funds are great at asking you for donations, especially at the end of the year. I'm sure they do admirable rescue work, and important conservation lobbying. But I'd rather see towns do real recycling instead of paying it mere lip-service. The constant barrage of messages implying that we all have a personal responsibility for the planet, means that I have to turn off my moral compass every time I want to toss something in the trash. It's making me feel two steps from becoming a hoarder, where everything might have a use one of these days as long as it's not labeled garbage!

For a while I tried bringing back all my empty glass and plastic bottles to the supermarket to get the nickel deposits back. It does add up! But my hubs buys beer at so many different places that it's impossible to return everything in one trip. Eventually, I let him concede to forfeit the deposit even though he hates the idea of NYS keeping money they're not entitled to. Well, at least I can toss all the beer bottles into the recycling bin!

I get to the gym and it's just at that perfect time when the morning people have gone, and the lunch crowd hasn't arrived yet. However, all the cross-trainers are in use except the one closest to the front door. It's 27F and I don't want to feel the chill every time someone enters or exits. Instead, I do 30 minutes on the elliptical, followed by hammer grip pull ups and my basic core work. My left elbow is not at all happy today. I think one set of pull ups might suffice.

How to do a Muscle-Up
Whacking the machine yesterday has left me tired and a bit sore today. It's not a bad thing. The Smith is free but I'm not psyched for flat benching. Instead, I do a few sets of inclined benching. Even the bar feels heavy! Not a good sign. I've been playing with the idea of trying to do a muscle-up at the Smith one of these days. But not today. DB laterals also feel awfully heavy because 25 lbs is awfully heavy. I might have to drop back to 20 lbs for this move and just use 25s for the Reverse Inclined Flyes. I'm just happy I could do three sets of Rip Skulls and not drop anything on my head! I see Little R and Big Mustache and a few other sporadic regulars. The Mayor has been scarce this week. I don't miss him or that pervasive screeching voice.

The BlueTooth earbuds appear to be fully powered today, but they don't block the sound as well as my earplug earbuds, and they don't sound as good as the Sony MDR-J20s. It's bad when you can hear the two ladies on the ellipticals adjacent to yours, and they're not screaming at each other. I like it when there's no one around. I don't come for the social atmosphere, unlike B, who was wearing eye make-up last time I saw her at the gym. Well, she can't possibly be getting sweaty is all I think.

Keeping Focus

Down to 112.2 today
My sister sent me a link to Healio.com, a website that provides information and news for healthcare practitioners, specifically with a link to glaucoma treatments. Stem cell therapy is in the distant future, but there are other treatment options. Unfortunately most involve some sort of surgery. I read up on the two most prevalent, and both make my skin crawl. One involves cutting a drainage flap in the white of the eyeball. The other involves embedding a drainage shunt inside the eye. Both require abstaining from bending, lifting, straining for several weeks during recovery. Success is not guaranteed, and vision loss or blurry vision can result. Oh jeeze...

Meanwhile, I find myself particularly sensitive to the floaters in my eyes lately. My right eye feels as if I've got gunk on my lashes, so my vision feels a tad blurred on the upper periphery. It could just be my vision. Ugh. Scanning the latest research on glaucoma seems to show that sleeping on one's side increases eye pressure on the eye closest to the mattress, and that sleeping with your face squished, let's say between your arm and pillow, also increases measurable eye pressure. Oh good grief! I'm probably best off sleeping propped up. Double ugh.

It's foggy when I get to the gym, but that's better than the perpetual rain we had yesterday. Temps promise to rise into the high 40s. Eventually the sun makes an appearance. I warm up on the elliptical for 10 minutes, then whack the bag for three 5-round sets. The Nexersys is relatively well-behaved until I get to the Advance Rounds. The first three rounds are an exercise in patience as the machine arbitrarily flashes combinations, blanks, and under-scores kicks and digs, although I suspect I'm a little too quick for some combos. I actually have to wait a split second before striking the Dig Pad before it'll register. Otherwise the machine says I missed. Oh well.

I'm quite gratified that I'm not really tired by the end of 15 rounds. Dripping sweat yes. But tired? Not that much. So I do 30 minutes on the elliptical. It's not my best mileage, but pretty good considering I just spent an hour smacking the kickboxing machine. The last pull ups are kind of hard, especially the last few reps because I can feel it in my left elbow. Uh oh...

