Apparently Weight Lifting is Good For Your Brain

I took yesterday off and did a bunch of chores, actually fell asleep on the sofa with the dogs and made up my sleep deficit. But of course, this meant that I wasn't really sleepy when I went to bed later. Bummer. Just can't win the sleep battle.

All us gym rats know that exercise is good for us so it's amusing and validating to read research articles stating that exercise is not only good for your body but your brain as well. Well, duh. You know blood flow and oxygen and all that... but yesterday, I read an article suggesting that weight lifting actually helps to mitigate Alzheimer's. Click here to read the article.

This, of course, gives me greater incentive to push some weights today. This will also be the third day this week that I've made it to the gym, which is challenging cuz it's so easy to find other things to do instead. I'm tired and made adjustments to my routine by cutting 10 minute off the cardio program, but compensated by doing Intervals. Because that's not something I do regularly, I find it much more difficult that the standard three programs on the Precor elliptical.

I get a set of pull-ups and I'm slightly disappointed. Better than 15 but not 20 like last week. The half pull-up means I pushed and couldn't quite do the complete rep. Some days I have a series of half reps, but not today. There's a handful of people in the free weight area. I search for the two Nautilus benches. One is in use and the other one is in a bench cage. There are other adjustable benches and I try to adjust one to a shallower inclined angle but it's stuck in the 90 degree position, bolt upright and totally unusable for me. Ugh. I'm about to head over to the bench cage several yards away when the fellow on the bench close to the DB rack exits the area. Yaaay! I glom onto it like wet paint.

You can always tell newbies in the free weight area: they're the ones doing their thing literally right in front of the weight rack. Okay, even some seasoned folks are that inconsiderate, but they're just lazy butt holes. Most of us know to step back a few feet so as not to block access to the rest of the racks. There's a new face in the gym today and she seems unsure as to what she's doing and where she should be doing it. Hopefully she'll figure it out, or come at a different time in the day. Because half the time she's in my way.

I escaped to the Aerobics Room once I finished my sets. It wasn't empty which surprised me. It's pleasantly warm outside and was only moist in the early morning (when I was at the dog park with my puppers). Even though I'm tired, I was still able to complete the entire routine including Walking Lunges and ending with a quick Wall Sit. That only lasted 90 seconds, but that was quite enough.

Mid-Week and It's Okay

I spent hours yesterday trying to get my new color photo printer to communicate with my laptop via WiFi. My old photo printer hasn't worked since before the pandemic so it's been more than 5 years. I took the old one to Staples because they accept e-waste, and then I ordered an inexpensive model from Canon. Not the best printer, but definitely affordable, and able to accept 13x18 paper.

I can print images with a USB cable but that requires me actually sitting right next to the printer, and that's not something I always want to do. Especially since the machine is advertised as being WiFi accessible. Eventually, I get a dialogue window asking me for the printer password. Uh, since when do home printers have or need passwords?

I put a call into the Canon service center, and after a good long (20 minute) wait with peppy piped-in Muzak, I get an actual tech on the phone. Who then walks me through the process of getting my printer recognized on our home WiFi system. That takes another 90 minutes. The tech tells me that I'm not the first person to call with this issue, especially since there is nothing documented about this included with the device. But apparently, a few years ago a law was passed that required manufacturers of WiFi connected devices to have randomly generated passwords. I had no idea!

Used to be you could enter the device's serial number as a password, but now it's a complete unknown, unless you know the secret number of taps to use on the WiFi button. Then the printer takes a few minutes and eventually prints out a sheet of info with the super secret password at the very bottom. Jeeze, you'd think this was an issue of national security. There's literally no documentation to tell the average consumer how to access this. You NEED to contact tech support. Or be satisfied with a hard-wired USB cable.

I get to the gym later than I'd like, but earlier than Monday. Today was a cardio day and I had access to all the machines I like to use. I saw a lot of regulars, people I haven't seen in a long time because they normally come earlier in the day. While my time on the elliptical wasn't quite as good as Monday, it's still over 2.8. Pull-ups were good this week for the first two sets. I didn't push it for the 3rd set and was satisfied with 15 reps. Cuz, I was really truly tired by then.

What's surprising is that I'm not sore at all from all those push-ups on Monday. Nope. Not even a little bit. Maybe, if I really pushed and made it to 75, I'd probably be sore. But I'm not supposed to be doing stressful movements like that, according to my glaucoma doc. So I guess not. I was so tired that I started to lose count when doing my standard push-ups. I think I got to 30 but I'm not sure. I got to a point, spaced out and started again and got to 10. So ten plus where ever the hell I was. Maybe 15, maybe 20. I don't remember. Ugh.

After air squats, I decided to see if I could still do side lunges. It's a staple stretch and it's been a long time. As long as it didn't aggravate my sciatica I'm okay with it. The knees were a bit stiff but in general it was an okay movement and nothing hurt when I did them. Tomorrow I'll find out whether there's any repercussions.

At home, I dug out my BB collars and tossed them into my gear bag, just in case. They're more bulky than heavy, unlike a spring collar. But at least I can secure plates to a bar should the one I want to use be unavailable. Always best to be prepared. Being an Eagle Scout mom has left its mark.

My Weather-Induced Brain Fog

The weather has been crazy lately, with me lighting a blazing fire in the wood stove last night to take the chill off and temps peaking today at 71F. There was heavy fog last night and early this morning, which always has an impact on my sinuses and gives me a fuzzy headache that's more brain fog than actual pain. It's very annoying. It makes it hard to focus on simple tasks and everything seems to take longer to do. But eventually I do get through my list...