SONY MDR-J20s
A voice declares Low Battery just moments before my tunes abruptly end. It's good that I'm ready to go shower anyway. The iPod still has 2/3 of it's battery, but the BlueTooth ear buds are dead. My hubs says they should last at least 4-5 hours so perhaps I haven't charged them properly? I did put them on a micro-USB cable last night, but I'm not sure the ear buds actually charged. It's not that I've become a Luddite, but I hate buying new things just for the sake of having the latest gadget. I'm a firm believer in using something until it dies, unless it's just too horrible to deal with. So, I'm not completely sold on wireless earbuds yet. I'm still going to order those old Sony MDR-J20s because they had the best sound, and were the most comfortable, in spite of wires...

Resolve to Eat Better

Today was my first workout for 2017, and it's much like my workouts for the past several years. Except that I went "wireless" today. Okay, not totally wireless. But close. Or closer. I loaded some tunes on my new iPod nano because luckily my ancient Mac mini (circa 2012) has a newer version of iTunes (12.4) on it than my ridiculously ancient MacBook (2006). Other than the bulging battery that's messing up the tract pad below the keyboard, the laptop works fine. And had been the repository for all my iPod tunes. Oh well...

My hubs got me a red clip case for the new nano, and lent me some BlueTooth earbuds to test out. It's nice not to constantly have to adjust the wires stuck to the inside of your tank top, or accidentally pull out your earbuds because you got tangled in your wires. But these earbuds aren't as sound proof as my other head phones, forcing me to up the volume more than I'd like, and the wire that connects the two buds behind my head tends to stick to my sweaty neck and shoulders. So... better, but not ideal.

The iPod itself is longer and I'm not used to the clip. The old iPod had a very easy clip and I appreciated the machine's small, perfectly square dimensions. (I'm also partial to the silver zippo-looking finish, but that's just me.) My cardio mix ended and I was at a total loss as how to loop my tunes. It's not readily apparent and I find myself searching online. Isn't the internet a wonderful place? I would never have thought to tap the cover art to bring up a hidden menu regarding repeating songs and playlists. Why isn't this in the manual anyway? And yes, I read manuals. although lately I've taken to using both my reading glasses and a hand-held magnifier.

Because my hubs had to go to Boston in the middle of his vacation time, he took today off. I had an eye doc appointment at 8:30 but made it back in plenty of time to get my gym gear and head to the gym. He decided to come as well. Unfortunately, he forgot his towel so did not get to enjoy the hot shower afterwards. The eye appointment was for a Visual Field test, and I'm worried about my right eye. For the first time, the bright pin point lights weren't very bright. Is my vision fading in that eye? Thinking about things like that make me determined not to waste my time on things I don't want to do, and to focus on things that are fleeting. Going blind isn't a death sentence, but it sure sucks, especially for a visual artist.

My sis sent me a link to the number one rated glaucoma center (Bascom Palmer Eye Institute), which happens to be in Miami, Florida. My hubs wants me to make an appointment right away, but I'm not really sure what this will accomplish. I need to do more research.

My hubs is done with his workout before I'm done with mine. I did do 30 min of cardio on the elliptical since all the cross-trainers were occupied. And push ups, pull ups, crunches and planks before heading to the Smith for RDLs and RG BB Rows. I'm finding that my forearms and elbows are less forgiving on the RG BB Rows these days, necessitating a thumbless hook-like grip even though I'm using Versa Gripps.

I'm not sure if it's age or something more nefarious when it comes to my extremities now that my heels are going numb as I lay in bed. Maybe it's the mattress? I'm particularly sensitive to the hard edge and springs I can feel through the 25+ year old bedding. And I know this because my hubs and I decided to "camp" in our living room by the wood stove while our son was at a sleepover. We have a large inflatable mattress that I found quite comfortable. It's probably the first time in ages that I've managed to sleep on my side without my shoulder and arm falling numb! The hubs, however, needed more support. Oh well...

I see a few regulars in the gym while I'm working out. Shaggy keeps pacing next to me. Big Mustache stares oddly after I chat briefly with my hubs. My hubs has his own routine and he's done by the time I get to the Seated Cable One-Arm Rows. I tell him three sets and then I'll be ready to leave. He complains he's hungry and wants to go to lunch. I tell him we need to buy milk and other groceries. He'll just have to wait. Well, it gives him time to do some core and stretching. One of these days I'll walk him through one of my stretch routines, but I don't think he'll be able to follow it. Because he's not only much bigger than I am, he's not nearly as flexible.