Got to the gym really late today: it was just past 1 pm! Ugh. I managed to grab elliptical #1 just as Wind Breaker entered. Lucky me. I had been wondering what other cardio machine I'd be willing to slog through if the elliptical machines weren't available. I mean, there's always the cross-trainers but I limit myself to 15 minutes on them because I'm not fond of exiting those machines with numb toes and feet. I pushed myself really hard on the elliptical. And I got a decent result, meaning past 2.8, so I was happy. My FitBit was close to showing me a low battery warning so I just took it off and left it home on the charger. I'm starting to find it annoying to wear because it catches my sleeve when I need to push them up, which is quite often cuz I have short arms.

I'm running late so I'm doing an abbreviated workout today. One course of cardio. One set of pull-ups. Luckily I manage to match reps from last week. Twenty is a good number! Off to the Aerobics Room which is surprisingly  crowded. The Senior class has long gone but there are four people in there I've never seen before. I guess the weather was too iffy to exercise outside. Everything is pretty much routine, except for the push-ups that I told myself I'd challenge when I got bored. Today's an abbreviated workout so I've skipped two other cardio courses and two other sets of pull-ups. Good to go!

My push-up stance isn't standard classic since I have issues with my elbows and have to spread my hands fairly wide apart. That tends to limit the upward motion of the push-up but at least my elbows don't click and hurt afterward. I can push past 25 rather easily and I tend to move pretty quickly (if you remember previous posts from years ago where I videoed my push-ups). I didn't need to slow down until I hit the 43rd rep and then it was a tad more difficult. I made it to 50, and it didn't feel awful. I'll probably be sore tomorrow though. My glutes and hammies were sore again for two days after Friday's Walking Lunges. And oddly, so were my lats, but just a tad. I guess those pullover movements have some value.

I take a quick pix in the locker room to see if I still have biceps after all these years of not doing any DB or BB curls. Of course, if I was leaner it'd be easier to see, but yep, still got biceps with just doing hammer grip pull-ups every now and then... Cool. The sun came out and my brain fog was gone by the time I left the gym. Win win.

Modifications

I finally made it back to the gym after unexpectedly needing to take yesterday off. When I had the chance to get my kitchen sink light fixed, I jumped at the chance. Even better that it was an electrician I know from both Scouts and the dog park. (He was off this week; when work is slow, the union rotates people so that everyone gets a chance to earn for a few weeks and are then furloughed for a week or more.) Better yet, he had a new ballast in his car and could replace the one in my fixture, which has been there since 1992.

I asked what I owed him for parts, time and labor, and he said no charge. OMG! All he needs is my husband's help and advice with the Scout Troop he's agreed to lead, at least until his own son ages out at 18. Since my husband had really gotten into Scouts to the point of earning the Wood Badge, he has a big binder full of Troop planning guides and tips. My husband is doubly thrilled to go with the Troop to the 61st Annual West Point Camporee in a few weeks.

I had to stop off at my kid's dermatologist to pick up some refills for his acne. I'll be mailing a care package out tomorrow with his new aligners from his orthodontist, and the shower comb he forgot in the bathroom, and whatever else I can stuff into the package. I got to the gym well past noon and the parking lot was crowded! Uh oh! There was an unfamiliar person on elliptical #3 but #1 was clear so I was good to go! I did want to change things up though so first thing is to shorten the time to 20 minutes (from 30) since cool-downs are always 5 on this machine. And I did the Interval program last Friday, so that's what I did today. Not that my body would've remembered that. It was godawful hard.

Wind Breaker shows up just as I'm wiping down the elliptical (cuz I'm done). I'm pleasantly surprised when I get 20 reps for hammer-grip pull-ups. Yaaay me! Then off to the free weight area. It's moderately crowded and both Nautilus benches are in use. Ugh. Plan B is to use a regular flat bench for BB triceps work (skull crushers and rip skulls), and some DBs for Lateral Raises. And the only 30 lb solid state BB is being used by a guy alternating between DB curls and wrist curls with the BB. I grab the 20 lb BB and spend a few minutes looking for all the loose disc magnet weights that are stuck to various racks and pieces of equipment. It's either that or do something else entirely. I could always look for the V-bar handle and see how I fare with the cable push-downs. Haven't done those in years!

I do manage to find two 2.5 lb disc magnets and four 1.25 lb ones. That's the additional 10 lbs I need and I'm happy that the magnets stay on the ends of the BB as I do the triceps routine. I'm still amazed that it's so much easier to do 24 alternating reps per set (Skull Crusher/Rip Skull) than it is to do 12 rep sets of Skull Crushers followed by another 12 rep set of Rip Skulls. After each superset, I get up and do a set of standing DB Lateral Raises.

To those who wonder why I don't grab an EZ bar and slap some small plates on it: the EZ bar is about 15 lbs, so I could put 7.5 lbs on either end, but then I'd need collars to keep the plates on. And I literally cannot use the spring clip collars because my hands and fingers are too small to squeeze the clips open! (I cannot emphasize how annoying and impractical it is to have such small hands and fingers!) When I was younger and lifted heavier, I actually invested in collars I could manage. They weighed 1/4 lb each and I kept them in my gear bag. Yes, I still have them, and should I ever return to lifting more frequently, I'll dig out my Rogue collars. But I'm not lugging them around on a lark.

I was a bit worried about push-ups when I entered the Aerobics Room, but those were fine. Actually, everything was fine. So much that I decided to finally do Walking Lunges across the room and back. And that was fine, although I have to say that these green Saucony sneakers are my least favorite out of all my exercise footwear, mainly because they are the most likely to be uncomfortable at any given moment.

Which meant I almost fell over a few times because my forward foot didn't always land flat and square. Some days my other sneakers feel tight or the ankles are too high or the innersole feels wrinkly. But this pair feels just a bit narrower than the others so the sides of my feet are annoyed. Not consistently, but enough. I don't wear this pair very often, but they might still be the next pair to get "donated." It's too bad cuz Saucony used to be a reliable brand, but it's off my list now.

Spring Again

It has been cold enough for ice to form in the outdoor water bowl at the dog park, but that was temporary. In the upper 30s early in the morning, but warming to mid-50s by the afternoon. It rained all day yesterday and there was still a heavy blanket of fog this morning. My dogs were unhappy that no one else was the park, not even cars parked in the distant lot, and no one walking their pups along the walkways or running them on the ball field adjacent to the dog park. It was eerily desolate, except for all the bird songs.

I spent the past few days trying to organize my kitchen better (tossing out dozens and dozens of plastic take out containers because how many do you really need?) and trying to facilitate adoptions for my late cousin's two cats. I think a friend of mine from HS, who had a rudimentary relationship to my cousin while not actually being related, will foster one cat and have a family friend adopt the other one. The cats are not bonded to each other, were both rescued as ferals off the streets separately, and are both 98% black. It's been said that black cats and black dogs have the worst chances for adoption once they get put into the shelter system so we're all trying to avoid that situation.

I got to the gym later than I'd like after doing a few errands. It wasn't crowded at all, probably because the sun came out and it seemed nice outside. I hadn't been paying much attention to the FitBit so I was surprised to see those alarming orange words on its face: LOW BATTERY. I took the bracelet off after the first cardio session and tucked it into my gear sack. There's no point to wearing it if it's just going to buzz about being out of juice.

I managed to make it to 2.8 and that was satisfying. Better yet was making it to 18 reps for two sets of pull-ups. I had intended to attempt a third set, but the Stretch Cage was occupied by the time I was done with the Life Fitness cross-trainer. And I just don't have the patience to sit around and wait for it, so off to the Aerobics Room to finish. Thoughts of maybe attempting that third set afterward danced around in my head, but by the time I exited the Aerobics Room, the gym itself was filled with HS kids everywhere. Literally everywhere. Like it was a clubhouse. Which, maybe it is.

Meanwhile, I sent my sister a birthday gift and she sent me a pix of herself holding a very large 18-month old child: boyfriend's son's "new" baby. So I guess my sis is a gran now and they are babysitting while the younger family visits. What I really noticed, though, was the salt & pepper of her hair. Cuz she's younger than I am. But my brother also has a lot more gray than I do. His mother-in-law has jet black hair in her 80s, which she attributes to eating black sesame. I dunno; maybe she puts that in her hair?  I have gray hairs too, but not nearly as much as my younger sibs. Just lucky I guess.

Thrice this Week

Temps have dropped but that's to be expected for mid-March. It's a volatile month weather-wise. Enjoyed some mid-60s and now a plunge into the 30s. I guess the peepers have gone back to sleep. I'm not putting away my winter gear until May. Today, I put my parka on when I headed to the gym. Last week all I needed was a hoodie. There's definitely more people inside today but I'm still able to use Precor elliptical #1.

This will be my 3rd day at the gym this week! I'm trying to be more consistent, but I'm tired. Part of that is, of course, my lack of sleep due to discovering a new and entertaining limited series on Netflix: The Residence. I was bored last night and channel surfing. I like crime comedic mysteries and this promised to be one. Once I started watching, I was hooked by the snappy dialogue, great casting, and the mesmerizing special effects that had the audience zooming and zipping in and out of various rooms in the White House. (It reminded me of the really awesome holiday video post from the Biden White House this past December.) All this meant that I was up a lot later than I had planned.

I cut myself some slack as well as the cardio time by 10 minutes. And then I changed the program to Intervals, with me actually pedaling slower during the troughs and as fast as I could manage on the peaks. Halfway through, I decided that I needed to pedal backwards during the peaks but not the troughs. For the cool down, pedaled backward the entire 5 minutes. It felt harder than I'm used to and I just miss the 2 mile mark. My only solace is that I was actually able to increase my pull-up reps by 2!

The free weight area is more crowded than I'd like and I wonder if there's a school holiday. My town had schools closed for a special teacher training session. Not sure about the next town over since it's a different school district. I do my standard DB Shoulder routine without any issue, although my right shoulder has been a tad twingy lately. But by the end of the routine, the shoulder felt okay.

I enter the Aerobics Room and there is one person already there. I don't understand why people insist on taking a mat and placing it just a foot away from the pile when there is an entire empty room. It means that anyone else who wants to grab a mat has to gingerly pick their way around this person and their stuff littering the floor. Do they think this is home base and if they lay their mat down further away, they'll get tagged out? It really feels like laziness. But good god, you're in a freaking gym to exercise. Maybe walk a few yards out?

Early Spring Means Empty Gym

The little peeper frogs have been singing full blast for the past several nights. It's a definite harbinger of warmer weather. I've also seen robins running across the grounds and perched in trees that have yet to bud out their leaves. It's warm enough that the back doors to the gym are wide open for additional air flow, and the gym has barely a dozen people in it. I get to choose elliptical #1 and just manage to log 2.8. It's a regular day, so I'm doing the full cardio routine: three cardio sessions and three sets of pull-ups.