I think I'll whack the machine tomorrow... The gym scale tells me 113.0 lbs. Not horrible, but it could be so much better. I take a few selfies and think I look like a thug! If I want to drop this bulk, I'll need to be much more responsible with my eating habits. Like only eating when I'm hungry. Unfortunately, I tend to feel light-headed and unfocused before I feel hungry. Not good at all! I don't like having to eat by the clock, so having better snacks might help. Nuts aren't agreeing with me lately. Not sure if it's the macademias or the cashews. I suspect it's the high fat content, because, like the dog, I tend not to process fats very well. Doesn't mean I won't get fat. Just means there's a lot of foods that disagree with me. Oh well...

My Hubs is Making Me Fat

I've only gotten myself to the gym 3x this week. Yesterday was a rain-soaked miserable day and I never got out of my pajamas. Not even to walk the dog. I could tell my son wasn't feeling so good when he fell asleep in the middle of the afternoon on the sofa. He normally never naps. My hubs and I went to the gym this morning, and let my son sleep in. He was still asleep when we got back!

I could've done a combo Push-Pull day, mixing benching with RDLs or BB Rows, but I decided that today was just going to be Push! After 30 min on the elliptical, I knocked out my pull ups, push ups and crunches. And then, because we had a bit of a time crunch, I skipped planks and knee-ins and moved towards the weights. The old man I call Ming The Merciless was on the Smith, so I settled onto a flat breaker bench. Unexpectedly, he came over to tell me that he had just one more set. How nice! I guess the regulars know who I am, and what I like to use, even if I'm not chatting with any of them. The Mayor is absent, but I see Skinny J with someone who might be his wife. My hubs is off doing his own shoulder workout. We rarely have any interaction at the gym because we both have our own routines.

Flat benching starts to twinge my right shoulder at just 120 lbs so that's my max for today. 25 reps at 90 lbs is work, but not impossible. The Inclined Benching is also hard today, probably because I haven't fully recovered from whacking the kickboxing machine on Wednesday. Actually, my quads are kind of sore too!

DB Lateral Raises super set with Reverse Inclined Flyes are almost impossible. I muscle through them, glad that I'm facing the mirror and there's no one close by to see me grimace. A middle-age guy I've never seen before, with a big head like Hulk Hogan, stares after I take my hoodie off and drape it over the bench. I don't like laying on the bench without something clean between me and it. Like my freshly laundered hoodie.

I've been eating rather poorly all holiday break, between the pulled pork tacos with too many salty condiments, to the meatball pizza my hubs brought home the other night. I'm slated to make pot roast again for New Year's Eve supper. Still, I gasp a little when the gym scale reads 113.2 lbs. Ugh. I don't normally eat this badly, but it's hard to tell my hubs that I don't want to snack on cheese and crackers when he's laid it all out in front of the TV. And our newest favorite show is Canada's Worst Drivers. Seriously. We stream it off the Kodi device, and watch shows like Downton Abbey and Murdoch Mysteries, as well as movies like Moana, and Magical Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The new Lands End workout pants seem better now that they've been washed. Not quite so clingy. I dragged my son off to Kmart and bought him two pairs of sneakers for school and kung fu. And myself two more sports bras. I was quite pleased to see that Everlast has sizes XL, 2XL and 3XL. And somehow, they've changed their sizing so that I'm good with just an L. I love the fact that Kmart prices are cheaper than going to Marshall's. The bras were $9 apiece, which is great considering that they have removable no-peek padding! My son's sneakers listed at $30 but rang up at $20 apiece. Awesome considering how fast he seems to be popping out of his clothes...

I've totally forgotten that I have an eye doc appt on Tuesday at 8:30 am. Okay, I might still make it to the gym though... My hubs is off Mon and Tuesday since he had to work this past Wednesday. He's happy enough. But I need to get this bulking checked, and but quick!