I'm so tired by the last cardio set that I can't make it to rep 17. I'm just happy to have made it past a dozen. I know that if I had held back on the cross-trainer I'd have more energy for pull-ups. I was just too tired to fight for two more reps. I really need to go to sleep earlier and log in more than a bare 6 hours. But even on days I get to the dog park late, it's hard for me to sleep more than 6 hours. Until I can't take it anymore and crash on the sofa with dogs on either side...

By the time I get to the Aerobics Room, I'm really tired and the room is refreshingly cool. The Senior Class has been gone for a few hours. And when I get to push-ups, I struggle getting to 25 without feeling my back wibble. To me that's kind of shocking, although intellectually, it shouldn't be. Do 35 minutes of cardio and a set of pull-ups, and everything afterward is cake. Part of me wants to see if I could make it to 50 push-ups and some point I'll probably give that a go. Preferably after a few days off.

Here's a short flick of peepers in case they're not endemic to your locale.

On Grieving

I had planned to go to the gym last Friday, on my birthday, but I had to field so many phone calls for my kid's upcoming medical appointments that I ran out of time and almost missed my opportunity to order the pie I'd been fantasizing about for months: white clam pizza with added clams, spinach and fresh garlic. There is one pizzeria two towns over that makes a really good pie and they had three out of four items. No one seems to offer fresh garlic anymore and I don't know why. It's not like it's exorbitantly expensive, or unpopular. In the end, I ate the first slice in my car, and the next slice I crushed my own fresh garlic cloves to add as a topping.

My cousin as a child
Saturday, the Ides of March, was promising to be a pleasant day when I got a call from a cousin on my mom's side of the family. We literally never talk, call or otherwise are in any communications, so I knew this was bad news. The only cousin on my mom's side that I'm sort of close to lives in Brooklyn, in her Chinese grandmother's house. And she had passed away last week from a massive heart attack. She lived alone with her cats, never married, had no kids, and was retired from her job at Mt. Sinai hospital. Her Chinese grandmother was her father's mom (and my grandmother's twin sister). Her mom was part Sioux, and her grandmother, Rosebud Yellow Robe was noted in the history books as a daughter of Chief Chauncey Yellow Robe who negotiated a treaty with Grover Cleveland. Rumor has it that Rosebud's second husband Al Frantz worked with Orson Welles and might've had a hand in the infamous last words of Citizen Kane.

My cousin Karen was a few years older than me but we stayed in touch via social media. She'd been to my wedding, and a summer party when my kid was a wee tot. Her aunt knitted us a baby blanket, much the way my grandmother would've back in her day. We still have it, of course. And while I'm not completely surprised that she had health issues, I had no idea that she would die so suddenly. A massive heart attack from a blocked stent is what I was told by her closest friend who was also her Emergency Contact. Other cousins are traveling from upstate to feed her cats and try to figure out about the house. It's a big mess.

And I'm so sad. I have all these stories my mom would tell me and my siblings about her best friend, Buddy (Karen's mom) who showed her the wonders of Greenwich Village, collected gingko nuts to make into necklaces, but who also suffered from severe mental illness, in part due to the ECT she was subjected to when her husband (my mom's favorite first cousin) died in a horrible auto crash (there were no air bags back then). She had freaked out and smashed all the glass baby bottles (my cousin was just a few months old).

Buddy confessed to my mom that after "treatment," she became afraid of everything, lost so many memories. My dad didn't like her, but he was a snob, which meant he really didn't like anyone, especially anyone my mom found interesting. My mom would try to keep in touch but this was before cell phones and the internet. Aunt Buddy became reclusive, and a cat lady. When I lived in Brooklyn, sometimes I would run into her pulling her shopping cart to the Pathmark supermarket miles away to buy cheap cat food, while wearing flip-flops in the dead of winter.

Rosebud Yellow Robe
My cousin Karen had a lot of demons. When her grandmother Rosebud passed away, she became a recluse herself. With the support of family, she eventually recovered in bits and parts. But she's gone now, and I feel such sadness, as if all the stories from my mother's side are all falling into a black hole, sucked into a giant void, never to be seen again. There is no continuation to Karen's story. No light emanating forth, no powerful X-rays escaping. I think this is grief. Or at least, this is my grief.

I make it to the gym on a rainy, windy St. Patrick's Day but it's for the bare basics, a super abbreviated workout. Cardio, a set of pull-ups, and core exercises done not in the Aerobics Room (because there's a Senior class in there), but at the entrance where the "functional" gym equipment is. I'm not too upset that I only get 2.78 on cardio because I do get 17 at pull-ups and probably could've squeezed out another half or two, but I'm in a hurry.

And because I've only done one set of pull-ups and only one course of cardio, the push-ups and air squats are surprisingly easy. So easy that I knock out 30 reps of push-ups and could easily have gone on for longer. And then I have to bolt back to shower and change. Cuz I have to take my kid to a doc appointment, but first I have to go home and wake him up!

No gym tomorrow as we had to rearrange our schedule now have two appointments back to back. Maybe we'll catch a $5 Tuesday movie after that's all done...

Before I'm Officially a Senior Citizen

Temps are cooling slightly but everyone is in agreement that Spring is here. There were robins all over the ball field this morning when I took pups to the Bark Park. I managed to make it to the gym and had a satisfying workout, even managing to make it to 2.8 on the elliptical. I was a little concerned because I had tweaked my knee on Tuesday by leaning into it while it was hyper-extended and then it was sore all day. Yes, part of my skin disorder appears to include laxity in connective tissues, which translates into loose joints. It's why I'm susceptible to TMJ issues if I'm not careful and carelessly roll over to sleep on my side, but usually I wake up because my ear hurts from the weight of my head smushing it.

I did a set of pull-ups and then found a usable adjustable bench for the DB Shoulder workout. The gym was mostly empty until the HS let out and then filled with teenagers. I got a satisfying workout done and even managed to grit my teeth through a full two minutes of Wall Sits. I saved the Walking Lunges for tomorrow because it takes me almost 3 days to get over the soreness in my glutes and hamstrings. That soreness makes me feel old like nothing else.

Tomorrow I'll officially be a (gasp) Senior Citizen. I plan to go to the gym anyway, maybe do an Intervals program on the elliptical. I am looking forward to getting a specialty pizza from an out of the way pizzeria: clams, white sauce, garlic, spinach, bacon. I've been drooling over the thought of this for months now... My kid is carpooling home tomorrow and will be in late. No doubt they will have snacked since it's a 6-hour drive, but I'm sure leftover pizza will be welcomed cuz I can't eat a whole pie.

My kid is only home for a week for Spring Break so there's a lot of appointments, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to get to the gym. I do have a lot of corned beef in the fridge and freezer though, having taken advantage of the grocery store sales and limits. Got to buy when it's cheap and plentiful, cuz otherwise prices are insane. Do I sound like a Depression Era kid? I wasn't but I was raised by people who did survive all that...

Daylight Saving Still Kicking My Butt

My glutes were sore for two days after doing Walking Lunges on Friday. The loss of an hour of sleep on Sunday didn't help at all. I'm not a morning person, although my bedroom faces southeast and eventually the sun smacks you in the face through a half-moon window over regular windows that have curtains. The half-moon window is bare. I skipped the gym yesterday: generally, Mondays are crowded as people try to make up for an indulgent weekend. It was fairly quiet today, and since it was also really warm outside peaking in the mid 60s, a lot of folks chose to enjoy the great outdoors. I think the weather groundhog was annoyed at being woken up and just lied about how long Winter was going to last. Seems like Spring is already here.

I've been staying later at the dog park to give the pups a chance to play with friends who don't show up until 10 AM. Unfortunately, a dog who doesn't get along with one of my guys, has recovered from the dog fight he started, and showed up before the friends did. Luckily, the dog park was designed with two attached but separate and smaller fenced enclosures, and my boys got to do their social doggy things with their pals.

This means I'm getting to the gym later than usual, and I'm always tempted by this point, to be doing something else. Like, I really need to get my car washed. But that's out of my way and such a hassle. I might wait until I have my kid with me because it's really annoying having these car wash guys try to flirt with me. Apparently they think I look South American. Which is kind of surprising, although when I was a teen, my mom permed my hair badly and all the Puerto Rican boys started trying to get my attention. Ugh.

I have my choice of elliptical machines but I'm tired and my glutes are still a tad sore. This is literally the worst I've done on the Precor in a long time! Not that I was surprised though since I can normally pedal at 150 strides per minute or better, and today I was struggling to get past 145. When I'm zipping along, I can reach 220 for several seconds, but that's all out sprinting during a HIIT cardio program. I haven't done THAT in a really long time, like in years. It's punishing, and I've not been bored enough to tackle that type of challenge lately.

Last week I did slightly better at pull-ups, but considering how much my cardio sucked today, I was happy that I was only off by a rep for each set. The core routine was fairly routine except I lost count doing push-ups so I'm just assuming I knocked out 25 reps. I tend to lose track of the count at 15-16 and I'm not sure why.

It does help if I actually count out loud though because I can remember what I said, or the sound of what was said, even if my brain is too addled to recognize what the number is. I find this especially true when I'm entering a code that got texted to me and I have to type it in somewhere else. If I say it aloud, I can remember the sequence so much better than if I try to visually memorize it. Weird, right?

I Hate Daylight Saving Time

On Sunday, my phone and most other devices will automatically reflect the loss of an hour, meaning we will be waking an hour earlier. I still have to adjust a few time settings manually, like the microwave and the clock inside my car. The dogs will be happy to go to the park earlier. And since I tend to stay up late and get up late, I might not really notice. So, maybe it won't be so bad.

I only made it to the gym twice this week. Monday was an all cardio program with pull-ups in between. Since it's been a while, I decided to do the combo: cardio, pull-ups, DB shoulders and end with the core and body weight movements. I even felt guilty enough to add Walking Lunges and a cursory attempt at Wall Squats. I didn't make it past 90 seconds and I blame the Walking Lunges. I'm gonna feel those tomorrow.

We had some torrential rain so I'm glad I had the sump pump replaced and everything fixed in my below ground, unfinished half basement. The stream along side our road is gushing and I can hear it as I walk the dogs at night even though we are a good 40-50 yards from the tiny, irregular and rocky waterway.

I'm in the midst of composing a scathing letter to my bank. It's a small local bank but that's no excuse for the lack of planning on their part for shutting down their strip-only ATM/debit cards without any warning. Yes, I have one of those ancient cards that has no chip. It worked fine until Friday when it was declined everywhere except at the ATM. That would mean carrying cash to pay for everything. Which I can do, but then there's a lot of leftover change to carry around in my bag.