Mid-Week Workout

My hubs found out that he needed to be in Boston this morning before 7:45 am so he left around 4 am, way before I was awake. He didn't get home until this evening, and brought pizza! Yaaay! Meanwhile, I went to the gym, then retrieved my son to do a week's worth of errands in a few hours before the nor'easter hits us tomorrow. Hopefully, it'll just be rain...

new pants
The gym is only partly crowded at 10:30 am. The kids don't show up until closer to 12:30, when I assume they've rolled out of bed. I do my 10 minutes on the elliptical to get the blood moving, and then plant myself in front of the Nexersys. I'm there for over an hour since it takes me time to wrap my hands, and I take a few minutes between sessions. Each round is 3 minutes plus 1 minute of rest. I set my programs for 5 rounds at each level, so that's 20 minutes per level and 3 levels. If anyone's waiting for me to be done after a single 3-minute round, well, they're out of luck. Personally, I don't see the point of just boxing a round or two, but I'm kind of compulsive.

I'm wearing new gym pants I bought from Lands End. They're too shiny to wear anywhere but the gym because of all the spandex. And they're clingy. But they're comfortable enough to wear kickboxing. I'm a bit bummed that they're a tad long even though they're a Petite 28" inseam. Maybe I'm shrinking? It's just annoying how the pants cling to my ankles and need to be folded up half an inch...

I do 15 minutes on the elliptical, using Program 1. Then a quick set of pull ups before showering and changing. Meanwhile my son texts me if I'm done yet. He got a lot of video games for Christmas, and a big sheep pillow from the Hearth & Plow catalog. Because, inexplicably, he loves sheep and lambs. Which means he refuses to eat lamb chops. It's okay. A boy can have quirks.

My hubs really spoils me. He got me the sheepskin steering wheel cover I wanted (my son didn't have any problems with that), because while I have heated seats in my car, my hands are always pained by how cold the wheel is, even with gloves on. He also bought me gloves. And a sheepskin seat belt cover. And red plaid flannel shirts (I asked my son for a specific one from LLBean and I got that, but my hubs decided he liked a different pattern and got that as well), and a new iPod.

My favorite -- 6th generation nano
3rd gen iPod -- needs a case
I don't need an iPod. I have my old 6th gen nano (which was originally meant to be a watch from what I understand) with the handy clip that I use to affix to my waistband. Oh hell, I still have my iPhone 3 and two 3rd gen iPods, one with Kidz Bop music on it! This new one doesn't come with a clip, but it's a beautiful cinnamon red, and has Bluetooth. Which means I can use wireless earbuds. It also means I'd need to load all my music on to it from my ancient MacBook. I'm thinking I need to transfer all my files onto a USB drive anyway... But I need an iPod holder because, as I explained to my hubs, women's gym clothes don't have pockets! Ugh... My hubs was kind enough to order me a protective case that comes with a clip. Also in red!
the latest nano with new case

And what did I buy him? Several cool T-shirts with gaming logos on them, and two books on Newfieland, otherwise known as Newfoundland, Canada. Because he likes listening to their radio shows. Everything else, I gave him before Christmas because it was camping gear... Oh well.

I Hate the Crowded Holidays

My hubs and I got to the gym a bit late on Monday. And it was soooo crowded with faces I'd never seen before. I guess folks are getting to their New Year's Resolutions early. I did manage to do 30 min of cardio, and my basic core warm up, which means a set of pull ups, push ups, crunches, knee-ins and planks.

But there were literally no benches available, with three boys to a station tag-teaming. An older guy in the Smith machine, but only there to use the Inclined Bench for his DB Presses... And I'm not the type to interrupt a workout, so I'm done at that point. I'm literally tripping over bodies and unfamiliar faces. Next time we need to go much much earlier in the day! My hubs is happy enough. He complains he can't straighten his arms out from Friday's Back and Bicep workout. Tomorrow he has to go to Boston for the day so I'll head off to the gym solo and let my son sleep in. It IS Christmas break after all, and I think I can see him growing right before my eyes. I'm kidding. Or not.

I made a pot roast for Christmas Eve dinner but it took so long that we had it the next day for Christmas lunch. It was a crock pot recipe which actually turned out well, except I can never get the gravy right. Thank goodness for Knorr packaged brown gravy mix. Seriously. We ate most of a 5 lb pot roast with boiled red potatoes and gravy. Yesterday my hubs made kalua pork, which is the base for pulled pork: salt, liquid smoke and 10 hrs in a 250F oven. We have another smaller pot roast planned for New Year's Dinner. I can't believe the year is over...

Didn't go to the gym today. Instead we went to the movies because it's $5 Tuesdays. The theater was packed with several films selling out. We didn't see the Star Wars movie, or Assassin's Creed. No, we went to see Sing because I wanted to see something happy and silly. And it was delightful. But no original tunes. Oh well...