I contacted the bank and their online customer support got snotty by telling me that notices were posted atop the monthly bank statements. Uh, the bank hasn't mailed out statements in years. Okay, then if I log onto the bank website I'll see everything on the "dashboard" so why would I want to download a "statement" which I'd actually have to look for and download. And why wasn't this important information posted on the bank's Message Center which is where the bank posts notices about banking scams and promotional items. No answer from customer support.

I call the bank on Monday to ask if I need to come in to get a new card. The old lady voice at the other end assures me that I'll get a new card since my chip is broken. No, no, my card never had a chip. No, that's not possible. I tell her I don't want to be hit with the $10 service fee for not using my debit card/ATM card 10 times in a month since I don't actually have a card that works now and a new month has started. Oh, no, you have 6 months. Uh, no, every month I see a line that says monthly fee charged with a $0 amount, which leads me to believe the Bank charges monthly.

I go to the dog park. When I return, there's a voicemail from the Bank. It's the old lady apologizing. The bank staff just got an email that morning telling them the non-chip debit/ATM cards have been deactivated, but new cards would be sent out. Uh, shouldn't the bank have sent out new cards first before killing all the old cards? And an actual notice to the customers and staff BEFOREHAND would've really helped. It's not rocket science.

Yeah, I worked for a bank once a long time ago. There's supposed to be people who plan this before enacting all the changes. Should I blame Gen Z? I got told a few weeks ago, when I referred to myself as a tail-end Boomer, that we're different from "leading edge Boomers". From 1954-1965, our generation is also known (apparently only to some) as Generation Jones, as in "keeping up with the Jones." I think that actually tracks since I feel like I have less in common with a lot of the older Boomers, and more kinship with younger generations. Or, maybe it's just me. Refusing to grow old. (This week I'm the same age as my brother!) Next week, I'll be technically "old" although I'm not sure I want to refer to myself as a Senior Citizen. Even the term makes me shudder...

It's Not Just Cardio

I call the majority of my workouts All Cardio, but in reality, it's a lot of cardio mixed with other movements to achieve a more or less well-rounded whole body routine. Cardio is for general health and good for core and leg muscles. Pull-ups are great for the upper body. The core routine that includes Dead Bugs, push-ups and air squats should touch virtually every muscle group. I'm not pushing to failure so this routine is merely upkeep, not progressive. Which, considering I'm going to be "officially old" in a little more than a week, isn't bad. Aging well takes work. I wish I was more dedicated to it though. Last week I only made it twice to the gym. Still hopeful I'll make it thrice this week, but who knows...

Didn't quite make it to 2.8 and I was on elliptical machine #1, which surprised me considering how late I got to the gym. But at 1 pm on a Monday, it's pretty empty. The Senior class has gone home and the HS kids haven't shown up yet. Wind Breaker is actually already pedaling on #3. I guess someone else was on #1 before I got there. Technically, I should've done program 2 but I spaced out and selected #1 out of habit so that's the program I did.

It's still winter so the air is cold and dry, my skin has developed fissures in spite of being slathered with petrolatum. On the elliptical, my back and scalp start to itch as I overheat just under the sweat threshold. Which means, until I actually bust a sweat, my skin reacts badly with intense pinprick itching. I scratch a lot until I get relief. I've tried applying moisturizing lotions to my skin before hitting the gym but that doesn't help. I feel very high maintenance a lot of the time.

Pull-ups are better this week and that makes me happier. Sweating profusely also makes me happier because I've stopped itching. Itching is very distracting! While I keep parameters on the step machine the same, I added a few minutes to the cross-trainer to round that out to 15 minutes. That might be my excuse for getting 2 less reps at pull-ups.

Definitely no gym tomorrow as I have a meeting with my tax prep person, and I'm not anticipating any good news. So, maybe I'll be back at the gym on Wednesday. It'd be good if I could get myself back to a 3 or even 4 day workout schedule, but honestly, I have so many other things to do that it's been easy to just not go... although my sciatica does complain when I don't go.

Actually, it's been acting up lately and I suspect it was a careless move on my part: an easy stretch that I should not be doing ever anymore -- sit crossed legged on the floor and lean forward. I can do it and rest my elbows on the ground in front of my feet, but I shouldn't because while it doesn't hurt when I do it, the movement inflames my sciatica and I'm in a bit of pain for a few days afterward. Hence the old adage: Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Unseasonably Warm

The dog park still has snow and ice but it's mostly a slippery muddy mess. Dogs don't care except that there were no other dogs to play with today. Maybe tomorrow. I've been having trouble getting to sleep at a reasonable hour, which means I'm getting up late too. I do get to the gym finally though, and it's relatively empty. I can use elliptical #1! Wind Breaker arrives halfway through my set. Later, when I glance up at the cardio platform, there are two more people on the Precors, which is the most I've seen in a while.

I haven't exercised since Monday so today is good for a cardio day with pull-ups. I'll do the mix set tomorrow. I saw my glaucoma doc on Tuesday, and she was happy with my IOPs being at 13-14, down from 17. It means the Durysta implants are working and she might take me off one more drop in a few months if the pressures stay steady. Of course, I had texted with my brother earlier and he told me his IOPs were down to 9. Nine! I've never gotten my pressures under 10 ever!

I'm happy I managed to push myself over the 2.8 mark on the Precor. And squeeze out enough pull-ups to make it past 12. I think everyone sets these internal challenges for themselves. After the second set of pull-ups, I briefly debate (with myself) whether to use the LifeFitness or the Octane cross-trainer. There's only one guy on the LifeFitness so it's not crowded, and I choose machine #1 which overlooks the "functional gym" section. My toes haven't gone numb using this in a while and I suspect it might be dependent on which sneakers I happen to be wearing. I have favorites, and they are New Balances. The Hokas are okay but not nearly as comfortable. I do have weird, sensitive, difficult fee and if your feet hurt, well, the whole world sucks.

It's been unseasonably warm for the past several days. Still slathering on petrolatum to prevent cold hives on my thighs, but the fissures keep forming on my fingertips. Which makes it painful to handle a lot of things without gloves on. Today temps reached 46F, but the weather app says it'll drop to 12 in a few days. Ugh. Well, it is still Winter.

I've finally started watching the new medical show that's gotten a lot of rave reviews, and I have to say that yes, I'm hooked. The Pitt is really good. But I really like medical shows anyway. (Of course, I also like crime shows -- watching a lot of dubbed Danish/Swedish cop shows. Murder in a Small Town is dedicated to Donald Sutherland and not Nordic.) But my history goes as far back to Ben Casey, Dr. Kildare, Marcus Welby MD, Medical Center, and ER of course. Not really much of a St. Elsewhere fan, but I did love MASH. I've watched the entirety of The Good Doctor, Saving Hope, the Korean Ghost Doctor, The Resident, and New Amsterdam. And no, I've never watched Grey's Anatomy or General Hospital.

I'm hoping to make it to the gym tomorrow... ooooh, that'd make it 3 times this week!

Self-Care

I finally made it back to the gym after a week away. I didn't actually go anywhere though. It was a week that was "bookended" by runaway dogs. In between, the house got cold and after I shoveled out my storm doors to the rough basement housing vital equipment, I found 6-8" of water submerging the controller to my oil burner. Ugh. The sump pump had failed and/or the drainage pipe was frozen. The plumber arrived a few hours later and managed to pump enough water out so he could inspect the oil burner. Eventually it restarted. But I needed a new sump pump and it was advised that the galvanized drainage pipe should be replaced with PVC. Galvanized pipe just rots from the inside and eventually collapses on itself.

Also, the oil burner was suffering corrosion from the perpetually moist environment: my house is on wetlands even though we are uphill from the main road and lake. Our wetlands sit in a pocket on the hillside, and my property contains the old "community well for the neighborhood" from the 50s. Now everyone has their own private well, but mine is only 30 feet deep because there's an underground spring and we're probably sitting on the aquifer. The next day, different plumbers arrived to install a new sump, remove the old galvanized pipe and replace it with a larger diameter PVC, replace and repair the corroded parts of the oil burner.

Meanwhile, because it had been fairly cold, I had run through the firewood in the house and had to get more from the woodpile outside. Which meant chopping through the icy crust, shoveling up the snow and pulling up the corner of the tarp to expose the stacked wood. I'm glad I still have my old hand truck to drag. The snow and icy crust is so compacted and hard that the cart barely dented the surface. The next day, Friday, I had planned to go to the gym. Plans thwarted when the dogs start barking furiously at 6:30 AM. I'm not a morning person and hadn't planned to get up until 8. I stagger out to the living room expecting to see a cat or something in the yard. The dogs bark at cats a lot.

Outside the front door is a tall skinny cop and the guy from the wildlife rescue. He has a giant hoop net and a stick with a loop on it for catching strays. They ask me if I'm missing a dog. Obviously not because mine are in the window barking their fool heads off. They tell me that a dog that looks like mine was running down the main road. Like mine? Just like the white one. Yeah, he's escaped before but since he's in the window, obviously not him. They said they thought maybe I had 3 dogs now. Nope. But I DO KNOW of someone with a white husky who lives not far from here. Just then, the white husky tears down my driveway, stops briefly to mark my hedges and takes off again. "Saul, is that you?"

The cop and the wildlife guy run after him. The cop comes back and asks if I have dog treats. Of course I do. I give him two strips of chicken jerky because they are my dogs' favorite and I imagine every dog loves them. I see the cop pull off pieces and toss them to the dog who greedily snaps them up. Then I go back to bed. And I oversleep, take the dogs to the park late and have such a wicked headache that I bail on the idea of going to the gym. Later, I text the wildlife rescue to ask if the dog was caught. Yep, it was Saul and he was returned home safely.

I couldn't get warm but I wasn't in the mood to exercise. Bad sleep was giving me vertigo. Instead, I went to the gym and sat in the sauna for 15 minutes and then a long hot shower. It's an indulgent exercise in self-care, a term I've never used before, but somehow seems appropriate now. I'm finally able to brush and floss the side of my mouth that has stitches, but the gums are still so sensitive. No doubt not brushing or flossing that side for a whole week wasn't great oral hygiene. The gums are very tender, so brushing and flossing is now a tentative and tedious nightly ritual... but better than wearing dentures!

Today, I got to the gym late. It's been unusually warm recently but there's still snow and ice everywhere. (The only thing more slippery than ice is wet ice. I really appreciate having the YaxTrax grips on my boots for traversing the dog park every morning.) There's a familiar big guy on elliptical #1 so I get on #3. Later, Wind Breaker arrives just as #1 vacates. Machine #3 isn't bad though. I get my pedaling done but nowhere near 2.8 miles. At least I managed to do pull-ups! My arms were a bit tired from ramming the ice chipper into recalcitrant slippery patches next to my car doors in the driveway this morning. It's warm enough that they'll dissipate and leave muddy patches instead.

Step machine was routine. Another round of pull-ups. I look at the cross-trainers: there's six of them but #2 and #5 are occupied and I don't like the spacing. It's flu season, people come to the gym sick and I'd rather not be pedaling breathlessly right next to anyone else. Especially since I tend to really get into my tunes and sing along (to myself so no one else can really hear me esp since I have a terrible singing voice), which means I'm breathing hard. I could get on one of the many Expresso Bikes but they're situated so the glare from outside smacks the consoles dead on, making them impossible to see. There's two Octanes. I've used these lateral elliptical machines before although I think more recently than 2023. (I do a search of my "notes" and 2023 comes up as the latest. WTF? Seriously, two years?)

Another round of pull-ups and then off to the Aerobics Room. There's a couple of HS kids there, each doing their own routine. I do mine and then, happily, I'm done. It's only in the shower that I realize I've lost an earring. They're tiny little hoops. Ugh. It's always the same ear too, I surmise, because that ear lobe (the right one) is a tad thicker than the left. Which means it's at a greater risk for losing the back. I've lost this earring before, which means this isn't a tragedy -- just super annoying. I have several pairs of this particular style, but when I go home, I swap the remaining one out for a more traditional stud.

Meanwhile, I've kept the bird feeder stocked with sunflower seeds. My friend who lives the next town over atop a big hill, has bluebirds! She says it's the dried meal worms. It's not. Because I've added the same meal worms to my feeder and I don't get bluebirds. I just get very aggressive starlings fighting with the house finches and chickadees. She's got a different ecosystem and has to worry about hawks swooping in to snack on the songbirds. During the summer, she also gets tiny little frogs wedged into the siding facing the towering oaks outside her porch. I have big leopard frogs, bullfrogs, and the unseen ever trilling peepers, but they stay in the ponds and streams behind the house...

Five Days Off But Not a Vacation

I finally made it to the gym today, although a lot later than usual. I had a horribly stressful morning, with driving gingerly after last night's ice storm. The road was okay but the park was only partially plowed and salted. The dog park gate was, as expected, frozen shut and I had to chip the bottom free to get it open. My mistake was to unleash my dogs in the "unleashing area" instead of getting them inside the actual park. The gate didn't close enough behind me and one of the dogs slipped out and ran off down the exit road. Ugh.

I managed to get the other dog inside the dog park, and while he was frantically barking, I tried to call the wayward one back. He ran toward the main road and thankfully the few cars slowed down. You get a sick feeling in your gut when your dog runs off into traffic! Then a black SUV actually drove into the exit road, sort of chasing my dog back into the park area. I know enough not to chase dogs so I crouched down with my arms open and he ran back to me and inside the gate. Whew. The SUV driver briefly got out of his car just to make sure that the loose dog was secured and then turned around and went on his way. Thank you!

The park is all slippery and broken ice. The dogs run around the fenced half acre while I spend more time chipping away at the gates because even though I've managed to pry them open, they won't close. Finally, the wayward dog comes back down to the gate. I guess he's upset that there's no one to play with, the ground is hard and sharp and I haven't trudged up the hill to put out the heated water bowl. I put the dogs back in the car and spend another 15 minutes chipping away and sprinkling cheap kitty litter.

I get to the gym and it's 1 pm. It's also a holiday so the local cinema is open which it usually isn't for a Monday and the parking lot is crowded. But the gym is empty. I'm tired. My arms are tired. And I'm still recovering from dental surgery I had on Thursday. I have stitches on one side of my mouth, upper and lower, so I can't brush or floss that side. It makes my mouth feel and taste gross, especially since I can feel the stitches with my tongue. The surgery took 2 hours and went well, as far as I can tell. But I don't remember much because I've never been anesthetized like this before: an IV with saline in one arm, a blood pressure monitor on the other arm, a fingertip oxygen meter, and cuffs on both wrists for an EKG. The last thing I remember was looking at the console because it was beeping.

Twigsickle
The next thing I know is that I can't focus my eyes and am experiencing double vision, then I'm sitting in my winter coat on the sofa with a blanket and the dogs. I have no recollection of leaving the office or the drive home (hubs was working from home all week so he was my ride), or even walking back into the house! When you have a baby, you get an epidural but you're awake for everything, even during a C-section. When you have a colonoscopy, they put you to sleep but you're awake and fairly clear-headed withing 30 minutes of the procedure being over. Even my kid was a bit dopey after having 4 wisdom teeth removed, but only for an hour or so. The swelling has gone down mostly in my jaw but it's still sore and sensitive. Eating takes a lot of conscious effort not to chew on the recuperating side.

So, I made it to the gym today. After lots of shoveling, and too much excitement. Excitement is stressful. I'm not surprised that my pulse rate is higher than usual. Not surprised that pull-ups really sucked today. I could barely feel my arms except for the fatigue in my shoulders. There's another storm brewing and will probably dump a lot of snow Wednesday night into Thursday. I should probably go to the gym tomorrow...

The dogs apparently have no issue eating canned beaver. I only bought one can as a test cuz they're so picky they won't eat anything with fish in it. And while beavers are aquatic plant-eating mammals, I wasn't sure if that didn't mean they didn't have a "pondy" taste and aroma. I've eaten local bass and I admit I don't like it cuz there's a pondy smell and flavor. But the dogs were okay with it so I might go back and buy a case of that Canine Caviar Beaver. Two bucks a can is a good price for dog food. Not quite as good as $20/case of 12 but close enough.

Apparently Weight Lifting is Good For Your Brain

I took yesterday off and did a bunch of chores, actually fell asleep on the sofa with the dogs and made up my sleep deficit. But of course, ...
